Often he was desired to use a lantern in his nightly journeyings, but he laughed at the idea of danger, and went his way. One night, walking in some slippery path, he fell; an injury resulted, followed by long months of weariness and pain, and finally ending in his death. It was a sad fall, and all for want of a lamp. Bitterly did he regret his self-confidence when it was too late to remedy the mischief which it had occasioned. There are multitudes to-day who are wandering in darkness and walking in unknown ways. They are full of strength, and hope, and courage; they do not think that they are in danger; though caution is commendable in others. This world is full of darkness; clouds and shadows curtain it on every hand; the glooms of the present, the uncertainties of the future, and the shadowy mysteries of the great Beyond, teach us with emphasis that we have need of light, and light which men can never give us. We may draw wisdom from the experience of the past, but what we need is a knowledge of the future. This knowledge is not attainable through any human intelligence; it must come from Him who dwelleth in light, who is himself the light and life of men, and who sends out his light and his truth to lead and guide the sons of Adam. Of old it was written, “The commandment is a lamp, and the law is a light.” The work of the servants of God has been to turn the Gentiles “from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God.” It is “the light of the glorious gospel of Christ” which illuminates the darkness of this world; and those who embrace that gospel become the “children of the light,” and are “not of the night nor of darkness.” Christ was “the true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world;” and “this is the condemnation, that light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” Being thus illuminated, and made “light in the Lord,” we are to “walk as children of the light;” and walking in the light as Christ is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin. Whatever course we may take in this life, whatever occupation we may follow, whatever profession we may choose, this divine light is needful to us all. We need God’s word, as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, to show us how to walk. We need it in the daily affairs of life; we need it in the field, in the workshop, and in the marts of business. We need the heavenly light to guide us in childhood, in youth, in manhood, in old age. We need it whether in poverty or in riches, in prosperity or adversity. We need it to show us what we ought to do to-day, and to guide us in our hopes and expectations of the morrow. Of old it was written, “the entrance of thy word giveth light.” If we follow its guidance we shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Infidelity may threaten to break our lantern and to extinguish our light, but this is not what we want. It is not enough to extinguish the light we have; we need something better. Let the skeptic then tell us what is our duty here; let him unfold to us our destiny hereafter. Let him unravel the mysteries of human existence. Let him give us present peace and an assurance of future blessing, and we will give attention to his words. But we wish no one to extinguish the light we have, and leave us in the darkness of a midnight without sun or star, to be bewildered by the phantom lights of a false philosophy, and beguiled into the quagmires of doubt and unbelief. While I was paralyzed from a spinal infection, I realized that some of what I had been taught in church were based on tradition and were not biblically based. During this period of time, God began the healing process. Through faith in the Word of God, I was healed physically, but, more importantly, God gave me the assignment to pass on to others what I have learned. I pray for all those who read this book: may your eyes and hearts be open to receive the message of Gods great love for you and His desire to lead you to your Promise Land.

This question led us to explore the very foundations of the church and we decided to follow Jesus wherever that will take us. We stepped out of the world of the church, for we began to see that most of what we had invested our lives in had more in common with the world than with the Word of God. Like Paul when he met the risen Lord on the way to Damascus and counted all he had as a religious Pharisee as garbage, we too walked away from religion to pursue Jesus. When we chose not to be purpose-driven, we were set free to be Spirit-led! We stepped off the religious treadmill of the same old, same old year-round unproductive programs and away from the futility of trying to meet people's expectations. We found the one who offered us living water to quench the thirst. It tasted so different than the "holy water" poured from the religious buckets of some big-name leader's anointing which we (and so many others) sought to quench the thirst. We came to the waters, tired and burdened by religion and its load, and he gave us a drink. A river of living water was released from our innermost beings, the burdens lifted and healing flowed through our bodies and souls. His yoke was placed upon our shoulders and was so much lighter than the religious burdens of the world of the church. We learned he was indeed gentle and humble in heart and we found rest for our souls. Our eyes were opened to the simplicity of the church as the body of Jesus and the Spirit helped us to see others and ourselves through his eyes. We were set free to walk in the world and minister to needs and help others find freedom. "The Journey" is our story walking out of the world of the church to learn to walk in the Way, like the believers in the Book of Acts-a return to the ancient paths of faith in Christ. It an invitation to put down the heavy loads and expectations of the world of the church and enjoy the presence of Jesus. It is an invitation to quit the rat race with purpose-driven leaders and follow the lead of the Spirit. It is an invitation to radically invest your life in the Kingdom of God by learning to walk in "The Way."

God loves the whole world, and He loves you. Everything He calls us to do according to His purpose is to show His love to the world and bring glory to Himself. As you work through the disciplines of fellowship, obedience, humility, meditation, prayer, and worship, you will learn how to draw close to the Father, follow the example of Jesus, and shine His light bright for all to see.
