Book excerpt: "A cogent, engaging history of humanity's most ambitious quest--seeking outward for other minds."--David Brin, author of Existence "A fascinating perspective on humankind's obsession for knowing if there is anyone else out there."--Gerrit L. Verschuur, author of The Invisible Universe: The Story of Radio Astronomy "Squeri has written what will likely be the definitive history of the early days of SETI that includes profiles of some of its leading characters."--Ben Zuckerman, coeditor of Extraterrestrials: Where Are They? "An insightful history that explores the scientific foundations of the modern-day search for our place in the cosmos. Waiting for Contact delivers unparalleled access to the inner history of SETI and invites us to ride along on the journey to answer one of science's ultimate questions: Are we alone?"--Douglas Vakoch, president, METI International "Waiting for Contact is a balanced account, telling the tale of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence without the overpromise usually trumpeted by enthusiastic proponents and the hyperventilation so commonly added by UFO enthusiasts. If you are simply interested in the history, unvarnished by an agenda, you'll enjoy this book."--Don Lincoln, author of Alien Universe: Extraterrestrial Life in Our Minds and in the Cosmos Imagine a network of extraterrestrials in radio contact with each other across the universe, superior beings who hail from advanced civilizations quadrillions of miles away, just waiting for Earth to tune in. Some people believe it’s only a matter of time before we discover the right "station." Waiting for Contact tells the story of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) movement, which emerged in 1959 as astronomers began using radio telescopes to listen for messages from space. New technological developments turned what once was speculation into science. Boosted by support from Frank Drake, Philip Morrison, Carl Sagan, and the genre of science fiction, the SETI movement gained followers and continues to capture imaginations today. In this one-of-a-kind history, Lawrence Squeri looks at the people, reasons, goals, and mindsets behind SETI. He shows how it started as an expression of the times, a way out of Cold War angst with hope for a better world. SETI's early advocates thought that with guidance from technically and ethically advanced outsiders, humanity might learn how to avoid horrors like nuclear annihilation and societal collapse from overpopulation. Some hoped that good news from outer space might reveal a cure for cancer or even the secret of immortality. Squeri also describes the challenges SETI has faced over the years: the struggle to be taken seriously by the scientific community and by NASA, competition for access to radio telescopes, perpetual lack of funding, and opposition from influential politicians. He covers the rise and fall of Soviet SETI and the few rare meetings between Soviet and American astronomers. Despite many setbacks, the movement pressed forward with the aid of private donations and developed outreach programs. Volunteers can now help search for new civilizations on their personal computers by joining the SETI@Home project. Today, SETI researchers continue to see themselves as explorers. They often identify with Columbus, and just as Columbus never realized the full implications of his discovery, we cannot predict what will happen if contact is made. This book points out that if, against all expectations, the embattled SETI movement finally succeeds, the long-awaited first signal picked up by its radio antennas will usher the greatest shift in human history. A new adventure will begin. Lawrence Squeri is professor emeritus of history at East Stroudsburg University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solution-based casework is an approach to assessment, case planning, and case management that combines what we know from clinical social work with what we value about sound social work practice. It is grounded in family-centered social work and draws from clinical approaches within social work and mental health. By integrating problem- and solution-focused approaches that form the clinical and social work traditions, treatment partnerships are more easily formed between family, caseworker, and service provider. Solution-Based Casework is a skill-based, practice-oriented text that provides the specific guidance that students and new practitioners need in order to make sense quickly of the complex tasks of assessment and case planning in child welfare. The book flows out of a long practice experience, and was developed in consultation with workers and supervisors who were attempting to remedy problems viewed as contributing to recurrent abuse and neglect. It seeks to end adversarial relationships in casework and advocates case plans based on specific outcome skills rather than on those written with vague outcome goals measuring attendance in counseling. It serves as a common conceptual framework for integrating disparate segments of a response network, thereby allowing all providers in a therapeutic system to work toward common goals. The text is divided into three sections. In Section I the conceptual history and theoretical foundations of solution-based casework are presented so that the reader can place this approach to casework within the ongoing professional conversation about what constitutes sound practice. Section II addresses issues of assessment and case planning. Section III focuses on case management issues and how treatment team members experience a solution-based casework approach.

