Book excerpt: "Voices from the Prostate Underground offers excellent insight into the experiences of men and their families who have dealt with and survived prostate cancer. Their testimonies provide a great encouragement for those facing treatment." J. Lynn Martell, Director of Special Services, Radiation Medicine, Loma Linda University Medical Center Men don't talk about Prostate Cancer, so who is a guy supposed to talk to about treatment options and other "guy" issues when he is diagnosed with prostate cancer? Talk to a urologist, and they generally recommend surgery. Talk to a radiation oncologist, and radiation is the best approach. Others health care providers prescribe hormones, "watchful waiting", laparoscopic surgery, cryosurgery, brachytherapy, and more. What doctors recommend is based on their own experiences, training, and professional bias. The "whole story" is not generally available from any one specialist and what you hear from your doctor generally results in more questions than answers. "Voices from the Prostate Underground" includes the stories of men and their families, who have survived prostate cancer through a variety of treatments. The stories are told in their own, unique voices as each man answers the five questions that newly diagnosed men most often ask those who have survived the disease: How were you diagnosed? What did you decide to do? What treatment did you decide on? How did things work out? How did the experience affect your life? All funds raised from the sale of this book will be donated to UsToo and the Slater Research Chair at the Loma Linda University Medical Center to support cancer research and treatment.

Book excerpt: This fine art monograph/faux underground comic facsimile is a psychedelic trip through the hippie movement. In 2017, Gary Panter created an art installation, Hippie Trip, inspired by his first visit to a head shop in 1968. It expanded his mind to the possibilities of psychedelic art and music, analog crafts and drug culture. Crashpad is an extension of that installation and a riff on underground comics creators such as Zap's R. Crumb, Victor Moscoso, Robert Williams, and other icons of that era.

In courageously intimate terms, he reflects on his relationship with his stern father - whom Luza worshipped from afar until sharing rat-infested barns brought the consummate general and intellectual son closer together."--Cover

Book excerpt: “A remarkably nuanced, empathetic, and well-crafted work of journalism, [The Inevitable] explores what might be called the right-to-die underground, a world of people who wonder why a medical system that can do so much to try to extend their lives can do so little to help them end those lives in a peaceful and painless way.”—Brooke Jarvis, The New Yorker More states and countries are passing right-to-die laws that allow the sick and suffering to end their lives at pre-planned moments, with the help of physicians. But even where these laws exist, they leave many people behind. The Inevitable moves beyond margins of the law to the people who are meticulously planning their final hours—far from medical offices, legislative chambers, hospital ethics committees, and polite conversation. It also shines a light on the people who help them: loved ones and, sometimes, clandestine groups on the Internet that together form the “euthanasia underground.” Katie Engelhart, a veteran journalist, focuses on six people representing different aspects of the right to die debate. Two are doctors: a California physician who runs a boutique assisted death clinic and has written more lethal prescriptions than anyone else in the U.S.; an Australian named Philip Nitschke who lost his medical license for teaching people how to end their lives painlessly and peacefully at “DIY Death” workshops. The other four chapters belong to people who said they wanted to die because they were suffering unbearably—of old age, chronic illness, dementia, and mental anguish—and saw suicide as their only option. Spanning North America, Europe, and Australia, The Inevitable offers a deeply reported and fearless look at a morally tangled subject. It introduces readers to ordinary people who are fighting to find dignity and authenticity in the final hours of their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays exploring medieval castration, as reflected in archaeology, law, historical record, and literary motifs. Castration and castrati have always been facets of western culture, from myth and legend to law and theology, from eunuchs guarding harems to the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century castrati singers. Metaphoric castration pervadesa number of medieval literary genres, particularly the Old French fabliaux - exchanges of power predicated upon the exchange or absence of sexual desire signified by genitalia - but the plain, literal act of castration and its implications are often overlooked. This collection explores this often taboo subject and its implications for cultural mores and custom in Western Europe, seeking to demystify and demythologize castration. Its subjects includearchaeological studies of eunuchs; historical accounts of castration in trials of combat; the mutilation of political rivals in medieval Wales; Anglo-Saxon and Frisian legal and literary examples of castration as punishment; castration as comedy in the Old French fabliaux; the prohibition against genital mutilation in hagiography; and early-modern anxieties about punitive castration enacted on the Elizabethan stage. The introduction reflects on these topics in the context of arguably the most well-known victim of castration in the middle ages, Abelard. LARISSA TRACY is Associate Professor of Medieval Literature at Longwood University. Contributors: Larissa Tracy, Kathryn Reusch, Shaun Tougher, Jack Collins, Rolf H. Book excerpt: My book is about everything that I know about my family, both about my mother’s and father’s side of the family in addition to my interactions towards or with each of them. I was inspired by a late great maternal uncle to pursue such a project. First, I re-collected everything that I could about various family members. It was simply a matter of thinking about what I know and what I could jot down on paper in the comfortable setting of my home or automobiles. I conducted a vast number of interviews from members of each side of the family. This was after I organized a family tree and decided to proceed from that. Those interviews led me to further interviews. Wherever and whenever I could, I got many telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. Sometimes, I researched the Internet when given information about their affiliations or personal pursuits. I utilized other sources in addition to interviews. Some sources included obituaries, books, magazines, newspaper articles, and just plain statistics regarding whatever endeavors they had, such as with my only child. Pursuing this type of manuscript required hard work, devotion, and perseverance. This book serves as an encouragement to others to do family research and record whatever they find. One should only seek the positive and sidestep the negative. One derives a great deal of joy and satisfaction from engaging in such a project. This work is a reflection of you and how you see things in the lenses of your life. I hope that many who read this book take it upon themselves to do the same as I have done. Doing this work was truly a joy and a blessing.
