Erster Teil Aufbauend auf seiner Phänomenologie des Geistes entwickelt Hegel in den beiden 1812 und 1816 erschienen Bänden eine ontologisch-metaphysische Logik und versucht, die Kategorien nach dem Prinzip der Dialektik systematisch herzuleiten und als ein System der Totalität zu begründen. Hegel hielt die Vorlesungen insgesamt neunmal, zuerst 1805/06 in Jena, dann 1816/17 und 1817/18 in Heidelberg und von 1819 bis zu seinem Tod sechsmal in Berlin. Schon bald nach Hegels Tod wurden sie von Karl Ludwig Michelet auf der Grundlage von Vorlesungsmitschriften und handschriftlichen Notizen Hegels rekonstruiert und herausgegeben. Erstdruck in: Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel's Werke. Vollständige Ausgabe durch einen Verein von Freunden des Verewigten. Vorlesungen über die Geschichte der Philosophie, hg. v. Karl Ludwig Michelet, Berlin 1833–1836. – Der Text folgt im wesentlichen Michelets Rekonstruktion der Vorlesungen. Über die Geschichte der Philosophie hat Hegel bereits in Jena 1805/06, in Heidelberg 1816/17 und 1817/18 und dann in Berlin sechs Mal vollständig gelesen (Sommer 1819, Winter 1820/21 und danach im zweijährigen Turnus 1823/24, 1825/26, 1827/28, 1829/30), im Winter 1831/32 jedoch nur noch den Beginn der Einleitung vortragen können. Von den Jenaer und Heidelberger Kollegien sind bis dato keine Nachschriften bekannt geworden, die Berliner hingegen sind – von Jahrgang zu Jahrgang je unterschiedlich gut – allesamt durch Nachschriften belegt. Mit Band 30,1 erscheint der erste Teilband der auf sechs Teilbände angelegten Edition der Vorlesungen über die Geschichte der Philosophie. Er enthält die Nachschriften des Kollegs vom Sommer 1819 und die Nachschrift des Kollegs vom Winter 1820/21. Die folgenden Teilbände werden die Nachschriften der Kollegien von 1823/24 (Band 30,2), 1825/26 (Band 30,3), 1827/28 (Band 30,4), 1829/30 sowie den Beginn des Kollegs von 1831/32 (Band 30,5) und den Anhang (Band 30,6) beinhalten.
