The manuscript consists of five pages of text which is in the ownership of the last surviving member of the walking team. The book is mainly photographic, but enhanced by Wainwright's own illustrations from his pictorial guides and captions drawn from his text.

Book excerpt: Wainwright's Way is a journey on foot through Wainwright’s life from Lancashire to the Lakes. This walking guide charts a 126-mile long-distance route linking the place where Wainwright was born - a Victorian terraced house in Audley Range, Blackburn - with his final resting place on Haystacks, his heavenly corner of Lakeland. Along the way, the walk, split into ten day stages, literally follows in the footsteps of Wainwright at work, linking the sights he sketched and wrote about in a succession of Lancashire guides: A Ribble Sketchbook, A Bowland Sketchbook and A Lune Sketchbook. Continuing northwards, the walk arrives in the county Wainwright knew best, as celebrated in his books, Westmorland Heritage and Three Westmorland Rivers. Spending time in Kendal, where Wainwright lived for 50 years, the route stops to enjoy a unique circular town walk linking all the places associated with AW – from the Museum and Library, to the Town Hall where he worked, to his two residences at Castle Grove and Kendal Green. From here, the walker enters Wainwright’s ‘earthly paradise’ and takes a meandering course across Lakeland from Kendal to Buttermere, through the territory made so familiar by AW’s intimate Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells. The route visits some of the lesser known valleys, passes and peaks recorded in The Far Eastern, Eastern, Central and Western Fells guides, and stops in Borrowdale, one of Wainwright’s favourite valleys, taking in a section of his Coast to Coast Walk along the way. The climax of the walk follows the final journey of Wainwright himself, as his ashes were carried onto Haystacks from Honister Pass to be scattered by the side of Innominate Tarn. From here, the walker drops down to the shores of Buttermere and visits the final memorial to Wainwright - the window on to the fells in the tiny roadside church of St. James. It is a fitting end to both a memorable walk completed – and a memorable life fulfilled. Much more than a route guide, this book uncovers the history, landscape and characters of many of the places sketched by Wainwright. It is a walk through some of the most spectacular scenery in the North of England – including a surprising Lancashire, a county of dramatic river valleys, high moors and lonely woodland cloughs. This trek unites the two contrasting lives of the master fell walker – his industrial Lancashire life and his Lakeland life. It takes in paths on the edge of mill town Blackburn that Wainwright is known to have walked along himself during his youthful sojourns into the Lancashire countryside.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the legendary A. Wainwright's guide to his selection of 56 'foothills' in Lakeland, brilliantly revised and updated by Chris Jesty. The outings described here with typical eloquence and humour were chosen by Wainwright with a particular readership in mind: 'those walkers who, because of age or infirmity, must be content with milder expeditions on lesser fells.' This guide is packed with gems of outstanding beauty which you don't have to be super-fit to enjoy: Orrest Head, where Wainwright's love affair with the Lake District began; Scout Scar, 'a pleasure every step of the way'; Beacon Fell, 'the epitome of that appeals to fellwalkers'; and many, many others. All the walks fall within the boundaries of the National Park. In the second edition, the main routes are picked out in red for greater visibility, and parking information is given where possible.

Book excerpt: Alfred Wainwright, the legendary fell walker and author of the incomparable and unique Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells was also a fluent, eloquent and diligent correspondent. Writing to old friends and to the many new ones gained through his books, and to his love, and later second wife, Betty, his letters display a much warmer, more sensitive and emotional character than his gruff popular image would suggest. Hunter Davies, Wainwright's biographer, has here collected a selection of letters that range from his early years in Blackburn to his established position as Borough Treasurer in Kendal, and cover all aspects of his professional and personal life, as well as the voluminous correspondence that was a consequence of writing and publishing the Pictorial Guides. The latter vividly illuminate many aspects of that turbulent but ultimately triumphant process, while the former present a picture of a dedicated public servant whose personal life had been deeply unhappy until late in life he found unexpected but transcendent love and happiness. In turn business-like and comic, wonderfully well informed and remarkably innocent, deeply moving and yet tough-minded, the letters present a vivid and unforgettable picture of one of the great but eccentric creative geniuses of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: ‘Liner Notes is, unsurprisingly, as good as its author’s songs, with moments of sharp humor alternating with real-life pain, and vivid reflections on love, death, and the whole damn thing. Loudon Wainwright is a true original: not like anyone else, just as he set out to be.’ Salman Rushdie In the late 1960s, Loudon Wainwright III established himself as a loner, deliberately standing outside the conventional. He recorded his first album in 1969, full of raw, angry poetry, but it was the 1972 novelty song ‘Dead Skunk’ that brought him popular recognition. Wainwright’s songs are as hilarious as they can be painful. In Liner Notes, he details the family history and fractured relationships that have informed him: the alcoholism, infidelities and competitiveness; the successes, joys and love. Wainwright writes poignantly about being a son, a parent, a brother and a grandfather while re-printing selections from his father’s columns and meditating upon family, inspiration and art. As plain-speaking on the page as in his songs, Wainwright lays everything bare in this heartfelt memoir of music and family. His lyrics adorn and inform the text, amplifying his prose and connecting his songs to the life he led. ‘He is unafraid and clear-eyed about the events of his life – and utterly engaging.’ Rosanne Cash ’Fans of the self-lacerating, painfully funny Wainwright III will find the memoir they want here’ Kirkus Reviews

First published in 1975 to mark the incorporation of the county into Cumbria, it has been in demand ever since as both a record of a lost county, as an informed and engaging record of one of the loveliest and least spoiled parts of Britain, where nature, culture and history have combined to leave a memorable and exhilarating legacy. Every single parish is included, with its notable buildings or landscapes mapped and illustrated, and its historical or other features of interest discussed and described. Though written "by an amateur, for amateurs" the author's deep knowledge of and close familiarity with the countryside pervade and illuminate the text and the two thousand line drawings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The much-loved fellwalker Alfred Wainwright created one of the truly great walking challenges – to walk across the whole of England. The Coast to Coast route was AW’s last great venture and has become his greatest legacy to long distance walkers – a beautifully simple proposition, linking three national parks that lie between the Irish and the North Sea - The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales and The North Yorks Moors National Parks. Accompanying the BBC television series, this book follows Julia Bradbury as she re-traces Wainwright’s grand traverse. The book collects together all six stages of the walk from the TV series, with Julia’s commentary on her experience of the walk accompanied by stills, evocative landscape photography, and AW’s celebrated line drawings. Julia crosses this changing landscape in sun, wind and rain, learns something of its history and meets the people that make up almost 200 miles of northern England’s most glorious countryside.
