Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No study of Goethe's early lyric poetry has been published in English in the last fifty years. But the reading of this poetry the author presents is not intended merely to introduce an English readership to a major body of work; rather, the book delineates for the first time in any language an account of the symbolic network or organizing myth that underlies Goethe's individual poems. This marks a decisive break with the previous research on Goethe, which has tended to view his poetry as the expression of occasional experiences. The author shows, on the contrary, that Goethe's lyric work circles around a core set of problems and figures, that it evinces a systematic coherence unperceived until now.

Book excerpt: If one has to find a label to suit this book it could be something like 'time consciousness' or 'reconciling history and myth.' The picture of Sherlock Holmes on the reverse cover points to the task of deciphering dates and other specifics, which involves conscious effort and purposeful research. For the rest we see vegetation, the coloration of which could evoke thoughts of the Fall or Autumn and beyond that the sequence of the four seasons within the annual cycle. Dates in our calendars record history but also reflect the mood of one or other of the four seasons. It is this correlation that is to be investigated in the first section of this book. The other sections draw attention to 'wandering,' the process of the mind to reconcile daytime experience and the intuitive operations of the mind which our cultures associate with the moon and the night. In the terms of modern psychological theories we may speak of the quest of the libido to achieve union with the anima, its female counterpart in the psyche.

The reader of poetry can consider many more contexts, such as those supplied by his or her familiarity with other works by the same author and with literary tradition. The theoretical basis of this study resides in an analysis of Ferdinand de Saussure's distinction between "langue" and "parole" and approaches to textual criticism predicated on this distinction, which is most clearly evident in the theoretical studies of the Russian Formalists. On the firm basis of an understanding of the difference between poetry and nonliterary prose this study unravels the issues which surround the prominence of words derived from the verbs "wandern" and "to wander" in German nd English respectively in such celebrated poems as "Wandrers Nachtlied," "I wandered lonely as a cloud" and William Blake's "London.:

This book is predicated on a reversal of this trend by letting generalizations follow impressions that a close reading of certain literary texts instill in a reader's mind.

Book excerpt: "The two-hundred-and-fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was celebrated in Scotland by a colloquium held under the auspices of the University of Glasgow's Centre for Intercultural Germanistics in April 1999. Its aim was to reflect both Goethe's own commitment to Weltliteratur and the pressing need in our global village at the turn of the millennium for cultural exchange between scholars of different nations. For if, as Goethe said, 'wer fremde Sprachen nicht kennt, weis nichts von seiner eigenen', then it is also true that 'wer fremde Kulturen nicht kennt; weis nichts von seiner eigenen'.Discussing different themes, different texts, and working with different methodological presuppositions, the papers in this collection nevertheless share the conviction that the significance of Goethe for the new millennium can best be shown by setting his works in an intercultural context. The volume also includes John Michael Krois' Inaugural Ernst Cassirer Lecture in Intercultural Relations, held in the University of Glasgow in April 2000, entitled 'Ernst Cassirer and the Renaissance of Cultural Theory'."

This book charts the growth of Romanticism from the initial reactions to the authoritarian classicism of Louis XIV, through the ‘codification’ of the Sublime by Burke in the 1750s, to the fascination with mystery, fear and violence which dominated the writing of the late eighteenth century. The origins of the movement are found in the writings of Rousseau and admiration for the ‘noble savage’, the development of the landscape garden, discoveries in the South Seas, new approaches to ‘primitive’ poetry and enthusiasm for gothic art and literature. These attitudes are contrasted with the more classical views of writers like Samuel Johnson.

Book excerpt: In opposition to an essentialist conceptualization, the social construct of the human body in literature can be analyzed and described by means of effective methodologies that are based on Discourse Theory, Theory of Cultural Transmission and Ecology, System Theory, and Media Theory. In this perspective, the body is perceived as a complex arrangement of substantiation, substitution, and omission depending on demands, expectations, and prohibitions of the dominant discourse network. The term Body-Dialectics stands for the attempt to decipher – and for a moment freeze – the web of such discursive arrangements that constitute the fictitious notion of the body in the framework of a specific historic environment, here in the Age of Goethe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new series brings into modern English a reliable translation of a representative portion of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's vast body of work. This edition, selected from over 140 volumes in German, is the new standard in English, and contains poetry, drama, fiction, memoir, criticism, and scientific writing by the man who is probably the most influential writer in the German language. The executive editors of this collection are Victor Lange of Princeton University, Eric Blackall of Cornell University, and Cyrus Hamlin of Yale University. Princeton University Press is proud to be the distributor of the twelve volumes in hardcover of the originating publisher, Suhrkamp Verlag. In addition, Princeton will issue paperback reprints of these volumes over the next two years, beginning with volumes one through three. Goethe, the founder of the poetry of experience, created a body of poetry that is unsurpassed in lucidity of speech and imagery and in instinct for melody and rhythm. Nonetheless, many of his poems are relatively unknown to English-speaking audiences, partly because of the difficulties they have posed to translators. This volume contains translations, side by side with the German originals, of Goethe's major poems--all prepared by eminent American and English writers, and all attesting to his poetic genius. Goethe's most complex and profound work, Faust was the effort of the great poet's entire lifetime. Written over 60 years, it can be read as a document of Goethe's moral and artistic development. Faust is made available to the English reader in a completely new translation that communicates both its poetic variety and its many levels of tone. The language is present-day English, and Goethe's formal and rhythmic variety is reproduced in all its richness. The reflections on art and literature that Goethe produced throughout his life are the premise and corollary of his work as poet, novelist, and man of science. This volume contains such important essays as "On Gothic Architecture," "On the Laocoon Group," and "Shakespeare: A Tribute." Several works in this collection appear for the first time unabridged and in fresh translations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book does not find its starting point in a theory but in the recognition that the word "Wanderer," and other forms based on the common root of the verbs to "wander" and "wandern," recur with conspicuous frequency in the writings of Goethe and English Romantic poets such as William Wordsworth and Lord Byron. A notable scholar, Professor L. A. Willoughby sought an explanation for this phenomnon in Carl G. Jung's theory of the unconscious but Willoughby's sole ambit of reference was what he termed "Goethe's poetry." This restriction could not allow the scope necessary for the study of the collective aspect of the mind's power and influence. This study poses the attempt to widen the survey of "wandering" to a comparison of texts found in a wide variety of authors including Milton, Shakespeare and William Blake.
