Book Synopsis The Linguistics of Olfaction by : Łukasz Jędrzejowski
Download or read book The Linguistics of Olfaction written by Łukasz Jędrzejowski and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents novel cross-linguistic insights into how olfactory experiences are expressed in typologically (un-)related languages both from a synchronic and from a diachronic perspective. It contains a general introduction to the topic and fourteen chapters based on philological investigation and thorough fieldwork data from Basque, Beja, Fon, Formosan languages, Hebrew, Indo-European languages, Japanese, Kartvelian languages, Purepecha, and languages of northern Vanuatu. Topics discussed in the individual chapters involve, inter alia, lexical olfactory repertoires and naming strategies, non-literal meanings of olfactory expressions and their semantic change, reduplication, colexification, mimetics, and language contact. The findings provide the reader with a range of fascinating facts about perception description, contribute to a deeper understanding of how olfaction as an understudied sense is encoded linguistically, and offer new theoretical perspectives on how some parts of our cognitive system are verbalized cross-culturally. This volume is highly relevant to lexical typologists, historical linguists, grammarians, and anthropologists.

Download or read book Anarchafeminism written by Chiara Bottici and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we be sure the oppressed do not become oppressors in their turn? How can we create a feminism that doesn't turn into yet another tool for oppression? It has become commonplace to argue that, in order to fight the subjugation of women, we have to unpack the ways different forms of oppression intersect with one another: class, race, gender, sexuality, disability, and ecology, to name only a few. By arguing that there is no single factor, or arche, explaining the oppression of women, Chiara Bottici proposes a radical anarchafeminist philosophy inspired by two major claims: that there is something specific to the oppression of women, and that, in order to fight that, we need to untangle all other forms of oppression and the anthropocentrism they inhabit. Anarchism needs feminism to address the continued subordination of all femina, but feminism needs anarchism if it does not want to become the privilege of a few. Anarchafeminism calls for a decolonial and deimperial position and for a renewed awareness of the somatic communism connecting all different life forms on the planet. In this new revolutionary vision, feminism does not mean the liberation of the lucky few, but liberation for all living creatures from both capitalist exploitation and an androcentric politics of domination. Either all or none of us will be free.

Book Synopsis The Wor(l)ds of Neapolitan Arts and Crafts by : Raffaella Antinucci
Download or read book The Wor(l)ds of Neapolitan Arts and Crafts written by Raffaella Antinucci and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays investigates the terminology of traditional Neapolitan arts and crafts analyzed from a novel linguistic and cultural perspective. With some exceptions, the trades examined in the contributions—including pizza and pastry making, the art of presepio (crib), lute-making and coral dealing, among others—still exist in Naples and in the Campania region. They represent an important component of the cultural heritage of the area that this volume brings to light by furthering current research in the fields of terminology, history and cultural anthropology. The book is divided into two sections, corresponding to the two languages in which the articles are written (English and French), although the terminological analyses also focus on Italian, Neapolitan and Spanish. This choice is expressly demanded by the political legacy of Naples, which for six centuries was alternately dominated by French, Spanish and Austrian rulers whose lasting influence on the city’s traditions and language the essays explore.
Book Synopsis Dynamics of Morphological Productivity by : Francesco Gardani
Download or read book Dynamics of Morphological Productivity written by Francesco Gardani and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-05-30 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dynamics of Morphological Productivity, Francesco Gardani explores the evolution of the productivity of the noun inflectional classes of Latin and Old Italian, covering a span of almost 2,000 years – an absolute novelty for the theory of diachrony and for Latin and Italo-Romance linguistics. By providing an original set of criteria for measuring productivity, based on the investigation of loanword integration, conversions, and class shift, Gardani provides a substantial contribution to the theory of inflection, as well as to the study of the morphological integration of loanwords. The result is a wealth of empirical facts, including data from the contact languages Etruscan, Ancient Greek, Germanic, Arabic, Byzantine Greek, Old French and Provençal, accompanied by brilliant and groundbreaking analyses.

Book Synopsis Sforza Pallavicino by : Maarten Delbeke
Download or read book Sforza Pallavicino written by Maarten Delbeke and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a key figure in baroque Rome, Sforza Pallavicino embodies many of the apparent tensions and contradictions of his era: a man of the church deeply involved in the new science, a nobleman and courtier drawn to ascetism and theology, a controversial polemicist involved in poetry and the arts. This volume collects essays by specialists in the fields and disciplines that cover Pallavicino’s activities as a scholar, author and Jesuit, and situate him within the Roman cultural, political and social elite of his times. Through the figure of Pallavicino, an image of baroque Rome emerges that challenges historical periodisations and disciplinary boundaries. Contributors: Silvia Apollonio, Stefan Bauer, Eraldo Bellini, Chiara Catalano, Maarten Delbeke, Maria Pia Donato, Federica Favino, Irene Fosi, Sven K. Knebel, Alessandro Metlica, Anselm Ramelow, Pietro Giulio Riga, and Jon R. Snyder.

Book Synopsis Experiential Constructions in Latin by : Chiara Fedriani
Download or read book Experiential Constructions in Latin written by Chiara Fedriani and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is about the morphosyntactic encoding of feelings and emotions in Latin. It offers a corpus-based investigation of the Latin data, benefiting from insights of the functional and typological approach to language. Chiara Fedriani describes a patterned variation in Latin Experiential constructions, also revisiting the so-called impersonal constructions, and shows how and why such a variation is at the root of diachronic change. The data discussed in this book also show that Latin constitutes an interesting stage within a broader diachronic development, since it retains some ancient Indo-European features that gradually disappeared and went lost in the Romance languages.
