Book excerpt: This collection of vintage postcards depicts Indian River County, Florida, from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s, a time of dramatic change. Even after the West was settled, South Florida remained a frontier. The Indian River Lagoon, the most biodiverse estuary in North America, was then the only avenue for travel for canoes of the indigenous Native Americans, sailing vessels, and steamboats that opened the land to settlers. Today the lagoon is part of the Intracoastal Waterway, and the current civic leaders have ensured the preservation of the county's history by limiting high-rise buildings, protecting trees, and purchasing environmentally sensitive and historically significant properties.

Book excerpt: Charlemagne’s Christianisation of the pagans in the Dark Ages of Medieval Europe was brutal enough. It could have been far worse without Waldo, a more considered Christian, by his side. Who was Waldo? I hear you ask. An original document, written in Latin on sheepskin in the early middle ages verifies the donation of a Christian church by a certain Waldo in Seeburg, a small village in Southern Germany. No further historic records of this mysterious Waldo existed. I spent two years of intense research to unravel his alleged identity. I concluded, that Waldo and Charlemagne, the mighty Carolus Magnus were like the priest and the soldier, who shared a lifelong bond forged in childhood. They saw themselves as Christianity's cross and sword, put on earth by God to build and defend Christendom in medieval Europe. Both men differed in their approach to converting the pagans. Charlemagne, the soldier, believed in a swift decision and the beheading by sword of the unwilling: My god is your god. My will be done. Waldo, the priest, believed in a more gentle missionary way, bringing salvation with bread, wine and fear of the unknown, and the promise of a better life in heaven: Jesus died for us on the cross for our redemption. Thy kingdom come. Amen! They also shared a terrible secret known only to themselves and God. It is a secret that history failed to uncover in the last 1250 years. Those who read this book with an open mind, will hopefully care more about the authenticity of their spiritual experience than the historical authenticity of every chronicled aspect in this novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1871, Ralph Waldo Emerson boarded a train in Concord, Massachusetts, bound for a month-and-a-half-long tour of California—an interlude that became one of the highlights of his life. On their journey across the American West, he and his companions would take in breathtaking vistas in the Rockies and along the Pacific Coast, speak with a young John Muir in the Yosemite Valley, stop off in Salt Lake City for a meeting with Brigham Young, and encounter a diversity of communities and cultures that would challenge their Yankee prejudices. Based on original research employing newly discovered documents, The California Days of Ralph Waldo Emerson maps the public story of this group’s travels onto the private story of Emerson’s final years, as aphasia set in and increasingly robbed him of his words. Engaging and compelling, this travelogue makes it clear that Emerson was still capable of wonder, surprise, and friendship, debunking the presumed darkness of his last decade.

Book excerpt: Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, pastor, lecturer, and public figure. During his life, he was one of the most prominent thinkers and writers in the United States with his work remaining influential today. In the late 19th century, after the death of Benjamin Franklin, it was Emerson who filled the role of thinker, motivator, and spiritual guide for the American nation. While he was the mentor and friend of Henry David Thoreau, he was viewed by most liberals of his generation as their spiritual leader. The admiration was well deserved: he was the first thinker to formulate the philosophy of transcendentalism. Emerson’s writings influenced the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, Maurice Maeterlinck, Charles Baudelaire, and Leo Tolstoy. Book excerpt: Ralph Waldo Emerson's decision to quit the ministry, arrived at painfully during the summer and fall of 1832, was accompanied by illness so severe that he was forced to give up any immediate thought of a new career. Instead, in December, he embarked on a tour of Europe that was to take him to Italy, France, Scotland, and England. Within a year after his return in the fall in 1833, his health largely restored, he went to live in the town of Concord, his home from then on. The record of Emerson's ten months in Europe which makes up a large part of this book is unusually detailed and personal, actually a diary recording what Emerson saw and did as well as what he thought. He describes cities, scenes, and buildings that he found striking in one way or another and he gives impressions of the people he met. During his travels he made the acquaintance of Landor, of Lafayette, and of Carlyle, Wordsworth, and Coleridge, all of whom stimulated him. In Paris he was so much stirred by a visit to the Jardin des Plantes that he determined "to become a naturalist." On his return to America, still without a profession, he reverted in his journals to the more impersonal form they had taken in his days as a minister, focusing on his inner experiences rather than on external events. Notes start dotting the pages once again, this time not so much for future sermons--although for years he did a certain amount of occasional preaching as for the addresses of the public lecturer he would soon become. Through the thirty-four months covered by this volume, the journals continue to he the advancing record of Emerson's mind, demonstrating a growing maturity and firmness of style by compression and aphorism.

Book excerpt: Ralph Waldo Emerson will undoubtedly be forever remembered as a quintessentially American author; his prose works rank among the most excellent from any century of American literature. Unfortunately, due ironically to the excellence and originality of his transcendental philosophy, his poetry is often forgotten. This volume of his collected poems seeks to rectify that. This is Volume 1 of the Great American Poets Series.
