Book excerpt: Realizing that my book on the voice, "Health, Speech and Song," published in 1902, was inadequate to cope with the rapid progress in voice culture during the last few years, I decided that a more comprehensive and progressive work was essential, if my labors were to prove of any value. I have, therefore, written an entirely new book, embracing what I considered of vital interest in the earlier work and developing it to meet what I believe to be the need of today. I sincerely hope that the result of my added years of untiring investigation will both carry conviction and prove of service. Thirty years of practical experience as a lecturer and teacher of voice culture have led me to believe that there is but one reasonable way of training the vocal organ, and that its systematic development can be so practically presented in book form, that students, to a great extent, can do the fundamental work without the aid of a master.

Book Synopsis Neural Control of Speech by : Frank H. Guenther
Download or read book Neural Control of Speech written by Frank H. Guenther and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and unified account of the neural computations underlying speech production, offering a theoretical framework bridging the behavioral and the neurological literatures. In this book, Frank Guenther offers a comprehensive, unified account of the neural computations underlying speech production, with an emphasis on speech motor control rather than linguistic content. Guenther focuses on the brain mechanisms responsible for commanding the musculature of the vocal tract to produce articulations that result in an acoustic signal conveying a desired string of syllables. Guenther provides neuroanatomical and neurophysiological descriptions of the primary brain structures involved in speech production, looking particularly at the cerebral cortex and its interactions with the cerebellum and basal ganglia, using basic concepts of control theory (accompanied by nontechnical explanations) to explore the computations performed by these brain regions. Guenther offers a detailed theoretical framework to account for a broad range of both behavioral and neurological data on the production of speech. He discusses such topics as the goals of the neural controller of speech; neural mechanisms involved in producing both short and long utterances; and disorders of the speech system, including apraxia of speech and stuttering. Offering a bridge between the neurological and behavioral literatures on speech production, the book will be a valuable resource for researchers in both fields.

Book Synopsis Command Of The Air by : General Giulio Douhet
Download or read book Command Of The Air written by General Giulio Douhet and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the pantheon of air power spokesmen, Giulio Douhet holds center stage. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates-and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very controversy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh “Boom” Trenchard of Great Britain and William “Billy” Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. This reprint is offered in the spirit of continuing the dialogue that Douhet himself so perceptively began with the first edition of this book, published in 1921. Readers may well find much that they disagree with in this book, but also much that is of enduring value. The vital necessity of Douhet’s central vision-that command of the air is all important in modern warfare-has been proven throughout the history of wars in this century, from the fighting over the Somme to the air war over Kuwait and Iraq.

Book Synopsis Intraoperative Cranial Nerve Monitoring in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery by : Joseph Scharpf
Download or read book Intraoperative Cranial Nerve Monitoring in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery written by Joseph Scharpf and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the scope of cranial nerve monitoring of all cranial nerves that are of practical importance in head, neck, and thyroid surgery. It discussed enhanced patient outcomes in a wide array of surgical procedures in the head and neck that require the maintenance of complex regional functions by protecting cranial nerve integrity. Organized into four parts, the book begins with Part I offering historical perspectives on the subject while simultaneously reviewing various basic and advanced electrophysiology. Part II thoroughly reviews the extra-temporal bone facial nerve (CN VII), Glossopharyngeal Nerve (CN IX), Vagal/Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve (CN X), Spinal Accessory Nerve (CN XI), and Hypoglossal Nerve (CN XII). Subsequent chapters in Part III provide a complete and applied understanding of the neurophysiological principles that facilitate the surgeon’s ability to monitor any nerve and intraoperative neural stimulation and nerve monitoring. The book presents various techniques as the standard of care to provide optimal neural detection, understand the neural functional real-time status during surgery and optimize specific surgical outcomes such as thyroid surgical outcomes. Closing chapters offer essential conversations regarding ethical considerations in nerve monitoring and medical malpractice. Filling a gap in the literature, Intraoperative Cranial Nerve Monitoring in Otolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery provides a single source for surgeons who wish to optimize their outcomes in patient care and accelerate their learning curve to the level of more experienced surgeons.
