Da Change Management und Organisationsentwicklung weitgehend dasselbe meinen, aber ersteres spätestens mit der Publikation von Doppler und Lauterburg zum in Deutschland verbreitetsten betriebswirtschaftlichen Konzept zur Gestaltung betrieblichen Wandels geworden ist, während letzteres historisch betrachtet dem Change Management vorausgegangen ist, besteht die Aufgabe des Buches darin, die Evolution der Organisationsentwicklung sowie die Ursachen für das Erscheinen derselben im historischen Kontext zu erklären und den Übergang zum Change Management zu beschreiben sowie den Gegenstand des Change Management zu definieren und diesen einer Kritik zu unterziehen. Außerdem werden ein Fazit und ein Ausblick in die Zukunft von Change Management und der Gestaltung des Wandels im Unternehmen vorgenommen.
