Book Synopsis The Spirituality of Wine by : Gisela H. Kreglinger
Download or read book The Spirituality of Wine written by Gisela H. Kreglinger and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wine serves an important role both in Scripture and in the Christian church, but its significance has received relatively little theological attention in modern times. This book fills that gap. Viewing wine as a gift of God's created bounty and as a special symbol used pervasively throughout Scripture, Kreglinger canvasses the history of wine in the church, particularly its use in the Lord's Supper, discusses the fascinating process of winemaking, and considers both the health benefits of wine and the dangers of alcohol abuse. Offering a vision of the Christian life that sees God in all things - including the work of a vintner and the enjoyment of a well crafted glass of wine.

Book Synopsis Vows in the Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East by : Tony W. Cartledge
Download or read book Vows in the Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East written by Tony W. Cartledge and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1992-11-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vows, oaths, and curses are all quite separate enterprises in the Bible, and especially in the Old Testament. Unfortunately, the writings of many modern scholars fail to indicate these distinctions. This well-argued book elucidates the distinctive nature of vow-making in the Old Testament milieu, setting it in proper relief against the background of other declaratory statements. The first chapter provides a general introduction to the subject and clarifies the often confused practices of oath-taking and vow making as commonly found in the Hebrew Bible. The remainder of the study refines and defends these distinctions, exploring similar means of assertion in the ancient Near East, and suggesting such theological and literary implications as may result.

Download or read book Oaths and Vows written by Adam B Seligman and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oaths, vows, promises, curses - all share family resemblances. They are performatives, carrying illocutionary force. Oaths have rightly been termed, "conditional self-curses", promises have been argued to be but a more developed form of vows, and oaths and vows are often used interchangeably. This book focuses on private vows and oaths including those publically proclaimed. Through analysis of legal, liturgical, mythical and literary works, it seeks to uncover a phenomenology of oaths and vows. Viewing oaths and vows as the human creative force par excellence, it surveys their role in circumscribing and directing both erotic desire and aggression; and so - in their performative function - as standing at the foundation of society and sociability. As acts of trust which establish new obligations understandings of the role of oaths and vows are compared in the Jewish and Christian contexts, in terms of the importance of intentionality in vow making and oath taking, as well as the nature of the obligations ensuing from such locutionary acts. Analysis of the comic and tragic consequences of the violation of marriage oaths as presented in European literature from the 12th to 19th centuries reveals their perception as "habituating" Eros.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lisa Sutton enjoys her simple but satisfying life in the southeastern Arkansas town that she settled in after graduating from college years ago. There, she met a man who enriches her life and makes her believe in fairy tales, gave birth to her sometimes too intelligent daughter, and curated a tribe of loving and dependable people. If there is a more perfect existence on the planet, she hasn’t found it. She isn’t just happy, she’s content. All of that changes when she takes a weekend trip with her girlfriends. For Jeremiah Hawkins, nothing could make his life more perfect than it already is. Well…almost nothing. The only thing missing from his life is an “I do” from his longtime girlfriend and the mother of his daughter. That, and another baby. This time, a son. He bides his time on one, and makes plans for the other, but things don’t always go according to plan. In the span of one evening, everything he knows is swept from underneath him and now he has to scramble to find his footing in a world that doesn’t make much sense. How can something so innocent cause a chain reaction of events?
