Beurmann did not abandon the idea of collecting a vocabulary of the Tigre language and so he daily wrote down those words which he had heard from Abu Bekr, and as he was obliged to speak with him only Arabic he followed Humbert's Guide francais-arabe, asking always the Arabic word of Humbert and writing down the Tigre translation. Though he wished to obtain all those words in Tigre which that Arabic vocabulary contains nevertheless the preparation for his second expedition which alas! Had so deplorable an end required so much time that even he with all his extraordinary energy and zeal was not able to finish this work. So when he had started again on the day after Christmas 1861 in search of Vogel's te mains with the firm intention either to cross the whole African continent from Benghazi to Chartum and Massowa, or never more to return, the materials he had collected were sent to me to be published. It belongs to the great Bantu family, and is the vernacular of a tribe whose habitat is just to the north of Mombasa, about 39° East longitude and 3° South latitude, and entirely within the sphere of British influence. The Rev. W. E. Taylor, m.a., already favourably known for linguistic researches, has, as an agent of the Church Missionary Society, itinerated in their midst, and made use of his oppor tunities to make this contribution to science. It consists of a Vocabulary, preceded by remarks on the language, and with an Appendix of genuine language-specimens, accom panied by translations. The articles attached to some words are very full, and many local folk-lore and tribal subjects of interest are touched upon. On the whole it is a very credit able performance, and will no doubt lead on to translations of portions of the Holy Scriptures, and of religious and educational works. Grande. The present grammar, designed to come out in the centenary of the completion of Zimmern's work, fills thus a gap. Besides, it is based on both classical and modern Semitic languages, it takes new material of these last decades into account, and situates the Semitic languages in the wider context of Afro-Asiatic. The introduction briefly presents the languages in question. The main parts of the work are devoted to phonology, morphology, and syntax, with elaborate charts and diagrams. Then follows a discussion of fundamental questions related to lexicographical analysis. The study is supplemented by a glossary of linguistic terms used in Semitics, by a selective bibliography, by a general index, and by an index of words and forms. The book is the result of twenty-five years of research and teaching in comparative Semitic grammar.
