The book pursues the objective to transfer the fundamental vortex formation phenomena with application to the cardiovascular system to the reader. There are millions of people deaths because of this disease every year. So, it is important to study the blood pumping mechanism in human body and what is the reason causing this device damage or fail to operate normally in detail. The objective of this study is to develop a heart model for investigating the patterns of fluid flow, and blood velocity diastolic. This heart model is able to observe the fluid flow pattern in left and right ventricle in a pressurized pulsate flow. A detail on fabrication, limitation, future improvement, and problem faced of heart model are discussed in this study. The whole system will be conduct in a close system which operated by using the combination of motor, and syringe. The results showed a relationship between heart beat, velocity, and blood vessel diameter especially for inferior, and superior vena cava can be establish. The result also proved that the relationship between heart beat and the velocity, and the difference of pressure between atrium and ventricle are directly proportional. Additionally, the relationship between vortex formation and septum in the heart chamber can be established at the end of this study. In conclusion, this study had succeeded to produce an equation relates to the velocity, diameter and heart beat in inferior, and superior vena cava. This result can contribute to future heart study as well as application in medical field.

Book excerpt: The three-dimensional vortex formation of a low-aspect-ratio (AR = 1.7), trapezoidal flat plate performing low Reynolds number (order 10^3) pure rotation from rest at a 90° angle of attack and is experimentally investigated. The objectives are to characterize the time-dependent, three-dimensional vortex structure as the plate motion progresses, to ascertain the ramifications of the significant root-to-tip flow on the vortex formation, and to determine the presence of and subsequently investigate any evidence of vortex saturation ("formation parameter") effects. The experiments are conducted in a glass water tank facility, and the diagnostics tools used are dye flow visualization and planar digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV). The vortex structures created by the low-aspect-ratio plate are symmetric ring-like vortices comprised mainly of vorticity generated at the tip edge of the plate. For large rotation amplitudes the dye flow visualization shows the shedding of this ring-like vortex end even the generation of a secondary ring-like vortex, all while the plate is still in motion, indicating the saturation of the primary vortex. The time-varying vortex circulation, calculated from the DPIV measurements in the symmetry plane of the flow, provides quantitative evidence of vortex saturation. It was found that the temporal development of the vortex circulation is complex, which obscures the objective determination of physically relevant saturation times. This difficulty is a direct result of an interaction between the evolving formation of the final ring-like vortex via Kelvin-Helmholtz-like instabilities that are inherent in the separated shear layers emanating from the free edges of the plate, and the strong root-to-tip flow, which is induced by the tip-edge- and side-edge-vortices.

Book excerpt: Heart transplantation remains the primary treatment for heart failure (HF), a deadly disease in which the heart fails to pump sufficient blood to meet the body's needs. Unfortunately, of the 600,000 new HF patients per year, only 2200 (0.3%) of them receive heart transplantation. The critical organ shortage presents a need for artificial devices. Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are implantable blood pumps that serve as an alternative treatment for HF. Unfortunately, stroke is a devastating complication that occurs in about 17-20% of LVAD patients. Since stroke is the result of blood vessel blockage, we hypothesize that LVADs create flow disturbances such as localized stagnation regions that encourages excessive blood clotting (thrombosis) in the LV, which detach and release into the bloodstream. Experiments were performed using the in vitro SDSU cardiac simulator, which reproduces the flow and hemodynamics of a left ventricle attached to a HeartMate II LVAD. The effect of LVAD support on LV flow patterns was assessed by varying the LVAD speed from low (6500rpm) to high (12500rpm). Particle Image Velocimetry was used to image 2-D fluid structures in the LV model. Briefly, fluorescent tracer particles were seeded into the simulator, the particles were illuminated by a laser plane and their motion captured by a high frame-rate camera. Localized stagnation was measured by the stagnicity (S[subscript I], defined as the reciprocal of average velocity within the region of interest. The flow patterns resemble a HF patient as the ventricular inflow jet follows an asymmetric recirculation pattern that redirects the momentum of the fluid stream to the LV outflow tract (LVOT). Once the LVAD is incorporated into the circulation, the fluid stream bifurcates into ventricular outflow and LVAD outflow. As LVAD speed increases further, more fluid is ejected through the LVAD until finally there is a complete series flow. We observe a local stagnation region in the LVOT regardless of LVAD speed. The level of stagnation increases progressively from Pre-LVAD (S[subscript I] =4.20(m/s)−1), parallel (S[subscript I] =4.75 (m/s)−1), to series flow (SI =7.75 (m/s)−1). The results suggest that LVAD support alters the cardiac ejection pathways and increases the risk of thrombosis within the left ventricle.
