Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Peace, Vol. 2 O God, I wonder whether everything is all right, thought Rostov, stopping for a moment with a sinking heart, and rushing along the vestibule and the familiar warped staircase. The same old door-handle, the spots on which had been the cause of so much anger in the count ess, submitted to the same weak pressure. A tallow candle was burning in the antechamber. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Peace, Vol. 2 of 3 In spite of the indifference which Prince Andrew had chosen to assume before Peter, he watched the course of events from day to day with keen interest, and read a great quantity of books and he noted, with surprise, that his father's visitors fresh from St. Petersburg, from the very headquarters of action, who might therefore be supposed to know what was doing in domestic and foreign politics, were often far less well informed than he was, living secluded in the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Peace, Vol. 6 The battle of Borodino, with the successive occupation of Moscow and the flight of the French army without further battles, is one of the most instructive events of history. All historians agree that the external activity of states and peoples, in their mutual collisions, is expressed by war; that immediately after great or petty military successes the political power of states and nations is increased or diminished. Strange as it seems in reading history to find that such and such a king or emperor, on quarreling with other emperors or kings, gets his troops together, attacks the enemy's army, wins the victory, kills three thousand, five thousand, ten thousand men, and in consequence of this vanquishes a whole state and a whole population of millions of men; hard as it is to understand why the defeat of an army - the loss of a hundredth part of all a nation's forces - should compel the submission of the entire nation, - yet all the facts of history, as far as it is known to us, confirm the justice of the assertion that the greater or less success of the army of any nation at war with another is the cause, or at least the essential indication, of the increase or decrease of the power of those nations. When an army has won a victory, instantly the "rights" of the victorious nation are increased to the detriment of the vanquished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Peace, Vol. 2 of 2: A Historical Novel; The Invasion, 1807 1812 No doubt if Napoleon had not taken offence at the concessions required of him, if England had not intrigued with the dispossessed duke, if the Czar had not been deeply aggrieved, if the government of Russia had not been a despotic monarchy, if the various causes which led up to the French Revolution, the consulate and the empire had never existed - there would have been no war. But, at the same time, if only one of this chain of circumstances had been missing, the sequel would not have followed. Thus it was the sum total of them all-and no one event by itself which entailed the fatal consequences. It happened because it was bound to happen; and so it came to pass that some millions of men, ignoring all common sense and human feeling, started to march eastwards to slaughter their fellow-creatures, just as, some centuries before, unnumbered swarms had rushed down on the west, killing all on their way. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Peace: A Historical Novel When Russia, already half-conquered, saw the inhabitants of Moscow flying to distant provinces, while the levies of militia went on without cessation, we - who did not live then - we fancy that every individual, from the greatest to the least, can have had but one idea: that, namely, of sacrificing everything to save the country or to perish with it. The records of the time indeed are full of traits of devotion and love, of despair and anguish, but the reality was far from what we fancy it. The historic interest of those terrible years diverts our attention from the minor personal interests which, by their more immediate pressure, blinded contemporary witnesses to the importance of all that was going on around them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Peace, Vol. 2 of 2: A Historical Novel; Before Tilsit, 1805 1807 Prince basil never laid any plans beforehand; still less did he ever plot evil with a View to his Own advantage. He was simply a man of the world who had been successful, and to whom success had become a matter of habit. He acted according to circumstances and to his position towards others, and he reconciled this mode of proceeding with the various schemes which were his Chief interest in life but which he never examined with conscientious narrowness. He had always a dozen in hand: some never - got beyond the first stage, some worked out successfully, some again went overboard. The prog ress of humanity, arising from an infinite collection of human wills, is continuous. The apprehension of the laws of this onward march is the aim of history. But in order to discover the laws of continuous motion in the sum of all the volitions of men, human reason assumes arbitrary and separate units. History first studies an arbitrary series of uninterrupted events, and contemplates it separate from the others, albeit there is and can be no beginning of an event, but every event is the direct outgrowth of its predecessor. Secondly, history studies the deeds of a single man, a tsar, a colonel, as representing the sum of men's voli tions, when in reality the sum of men's volitions is never expressed in the activities of any one historical personage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Peace, Vol. 3 The actions of Napoleon and Alexander, on whose words it seemed to depend whether the event was to take place or not, were as little arbitrary as the action of any soldier who went into the campaign by lot or by recruit ment. It could not have been otherwise because, in order that the will of Napoleon and Alexander (of those people on whom the event seemed to have depended) should be fulfilled, there was needed the coincidence Of an endless number Of circumstances, without one of which the event could not have occurred. It was necessary for millions of people, in the hands of whom was the real power, for the soldiers who fired, and who transported the provisions and the guns, to agree to do the will of a few weak individuals, and to be brought to do this by an endless number of complicated, complex causes. Fatalism in history is necessary for the explanation of unreasonable events, that is, of such as we do not compre hend the reason. The more reasonably we attempt to explain these phenomena in history, the more unreason able and unintelligible they become to us. This panoramic study of early 19th-century Russian society, noted for its mastery of realistic detail and variety of psychological analysis, is generally regarded as one of the world's greatest novels. War and Peace is primarily concerned with the histories of five aristocratic families--particularly the Bezukhovs, the Bolkonskys, and the Rostovs--the members of which are portrayed against a vivid background of Russian social life during the war against Napoleon (1805-14). The theme of war, however, is subordinate to the story of family existence, which involves Tolstoy's optimistic belief in the life-asserting pattern of human existence. The novel also sets forth a theory of history, concluding that there is a minimum of free choice; all is ruled by an inexorable historical determinism. Includes unique illustrations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories and Studies of War and Peace, Vol. 2 of 2 It was not to make the acquaintance of the young lady in question that we had penetrated into the bowels of the ugly and squalid Bulgaria - that game, even to the more youthful Villiers, would have been scarcely worth the candle. The fact was that we were with the Russian army which crossed the Danube in the. End of June, 1877. We had been with gallant old Yolchine's stout soldiers of the Volhynia and Minsk regiments when in the sullen darkness of the early morning of the 27th, they had crossed the Danube in the pontoon boats and had fallen upon the Turkish detachment at the Tekir Dere. A few days later the pontoon bridge was com pleted, and there crossed into Bulgaria the column, strong of all arms, at the head of which Gourko was to penetrate into the Balkans and take in reverse the Turkish garrison in the Passes. Gourko pushed on ahead of his infantry with his two cavalry brigades, one of dragoons commanded by Prince Eugene of Leuchten berg, and one of hussars commanded by the late Duke (nicholas) of Leuchtenberg, both near relatives of the Czar. The first three days' march was over a bare, rolling country studded with villages and farms; on the morning of the 4th of July we were at the mouth of the Zavada gorge in the trough of which flows the Jantra, skirted by the road which leads up to the irregular precipice-fringed mass of rock on which Tirnova is built. Turkish troops were reported still in possession of the town, but Gourko drove them away with insignificant loss and we entered the same afternoon. Tirnova is perched on a veritable eyrie, the rock summit having just space for a cramped market-place. And a tortuous narrow street, flanked by tall, quaint-fronted wooden houses with projecting balconies and a continuous arcade over the side-walks. Macgahan had been in Tirnova in the previous summer during his atrocities investiga tions, and had then been the guest of Maritza and her mother, to whose domicile we were all now heartily wel comed. Ascending to the first floor - there was a shop on the street level - we found ourselves in a spacious lofty room, with a divan along all the four sides; the floor was covered with fine old Eastern rugs and in one corner was the shrine or z'eon with a lamp \burning in front of it.
