Book Synopsis Speaking Through the Aspens by : J. Mallea-Olaetxe
Download or read book Speaking Through the Aspens written by J. Mallea-Olaetxe and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speaking Through the Aspens analyzes the content of thousands of arboglyphs in the mountains of Nevada and California by topic—language, politics, the Basque homeland, the sheepherd’s life, sex, and pictorial themes. In addition, author Mallea-Olaetxe has examined such sheepherder artifacts as sheep camps and bread ovens, conducted extensive interviews with former herders and sheep company personnel, and undertaken research in immigration and other records. The result is a highly original work of history—a detailed account of the lives of Basque sheepherders in the American West. For the first time, these men who contributed so much to the development of the region, many of whom went on to establish the West’s thriving Basque community, speak for themselves about their experiences. Enhanced by numerous illustrations, this book is history at its most engrossing, essential reading for scholars and anyone curious about the arboglyph phenomenon.

Book Synopsis Inventing the Recording by : Eva Moreda Rodríguez
Download or read book Inventing the Recording written by Eva Moreda Rodríguez and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventing the Recording focuses on the decades in which recorded sound went from a technological possibility to a commercial and cultural artefact. Through the analysis of a specific and unique national context, author Eva Moreda Rodríguez tells the stories of institutions and individuals in Spain and discusses the development of discourses and ideas in close connection with national concerns and debates, all while paying close attention to original recordings from this era. The book starts with the arrival in Spain of notices about Edison's invention of the phonograph in 1877, followed by the first demonstrations of the invention (1878-1882) by scientists and showmen. These demonstrations greatly stimulated the imagination of scientists, journalists and playwrights, who spent the rest of the 1880s speculating about the phonograph and its potential to revolutionize society once it was properly developed and marketed. The book then moves on to analyse the 'traveling phonographs' and salones fonográficos of the 1890s and early 1900s, with phonographs being paraded around Spain and exhibited in group listening sessions in theatres, private homes and social spaces pertaining to different social classes. Finally, the book covers the development of an indigenous recording industry dominated by the so-called gabinetes fonográficos, small businesses that sold imported phonographs, produced their own recordings, and shaped early discourses about commercial phonography and the record as a commodity between 1896 and 1905.

Erika gives up and wishes to return to her country, but a moment before she boards her flight, she is arrested as a suspect in an attempt to assassinate Veronica. Veronica is no other than the divorcee of Eduardo, a stunning socialite, owner of a luxurious spa in Mexico City. Who is the terrifying assassin? Is it Erika's beloved, as the police suspect? Perhaps it is Erika herself? The criminal trial that you will witness in this book will swiftly turn into a captivating and fascinating mystery. An exciting, intricate and moving family saga. The readers are drawn into a series of events which branch out and surprise with every new chapter, exactly like in Viva Librte's previous book, Dancing Life. The fascinating plot is partly based on a true story, and is a personal evidence of the author. After a thorough research her book presents us with a cunning investigator, a decent criminal defense attorney, and a general prosecutor who is tormented by his conscience. Those three will assist her throughout the story in presenting the confusing legal system of The Tequila State. In her picturesque depictions Viva Librte gives us a taste of Mexico's views, scents, and authentic and exceptional colors and sights. This is a 'must' for the enthusiasts of Mexico and the Latin-American culture.
