Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rugby league's 'King', as you've never seen him Wally Lewis will forever be known to rugby league fans as 'the King'. He could do what appeared to be impossible on the field and yet, unbeknown to those around him, including his family and closest friends, he managed to perform at the most elite level while hiding a secret. When he finally revealed to a stunned public that he'd been living with epilepsy for years, he did so just prior to undergoing life-saving brain surgery for the neurological disorder. Wally talks of the difficulty he had in facing major surgery and the emotional and physical impact of his deteriorating condition, including a dramatic virtual 'blackout' on air in 2006. Interestingly, Wally dealt with his only daughter's deafness publicly, all the while keeping his own crisis so profoundly private. Following a successful procedure, Wally has gone on to work with epilepsy organisations to raise awareness about the disorder, helping de-stigmatise the condition and inspiring others to live positively with epilepsy. In 2008, he was included in the Australian and Queensland teams of the century during the Centenary Year of the League.

Book excerpt: For more than 40 years, rugby league has embodied all the hopes and dreams, contradictions and tensions of life in the Sunshine State. The game speaks to Queenslanders' sense of being the underdog and the outsider &– a powerful undercurrent that sweeps through politics, business, the arts, and sport. The enduring appeal of State of Origin is that it allows Queensland to balance the scales, at least for 80 minutes. In Heartland, journalist Joe Gorman chronicles a tale of loss and rebirth &– from the decline of the Brisbane Rugby League competition and North Queensland's Foley Shield to the extraordinary rise of the Broncos and the Cowboys in the NRL. Weaving together stories of diehard supporters and game-changing players, from Arthur Beetson to Johnathan Thurston, this is a revealing account of Queensland's coming of age, both on and off the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Statistical History of Rugby League I always wanted to produce these stats as just a way to take my mind off my back injury and help fi ll in my days but I also wanted them to be as accurate as I could make them, so as I found stats I had to cross check them with other books and websites and to try to be as acurate as possible and with various sites and books and micrfi sch fi lms I actually went through every game ever played. there are the players stats in alphabetical order then there is the order of Darren Lockyer on 355 games down to every player that just played 1 game, (1 game is still more than most players ever got a chance to play), then there is the list of games played at 1 club and then the lists of pointscorers from Hazam El Masri all the way down to the guys that kicked 1 fi eld goal for a solitary point, as well as the pointscorers at 1 club, also the tryscorers lists from The Great Ken Irvine on 212 all the way to 1 and at 1 club Ken Irvine on 171 to 1 again, then goalkickers and fi eld goal kickers. then with the club stats I have added in the records for more than 1 try in a game and all the Hat tricks 4’s, 5’s, 6’s 7’s and eight in a game also the most points, tries, goals f/goals in a game season and career at every club including the clubs that are no longer around, like Cumberland who where only in for 1 season. now with these statistics there may be people out there that are either the players or family of the players that the stats are about and corrections may be needed and I am happy for any feedback, but please remember this is as accurate as I could fi nd with the resources I had available, and there is no opinion involved just cold hard stats, some of the sin binned players I had to go back through some 1000 hours of DVD’s and video tapes to find which particular brawl or punch having said that there is 2 of these stats where I have included my opinion the fi rst is for the Golden Boot Award, there was a period between 1991-1998 where the award wasnt given, so I have listed the players that I believe should have won the award, butI took into consideration the RLW player of the Year the Dally M award, the English Player of the Year and various other Awards that were on off er in those years, the other one and I hope this causes much discussion is in the State of Origin Records, in particular the 1987 Series, if you ask a Queenslander the Game in Los Angeles was an Exhibition Match, but the way I see it if it was a joke match why did they send a full strength Team, so with New South Wales winning Games 1 and 4 and Queensland winning Games 2 and 3 the series was Drawn 2 all, I know that with Queensland winning the Last 7 Series it Doesn’t mean much as they have the Series Overall lead Anyway, but as a Passionate Blues Supporter this is a Wrong that Historically should be Righted. Anyway that all being said I hope you enjoy the read and maybe even end some arguments with these stats as much as I have enjoyed bringing them to you and I will continue to do so in the future.

It's a book about the children of immigrants, military personnel, farmers and factory workers. It's the story of Indigenous kids and boys from the bush who were told they were not good enough. And the story of those seemingly always destined for greatness. Best-author Alan Whiticker delves into the lives and careers of every player to pull on a sky-blue jersey and face the might of the Maroons in league's elite competition. Book excerpt: At the George, Geoffrey Moorhouse's testament to a lifelong love of rugby league, was shortlisted for the inaugural William Hill Sports Book of the Year award in 1989. 'The very soul of rugby league, a sport that has been called 'the toughest in the world', lives within the pages of At the George. From first acquaintance some seasons ago, I believed it to be the finest book ever penned on the thirteen-a-side game... Today, the book remains as fresh as ever and as firmly placed on its pedestal... It is a seminal work, a precious treasure of the game. The book is from the heart, written by a man of intellect, who was bowled over by what he saw one May afternoon at Maine Road, Manchester, back in 1946, and who never lost his affection for the game.' Ian Head, from his new Preface to this edition

Book excerpt: Along the way he met the people whose enthusiasm for the game has made it so durable - current and former internationals as well as others involved at all levels - as well as a few miserable old gits for balance. In this intimate account, Hadfield observes the way rugby league fits into the history and sociology of towns like Wigan and Castleford, with which it is synonymous. His record of the journey is in the great tradition of writers from Wordsworth to Laurie Lee, who found in long walks the perfect medium to explore and reflect upon their surroundings. Up and Over is the definitive book about the game and the local passions it engenders, as Hadfield seeks out the poignant and the humorous on a personal journey of discovery. For those who follow rugby league, it will give a unique perspective on the parts of the world they know intimately; for others it will be an introduction to a different world, seen via one of the elements that gives it its identity.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Captains and the Kings: The story of a blacksmith’s son, a small town, and a secret dark enough to seal a man’s fate. Raised in a two-room shack behind his father’s smithy shop, Dan Hendricks was marked as an outcast from earliest childhood. The people of South Kenton assumed the poor, gangly boy would become as shiftless and dissolute as his drunkard father. Despite the withering judgment and abuse, Dan manages to remain honest and open-hearted into adulthood. He founders in his attempt to find the tenderness and support a man needs. He cannot be with the woman he truly loves, and the one he marries takes a perverse pleasure in seeing him suffer. At the limits of his endurance, when Dan finally breaks we are left to wonder whether this is a destiny foretold or a senseless tragedy. Full of the force and passion of Taylor Caldwell’s best-known novels, To Look and Pass is a revealing portrait of the dark side of small-town America from an author who “never falters when it comes to storytelling” (Publishers Weekly).
