Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For anyone who wants to learn a foreign language, this is the method that will finally make the words stick. “A brilliant and thoroughly modern guide to learning new languages.”—Gary Marcus, cognitive psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Guitar Zero At thirty years old, Gabriel Wyner speaks six languages fluently. He didn’t learn them in school—who does? Rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources—and here he wants to show others what he’s discovered. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You’ll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you’ll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language. And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you’ll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. This is brain hacking at its most exciting, taking what we know about neuroscience and linguistics and using it to create the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn a foreign language in the spare minutes of your day.

For nearly twenty years, Ron has been writing short stories and news. For the last four years he has been writing poetry. In his poetry, Ron writes about life and times of his life, and what he has seen on his many journeys breaking bread with a wide variety of people from all over the world. In the United States alone, he has traveled from the Pacific coast of California to the shores of the Atlantic in Massachusetts. “Listen to the Sounds of the City” says a lot about Chicago, where he has lived most of his life. Ron’s experiences are many, from good times to bad times, happy to sad. You will find something in this book that will touch your emotions in some way – keep a box of tissues handy. This is not average poetry – it is quite different. This is A TEMPLE BETWEEN WORDS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Words as Events introduces the tradition of short, communicative rhyming couplets, the mantinádes, as still sung and recited in a variety of performance situations on the island of Crete. Recently, these poems have also entered modern mass media and they are widely being exchanged as text messages by Cretans. Focusing on the multi-functionality of the short form, Sykäri demonstrates how the traditional register gives voice to individual experiences in spontaneous utterances. The local focus on communicative economy and artistry is further examined in a close analysis of the processes and ideals of composition. By analyzing how the “restrictions” of form and performative conventions in fact generate impulses of creativity, the author creates a theoretical approach that is sensitive to the special characteristics of the short, rhymed poetic traditions. In this interdisciplinary study, the reader is invited to become familiar with the current folklore theory of oral poetry, which has a long tradition in Finland. The author combines the results of earlier folkloristic and anthropological insights, and extends the theoretical concerns further to address questions of spontaneity and individual agency. The research data has been produced in communicative interactions during long-term fieldwork. As a result, the short, rhymed poetry, often neglected by scholars in earlier research paradigms, can now be seen in new light – specifically as dialogic poetry – through its extended, multi-layered dialogic qualities.

Teachers will find the answers they need and can use on almost any topic from phonics and word walls for beginning readers to guided reading, literature circles, and writing journals and workshops for more confident readers;from using traditional texts to comics, songs and the Internet to cover the complete gamut of the new literacies;from using testing as a teaching tool to creating a classroom community that is both diverse and welcoming. But Literacy 101 is more than just a guide — it’s also the compelling story of one teacher’s journey through literacy. David writes frankly about what has worked and not worked for him over the years, and how what looks good on paper may need to be adapted for a real classroom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book for teachers, by teachers, from elementary school to university level classrooms. It is about the use of creative instructional strategies in K-12 classroom settings, and the transformations the teachers made in their journeys from being traditional practitioners to “becoming pedagogical” in their approaches to teaching and learning across the curriculum. Over twenty teachers conducted research in their classrooms on the implementation of creative strategies, tactics, graphics organizers, and visual journals in teaching and learning. They have written their inquiries in a narrative style, informed by various forms of arts based educational research. Their research is approachable and usable by other teachers who are interested in becoming reflective-reflexive practitioners. Many of the strategies, tactics, and graphics organizers are described by Barrie Bennett in his widely used textbook, Beyond Monet: The Artful Science of Instructional Intelligence. However, through their journeys of becoming teacher-learner-researchers, many discovered numerous, creative variations of Bennett’s work as it was implemented in their classrooms. While there are many professional books that provide ideas on collaborative learning and creative teaching approaches, there is very little published research on the efficacy of these concepts in the K-12 classroom. These inquiries provide practical insights into how inspired teachers can conduct research on improving their own practice as well as on greatly improving their students’ learning. Thus, this book has widespread interest for teachers and administrators who seek to implement systemic changes in the ways that teachers teach, and children learn, in the 21st century.
