Book excerpt: Visionary social thinker Joel Kotkin looks ahead to America in 2050, revealing how the addition of one hundred million Americans by midcentury will transform how we all live, work, and prosper. In stark contrast to the rest of the world's advanced nations, the United States is growing at a record rate and, according to census projections, will be home to four hundred million Americans by 2050. This projected rise in population is the strongest indicator of our long-term economic strength, Joel Kotkin believes, and will make us more diverse and more competitive than any nation on earth. Drawing on prodigious research, firsthand reportage, and historical analysis, The Next Hundred Million reveals how this unprecedented growth will take physical shape and change the face of America. The majority of the additional hundred million Americans will find their homes in suburbia, though the suburbs of tomorrow will not resemble the Levittowns of the 1950s or the sprawling exurbs of the late twentieth century. The suburbs of the twenty-first century will be less reliant on major cities for jobs and other amenities and, as a result, more energy efficient. Suburbs will also be the melting pots of the future as more and more immigrants opt for dispersed living over crowded inner cities and the majority in the United States becomes nonwhite by 2050. In coming decades, urbanites will flock in far greater numbers to affordable, vast, and autoreliant metropolitan areas-such as Houston, Phoenix, and Las Vegas-than to glamorous but expensive industrial cities, such as New York and Chicago. Kotkin also foresees that the twenty-first century will be marked by a resurgence of the American heartland, far less isolated in the digital era and a crucial source of renewable fuels and real estate for a growing population. But in both big cities and small towns across the country, we will see what Kotkin calls "the new localism"-a greater emphasis on family ties and local community, enabled by online networks and the increasing numbers of Americans working from home. The Next Hundred Million provides a vivid snapshot of America in 2050 by focusing not on power brokers, policy disputes, or abstract trends, but rather on the evolution of the more intimate units of American society-families, towns, neighborhoods, industries. It is upon the success or failure of these communities, Kotkin argues, that the American future rests.

Book excerpt: This book presents the "New Vision 2050," which adds the concept of the "platinum society" to the "Vision 2050".The 20th century was a century in which energy led the development of material civilization, resulting in deletion of resources, global warming and climate change. What form should sustainable material and energy take to protect the Earth? The "Vision 2050" was established 20 years ago as a model that we should pursue for the next half century. Fortunately, the world is on course for the Vision 2050.The 21st century will be a century in which we seek qualitative richness, with the Vision 2050 as the material basis. That is, a "platinum society" that has resource self-sufficiency and resource symbiosis, and where people remain active throughout their lives and have a wide range of choices and opportunities for free participation. Since the author presented the concept of "Vision 2050" in 1999, the idea has been introduced in two books entitled Vision 2050: Roadmap for a Sustainable Earth (2008) and Beyond the Limits to Growth: New Ideas for Sustainability from Japan (2014). The latter includes a chapter that sheds light on the concept of a "platinum society". In this publication, the author presents the "New Vision 2050" in more detail. It discusses future directions on carbon accounting, performance measurement and reporting as well as links between climate accounting and business processes, product and service development, supply chain innovation, economic successes and stakeholder relations.Companies are increasingly called on to contribute to combatting climate change and also face the challenges presented by climate-change related costs, risks and benefits. Risks can result from unpredictable weather conditions and government regulations, such as the EU emission trading system and new building codes. Climate change also offers numerous opportunities, such as energy efficiency innovations and carbon neutral products and production.Good management requires that carbon emissions are tracked and climate-related costs, risks and benefits are identified, measured and assessed. As such, research addressing corporate accounting frameworks and tools is of increasing importance when it comes to managing these carbon and climate-related issues.

