Ce sont des sociétés segmentaires où l'équilibre social et la protection des individus sont très largement assurés par des groupements contractuels à forte dominante horizontale. La christianisation d'une grande partie de l'Europe occidentale, le développement des systèmes domaniaux et la concentration des pouvoirs centraux à partir du VIIe siècle renforcent la domination des puissants et la hiérarchisation de la société. Les Carolingiens entreprennent alors une véritable mise en ordre hiérarchique qui touche tous les secteurs de la vie sociale, en s'appuyant sur les structures monastiques et intégratives d'un empire ayant vocation à s'identifier à l'ecclesia.Nourri de l'apport des sciences sociales, l'ouvrage propose donc une lecture anthropologique et sociologique du haut Moyen Âge. Eventually, the Christian dimension of Roman identity gained ground. The shifting concepts of Romanness represent a methodological challenge for studies of ethnicity because, depending on its uses, Roman identity may be regarded as ‘ethnic’ in a broad sense, but under most criteria, it is not. Romanness is indeed a test case how an established and prestigious social identity can acquire many different shades of meaning, which we would class as civic, political, imperial, ethnic, cultural, legal, religious, regional or as status groups. This book offers comprehensive overviews of the meaning of Romanness in most (former) Roman provinces, complemented by a number of comparative and thematic studies. A similarly wide-ranging overview has not been available so far.

La religion, naturellement, structure cette société et impose à tout homme de préparer sa mort – ce qui n'empêche pas de profiter des instants de loisir bien plus fréquents qu'on ne l'imagine. Jean Verdon brosse avec maestra un panorama sans équivalent, riche et foisonnant.

The medieval Western European definition of marriage was unique: before the legal consequences of marriage came into being, the parties had to promise to engage in sexual union only with one partner and to remain in the marriage until one of the parties died. Normative texts, built on the foundations of the scriptures of several religious traditions, provided an impressive intellectual framework around marriage.
