Book Synopsis Law and (Dis)Order in the Ancient Near East by : Katrien De Graef
Download or read book Law and (Dis)Order in the Ancient Near East written by Katrien De Graef and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mesopotamia is often considered to be the birthplace of law codes. In recognition of this fact and motivated by the perennial interest in the topic among Assyriologists, the 59th Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale was organized in Ghent in 2013 around the theme “Law and (Dis)Order in the Ancient Near East.” Based on papers delivered at that meeting, this volume contains twenty-six essays that focus on archaeological, philological, and historical topics related to order and chaos in the Ancient Near East. Written by a diverse array of international scholars, the contributions to this book explore laws and legal practices in the Ur III, Old Babylonian, Middle Assyrian, and Neo-Assyrian periods in Mesopotamia, as well as in Nuzi and the Hebrew Bible. Among the subjects covered are the Code of Hammurabi, legal phraseology, the archaeological traces of the organization of community life, and biblical law. The volume also contains essays that explore the concepts of chaos/disorder and law/order in divinatory texts and literature. Wide-ranging and cutting-edge, the essays in this collection will be of interest to Assyriologists, especially members of the International Association for Assyriology.

Book Synopsis Chaos from the Ancient World to Early Modernity by : Andreas Höfele
Download or read book Chaos from the Ancient World to Early Modernity written by Andreas Höfele and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaos is a perennial source of fear and fascination. The original "formless void" (tohu-wa-bohu) mentioned in the book of Genesis, chaos precedes the created world: a state of anarchy before the establishment of cosmic order. But chaos has frequently also been conceived of as a force that persists in the cosmos and in society and threatens to undo them both. From the cultures of the ancient Near East and the Old Testament to early modernity, notions of the divine have included the power to check and contain as well as to unleash chaos as a sanction for the violation of social and ethical norms. Yet chaos has also been construed as a necessary supplement to order, a region of pure potentiality at the base of reality that provides the raw material of creation or even constitutes a kind of alternative order itself. As such, it generates its own peculiar 'formations of the formless'. Focusing on the connection between the cosmic and the political, this volume traces the continuities and re-conceptualizations of chaos from the ancient Near East to early modern Europe across a variety of cultures, discourses and texts. One of the questions it poses is how these pre-modern 'chaos theories' have survived into and reverberate in our own time.

Book Synopsis Coping With the Gods by : Henk Versnel
Download or read book Coping With the Gods written by Henk Versnel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by a critical reconsideration of current monolithic approaches to the study of Greek religion, this book argues that ancient Greeks displayed a disquieting capacity to validate two (or more) dissonant, if not contradictory, representations of the divine world in a complementary rather than mutually exclusive manner. From this perspective the six chapters explore problems inherent in: order vs. variety/chaos in polytheism, arbitrariness vs. justice in theodicy, the peaceful co-existence of mono- and polytheistic theologies, human traits in divine imagery, divine omnipotence vs. limitation of power, and ruler cult. Based on an intimate knowledge of ancient realia and literary testimonia the book stands out for its extensive application of relevant perceptions drawn from cultural anthropology, theology, cognitive science, psychology, and linguistics.
Book Synopsis Boethius as a Paradigm of Late Ancient Thought by : Thomas Böhm
Download or read book Boethius as a Paradigm of Late Ancient Thought written by Thomas Böhm and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Decrees of Memphis and Canopus: Vol. II (Routledge Revivals) by : E. A. Wallis Budge
Download or read book The Decrees of Memphis and Canopus: Vol. II (Routledge Revivals) written by E. A. Wallis Budge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of three volumes exploring some of the most remarkable insights into Ancient Egypt to have come to light in modern times. The first two volumes deal with the Rosetta Stone, an outstanding archaeological discovery which has supplied the basis for Egyptian decipherment; the final volume explores the "Stele of Canopus", discovered in 1866. The significance of the Rosetta Stone lies in the three different languages inscribed on it: Koine Greek, Demotic Egyptian, and, crucially, Hieroglyphic. This has facilitated a vast increase in our understanding of the sacred language of Ancient Egypt, as well as enhancing our understanding of the nature of kingship at a time of immense cultural transformation. First published in 1904, this title provides an accessible general introduction to this fascinating subject, useful for the amateur enthusiast as well as undergraduate students.
