Book Synopsis Interdisciplinary Instruction by : Karlyn E. Wood
Download or read book Interdisciplinary Instruction written by Karlyn E. Wood and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2015-03-23 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth edition of this practical guide to interdisciplinary instruction focuses on the thinking and reasoning skills mandated by the Common Core State Standards and the content-learning standards required by an increasing number of states. The author provides an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to designing, creating, and implementing unit and lesson plans for all learners. Both pre-service and in-service elementary and middle-school teachers will find Wood’s approach to be comprehensive, with a strong theoretical foundation. Using Wiggins and McTighe’s backward design process, Wood offers specific protocols for creating unit and lesson plans at the elementary and middle-school levels. By emphasizing differential instruction, constructivist educational philosophy, application of skills in meaningful context, and the art of engaging student interest, he demonstrates how diverse student populations can benefit from the interdisciplinary approach. Prospective teachers will learn to create interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary plans that promote problem solving, creativity, and social interaction. Examples abound, with an appendix of sample unit plan designs filled with ideas for lessons and activities.

Book Synopsis Ecological Restoration and the U.S. Nature and Environmental Writing Tradition by : Laura Smith
Download or read book Ecological Restoration and the U.S. Nature and Environmental Writing Tradition written by Laura Smith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a critical history of the intersections between American environmental literature and ecological restoration policy and practice. Through a storying—restorying—restoring framework, this book explores how entanglements between writers and places have produced literary interventions in restoration politics. The book considers the ways literary landscapes are politicized by writers themselves, and by conservationists, activists, policymakers, and others, in defense of U.S. public lands and the idea of wilderness. The book profiles five environmental writers and examines how their writings on nature, wildness, wilderness, conservation, preservation, and restoration have variously inspired and been translated into ecological restoration programs and campaigns by environmental organizations. The featured authors are Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) at Walden Pond, John Muir (1838–1914) in Yosemite National Park, Aldo Leopold (1887–1948) at his family’s Wisconsin sand farm, Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890–1998) in the Everglades, and Edward Abbey (1927–1989) in Glen Canyon. This book combines environmental history, literature, biography, philosophy, and politics in a commentary on considering (and developing) environmental literature’s place in conversations on restoration ecology, ecological restoration, and rewilding.

Book excerpt: It has become increasingly evident while working with in-service and pre-service teachers that educators are seeking meaningful solutions to teaching and learning. Engaging Students: Using the Unit in Comprehensive Lesson Planning provides the solution. Beirne and Velsor have constructed a new method to design, implement, and manage teaching and learning that blends the tenets of Constructivism, Bloom's Taxonomy, and Multiple Intelligence Theory--including their updates and revisions. The Unit introduces a systematic method of teaching and learning that assists educators at all levels in the implementation of this comprehensive approach to learning in a natural way. Providing direct instruction to educators in regard to the thorough planning of a unit and lessons with a special focus on objectives and assessments, Engaging Students is comprehensive and incorporates historical perspectives with cutting edge ideals.

Book Synopsis Reconstituting Rurality by : Jonathan Murdoch
Download or read book Reconstituting Rurality written by Jonathan Murdoch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second in the "Restructuring Rural Areas" series, this work presents an examination of the way in which the rural, and the concept of rurality is being reconstructed within urban regions.; It argues that the rural is not a fixed category but the outcome of political, economic and socio- cultural pressures. These pressures are exacerbated in southeast England - an area dominated by London and the patterns of growth associated with that city. Through close analysis of key land development processes and a series of village studies, the authors give a forceful demonstration of the way in which certain social groups are becoming increasingly influential in determining the material and social shape of rural areas in the United Kingdom. The formation of class identity, it is argued, is closely bound up with the formation of certain local spaces; class and space must be considered as combined elements in the development of rural locales. To illustrate this the authors document in detail the means by which dominant groups represent themselves within the development process and show how the exclusion of certain kinds of development leads to the exclusion of certain social groups.
