Book excerpt: Art Catalogue Index (A.C.I.) aims to provide a comprehensive list of all the catalogues raisonnés and reviews on artists born between 1780 and the postwar period. This first edition is focused on the so-called 'modern' period. It starts with the birth of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, in 1780 in Montauban, who competed for the Prix de Rome in 1800 with his contemporaries; he therefore both witnessed and took part in this turning point in time which opened the gates of the 'modern' period, and which led up to today and contemporary art. Published with BFAS, Geneva, and Thierry Meaudre, Paris. English text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection explores Kollwitz’s most creative years, examining her sequences of images, with a focus on the tension between making and meaning. German printmaker Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) is known for her unapologetic social and political imagery; her representations of grief, suffering, and struggle; and her equivocal ideas about artistic and political labels. This volume explores her most creative years, roughly the late 1890s to the mid-1920s, highlighting the tension between making and meaning throughout her work. Correlating Kollwitz’s obsessive printmaking experiments with the evolution of her images, it assesses the unusually rich progressions of preparatory drawings, proofs, and rejected images behind Kollwitz’s compositions of struggling workers, rebellious peasants, and grieving mothers. This selected catalogue of the Dr. Richard A. Simms collection at the Getty Research Institute provides a bird’s-eye view of Kollwitz’s sequences of images as well as the interrelationships among prints produced over multiple years. The meanings and sentiments emerging from Kollwitz’s images are not, as is often implied, unmediated expressions of her politics and emotions. Rather, Kollwitz transformed images with deliberate technical and formal experiments, seemingly endless adjustments, wholesale rejections, and strategic regroupings of figures and forms—all of which demonstrate that her obsessive dedication to making art was never a straightforward means to political or emotional ends.

Book Synopsis World War I and the Visual Arts by : Jennifer Farrell
Download or read book World War I and the Visual Arts written by Jennifer Farrell and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published on the occasion of the centenary of World War I, this Bulletin, which accompanies the related exhibition “World War I and the Visual Arts,” on view at The Met until January 7, 2018, explores the myriad and often contradictory ways in which artists responded to the world’s first modern war. Drawn primarily from The Met’s collection of works on paper and supplemented with loans from private collections, both presentations move chronologically from the initial mobilization in early August 1914 to the tumultuous decade that followed the armistice of November 1918. Ranging from expressions of bellicose enthusiasm to sentiments of regret, grief, and anger, the selected works—from prints, photographs, and drawings to propaganda posters, postcards, and commemorative medals—powerfully evoke the conflicting emotions of this complex period. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

Book Synopsis Masters of Modern Design by : George H. Marcus
Download or read book Masters of Modern Design written by George H. Marcus and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelve designers featured in Masters of Modern Design -- originators of ideas vital to the contemporary world -- have had an immeasurable impact on the buildings, houses, furniture, cars, and basic products we use daily. George Marcus offers biographical sketches and critical evaluations of William Morris, Henry van de Velde, Josef Hoffmann, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Marianne Brandt, Raymond Loewy, Charles and Ray Eames, Achille Castiglioni, Ettore Sottsass Jr., Shiro Kuramata, and Philippe Starck. These profiles present a parallel history of design movements from the nineteenth century on: Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, the International Style, the Bauhaus, postmodernism, and more. Marcus discusses the history, development, philosophy, and process of these influential designers. He focuses on the definitive stances each took in regard to modernism -- issues of decoration, simplicity, functionality, and mass-production -- and the inescapable connections of their works and ideas. This thorough survey is an essential contribution to the history of art, art history, architecture, and design. George H. Marcus teaches the history of twentieth-century design at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of Le Corbusier: Inside the Machine for Living, Design in the Fifties: When Everyone Went Moden, Functionalist Design: An Ongoing History, and co-author of Landmarks of Twentieth-Century Design. Pilar Viladas is the design editor of the New York Times Magazine.
