Book excerpt: The Curwen Press, set up by the Reverend John Curwen in 1863, was initially concerned with printing sheet music. Curwen's grandson Harold led a design revolution in typography and illustration in the 1920s when the Press commissioned work from artists including Edward Bawden, Claud Lovat Fraser, Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious, contributing to their lasting reputation. Advertising jobs and limited edition books received the same perfectionist attention and Curwen's colleague, Oliver Simon, continued the tradition of talent spotting, giving early opportunities to John Piper and Graham Sutherland. From the 1930s, the Curwen Press encouraged artists to work directly on lithographic stones and plates, helping to generate a revival of interest in the potential of lithography for mass production of original work. In the 1950s, the market for limited edition lithographic prints was developing in France and America, and the Curwen Studio was set up in 1958 to provide a sympathetic professional environment for experiment in printmaking. The artist printer from the beginning was Stanley Jones, who remains involved with the Studio as it celebrates its fiftieth anniverary.

Book excerpt: In recent years Eric Ravilious has become recognized as one of the most important British artists of the 20th century, whose watercolours and wood engravings capture an essential sense of place and the spirit of mid-century England. What is less appreciated is that he did not work in isolation, but within a much wider network of artists, friends and lovers influenced by Paul Nashs teaching at the Royal College of Art Edward Bawden, Barnett Freedman, Enid Marx, Tirzah Garwood, Percy Horton, Peggy Angus and Helen Binyon among them. The Ravilious group bridged the gap between fine art and design, and the gentle, locally rooted but spritely character of their work came to be seen as the epitome of contemporary British values. Seventy-five years after Raviliouss untimely death, Andy Friend tells the story of this group of artists from their student days through to the Second World War. Ravilious & Co. explores how they influenced each other and how a shared experience animated their work, revealing the significance in this pattern of friendship of women artists, whose place within the history of British art has often been neglected. Generously illustrated and drawing on extensive research, and a wealth of newly discovered material, Ravilious & Co. is an enthralling narrative of creative achievement, joy and tragedy.

Book excerpt: Pattern design flourished throughout the 20th century. From Art Nouveau at the end of the 19th century to computer-generated digital images at the turn of the Millennium, each new generation had their own distinctive approach to pattern design. Tracing the creative cross-fertilization between fashion and interiors, this invaluable book provides a chronological account of the development of pattern design. Highlighting the decisive trends that emerged in each decade, the book draws attention to the achievements of progressive manufacturers and ground-breaking designers, charting the emergence of a series of pattern design superpowers in various countries at different moments in time. From Anni Albers at the Bauhaus in the 1920s and Lucienne Day for Heal's in the 1950s, to Maija Isola for Marimekko in the 1960s, this book combines stunning photographs with informative text to inspire new flights of creativity in pattern design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A facsimile edition of the classic High Street, which pairs the timeless illustrations of Eric Ravilious with a fascinating text by architectural historian J. M. Richards. First published in 1938, this charming book introduces the British high street. Shops include the family butcher, the cheesemonger, the baker and confectioner and the oyster bar, as well as specialized establishments such as the plumassier, the clerical outfitter and the submarine engineer. Only 2,000 copies of the original book were printed before the lithographic plates were destroyed in the London Blitz. As a result, it has become one of the most collectible of all artists' books from this period. This beautiful facsimile edition features all 24 of Ravilious's colour illustrations, and includes an essay by Gill Saunders, Senior Curator of Prints at the Victoria and Albert Museum, that sets the book in its historical context.

Book excerpt: Design is an excellent introduction to the work of two major British designers and artists, Edward Bawden (1903-1989) and Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). Featuring some previously unpublished images, this book presents, in over 100 illustrations, every aspect of their creativity, including advertising, designs for wallpapers, posters, book jackets, trade cards and ceramics. Bawden and Ravilious met in the Design School of the Royal College of Art in 1922, members of a generation of students described by Paul Nash, one of their tutors, as belonging to 'an outbreak of talent'. Their shared interests in illustration led to experiments in print making. Bawden's early attempts at lino-cutting developed into a skill that he used until the end of his life. Ravilious quickly developed into one of the most renowned wood engravers of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines how major artists over the last five centuries have approached wallpaper design. From Durer, who conceived his designs as seriously as he did a fine woodcut, to William Morris, who believed that wallpaper, like all good design, should transform our lives, to Andy Warhol, whose fascination with multiple images inspired brilliant parodies of the wallpaper tradition, the artists represented here reveal the rich complexity inherent in the art of pattern and form that constitutes wallpaper design.