Book excerpt: In 2050, the billions of people living on Earth have found a way to manage the planetary system effectively. Everyone has access to adequate food, shelter, and clean water. Human health is no longer considered outside of the health of the ecosystems in which people live. Ecological awareness is an integral part of education. People respond effectively to social and environmental hazards, and societies care for the most vulnerable amongst them. The economy, too, has shifted. Carbon dioxide management is under control, and energy efficiency is the norm. The remaining rainforests have been preserved. Coral reefs are recovering. Fish stocks are thriving. Is any of this really possible? How can our complex social and economic systems interact with a complex planetary system undergoing rapid change to create a future we all want? This book is a contextualised collation of ideas articulated by the 50 participants of the Planet 2050 workshop held in Lund in October 2008, as part of The Planet in 2050, an interdisciplinary Fast Track Initiative of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme. Participants were selected from academia and the sustainability practice community to give a wide-ranging, multi-cultural, trans-disciplinary set of perspectives. This collection explores four broad sectoral themes: energy and technologies; development, economies and culture; environment; and land use change. By doing so, this book emphasises the importance of a social dialogue on our collective future, and our responsibility to the Earth. It makes strong statements about what needs to happen to the global economy for a sustainable future and documents a new kind of scholarly discussion, engaging people from diverse knowledge communities in a spirit of exploration and reflexivity. The book provides a focus for dialogue and further study for postgraduates and researchers interested in global change as a multi-faceted, socio-environmental phenomenon, and as the book is written in an accessible scholarly style, assuming no prior specialist knowledge, it is also suitable for those involved in sustainability initiatives and policy.

These are the questions being asked and answered in Visions of 2050.

Book excerpt: Is the future a choice between two bleak alternatives? One of world collapse triggered by a combination of global warming, conspicuous consumption, warfare, and the greed of multinational companies? Or one in which Earth is saved at the cost of all humanity agreeing to lead the frugal and austere lives characteristic of today's third world countries? An inspirational blueprint for those wanting to be future makers rather than future takers, this book offers a third choice. According to Peter Ellyard -- former Executive Director for the Australian Commission for the Future -- we are at a tipping point in history. Globalisation, increased technological and social innovation, the growth of the educated middle class and democracy, and a shared awareness of our ecological vulnerability are combining to offer us a chance of designing sustainable, diverse societies which are prosperous in every way. Ellyard summarises where we are now and outlines how different mindsets and strategies can realise such a future for all. He suggests over 100 potential innovations which would not only enrich the creators but help us all live better and sustainably. In doing so he describes the emerging 21st Century global marketplace. This book is for leaders and potential leaders, especially those in government, corporations, education, and in indigenous and rural communities -- and for enterprising Generation Xs and Ys who want to make a difference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme for for this book is the evolution of the world order to 2050. The basic premise is that we are living at a time of geo-political transformation. The world order that has served us well since the Second World War is starting to feel a little dated. The institutions created after World War II no longer seem to serve adequately the problems we face. Not only are we facing a new type of problem, the geo-political balance is changing as the global economy evolves to reflect the impact of the newly developed information technologies.Much change in the world can be laid down to two factors - the re-structuring of the world economy and a changing climate. The re-structuring has been enabled by advances in technology in recent decades, allowing for the extension of global supply chains and new markets to be created. This has led to a shift in the balance of economic advantage away from Europe and North America, towards East and South Asia. These shifts have yet to fully play out and the study examined the pathways they could take in the next 30 years.A changing climate is also starting to have an impact upon the world order. Areas that have previously been inhospitable to human activity, such as the Arctic, are now starting to open up. Equally, areas in which human activity has been possible to date, such as the Sahel, are starting to become hostile to human activity. As the climate changes and has an impact upon human activity, issues such as migration and economic potential may come to the fore. We explored these issues through our thematic studies.Together, the seven lines of enquiry provide a coherent approach to future geo-politics that focuses on what we believe to be the significant trends to 2050.

Book excerpt: The future is the wildest destination we can ever visit, a place and time so complex that it requires study and an exercise of the imagination before leaving. But the future is also the result of our predictions. One way to start to positively influence it, then, is to try to imagine it as we would like it to be. This is the first step in making it happen. No one realizes a future that they dare not even imagine. What climate should we prepare for and what shall we bring with us? What will we eat in 2050? How will we dress? What kind of cities will people live in? Where will young people go to have fun? What experiences shouldn’t be missed? What languages, currencies, cures will be there? What will shopping be like and how will we move? In a planet inhabited by robots, cyborgs and animal species believed to be extinct, every aspect of life will be very distant from our current habits. But the indications contained in these pages are sure to be of great help for everyone, be it regular travelers or new explorers facing their first journey into the future.

This comprehensive and compelling book will cover the most significant trends that are shaping the coming decades, with each of its twenty chapters elegantly and authoritatively outlined by Economist contributors, and rich in supporting facts and figures. It will chart the rise and fall of fertility rates across continents; how energy resources will change in light of new technology, and how different nations will deal with major developments in science and warfare.