Book excerpt: The thrilling third novel starring London psychotherapist-turned-detective Frieda Klein—from internationally bestselling author Nicci French Nicci French’s Blue Monday and Tuesday’s Gone introduced the brilliant yet reclusive psychotherapist Frieda Klein to widespread critical acclaim, but Waiting for Wednesday promises to be her most haunting case yet. Ruth Lennox, housewife and mother of three, is found dead in a pool of her own blood. Detective Chief Inspector Karlsson can’t piece together a motive and calls in Frieda, hoping her talents will offer a new angle on the case. When it emerges that the mother was hiding a scandalous secret, her family closes ranks. Frieda herself is distracted, still reeling from an attempt on her life, and struggling with her own rare feelings of vulnerability. Then a patient’s chance remark sends Frieda down a dangerous path that seems to lead to a serial killer who’s long escaped detection. Is Frieda getting closer to unraveling either case? Or is she just the victim of her own paranoid, fragile mind? Because, as Frieda knows, every step closer to a killer is one more step into a darkness from which there may be no return . . . Flawlessly executed, Waiting for Wednesday is a penetrating, twisted novel of murder and neurosis with a jaw-dropping climax that will linger in readers’ minds long after they have turned the last page.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " I cannot imagine happiness without this man by my side, if he is not nearby, I lose calmness, I need to see him as I'm feeling so bad…" You wake up anxious, you are anxious at the office too, you talk to the people but anxiety remains, later in the evening you are anxious at home too…everything turned into chaos! Your heart beats stronger at the only thought about him. Your thoughts quickly develop and you already imagine your next date. You suddenly postpone any other engagements just to see him and to make your agenda free. Suddenly, you are not interested in meeting other men. Now you are focused only on him. You wonder what to do in order to develop faster your relationship. You try to make him discuss subjects like "what he would do in the situation x", taking into consideration that you want to make your relationship special as soon as you can. While you think about all this, he wonders if it is worth contacting you again. Ironically, even if you think about serious relationship, his reaction is running away. " I'm not feeling ready yet", "you're amazing girl but I don't want a serious relationship","I was very busy at work and was unable to contact you". Let's say it directly: all these are lies! But the strangest fact is that we women do accept it. Instead of feeling later abandoned or humiliated, it would be better to start from the beginning again. It is high time to put an end to this vicious circle! If he does not treat you well, do not try to hide this thing and realize this in order to have the possibility to change the things. It is true that the process of conquest can never be easy, but some advice can be useful for conquering your man without exaggerating with sacrifices, i.e. in wise way and applying the most efficient techniques so that you keep "the target" into your hands. I shall present a technique based on "step by step" system that will help you to achieve concrete results! • How to Make Him Believe that the Idea of Serious Relationship Development Belongs to Him • Your Purpose is to Make him Commit at the Maximum! What Can you Begin With? • What To Do If You Failed To Make Him Commit • What is the Road Leading to the Man's Heart? • What Men Want From Women • Is Your Man Afraid of Commitment? • Why Do The Men Fear Commitment? • How To Make Use Of Dilemma If The Man Is Unwilling To Commit • What You Can Do If He Lost Interest In You • How To Make Your Man Emotionally Addicted To You • How To Understand If He Is Being Serious Or Just Playing? • How To Be The Woman Every Man Wants • What To Do To Make Him Fancy Only You • How to Make a Man Jealous • How to Transform Unrequited Love into a True Love Story? • What To Do When the Guy You Like Stops Texting and Calling You • He Lost Interest In You, Now What? • How To Wake Up His Interest • How To Avoid Being Dependent Of Him • How To Increase Your Charms In Order To Conquer A Seducer • How To Make Him Want to Be With You • Ways To Get Him To The Altar • The Secret Of Happy Couple Relationship • How To Offer New Forces To Your Couple In Order To Increase Love • How To Keep Alive Couple Relationship • Essential Features Of Healthy Love Relationship • How To Make Love Relationship Long Lasting • How You Can Build Up Long Lasting Relationship

Book excerpt: Operations research encompasses a wide range of problem-solving techniques and methods applied in the pursuit of improved decision-making and efficiency. Some of the tools used by operations researchers are statistics, optimization, probability theory, queuing theory, game theory, graph theory, decision analysis, mathematical modeling and simulation. An Information System is any combination of information technology and people's activities using that technology to support operations, management, and decision-making. In a very broad sense, the term information system is frequently used to refer to the interaction between people, algorithmic processes, data and technology. Operations Research is the scientific study of logistic networks to provide for decision support at all levels in order to optimize production and distribution of the commodity flows. Nowadays, these logistic networks have become very large and may range over several countries, while the demands for quality of service have grown similarly to ever higher standards. Generally one agrees that to maintain such large networks successfully, one needs the control of all the information flows through the network, that is, continuous information on the status of the resources. Operations research is an interdisciplinary branch of applied mathematics and formal science that uses advanced analytical methods such as mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and mathematical optimization to arrive at optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems. It is often concerned with determining the maximum or minimum of some real-world objective. The book of operations management features the latest concepts and applications while not losing focus on the core concepts that has made this text a market leader.
