Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erwin Fleissner, an eminent cancer researcher and teacher, offers a personal and professional reflection on the most significant developments in molecular genetics and cell biology over the past fifty years. Contrasting the humanistic side of scientific research with more deterministic or "mechanical" explanations of life processes, Fleissner discusses everything from natural selection to the tradition of rational inquiry stemming from the Enlightenment. He goes on to describe the structures of macromolecules and their "organizing" principles as well as cancer genes, stem cells, and the Human Genome Project. He also explores neuronal cells and the emergence of consciousness and how biological evolution is the foundation of our personal reality as well as our global responsibility. Fleissner asserts that scientific investigations do not negate our essential "humanness"; nor should the public fear them. Taking an optimistic perspective, he argues that a deeper understanding of ourselves as biological entities ultimately provides us with greater health, serenity, and self-knowledge. At once engaging history, moving memoir, and rich scientific analysis, Vital Harmonies tackles some of the most important questions facing humanity today.

Book excerpt: Charlotte Mason looked at the world and saw that it was governed by universal laws, such as the law of gravity. Then she wondered. What if there were similar laws that governed the way people learn? If we knew what those laws were, we'd be able to pursue education along the most promising lines . She devoted her life to finding the key principles of education and then developing methods to make the most of them. The result is a comprehensive picture of living and learning that breathes life into education at every level--from babyhood to the adult years. It's not a rote system, but a flexible set of ideas that keep education in focus. These principles are for everyone concerned with teaching and learning. They are no more difficult to implement than the principle of gravity which allows you to walk, run, and even--when you know what you are doing--to soar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book totally defines your true nature: how to get in touch with it, and be guided in your life through it. Your True Nature is that part of you that is above conditioning, reaction and confusion. It is pure. It is your real potential. To the degree that we can be honest with ourselves, cut the rhetoric and separate our emotions from our truth, is the degree to which we can live authentically and in peace with life. The cost of separating ourselves from nature is being recognised. The human cost of separating people from what is true and natural within them is becoming unquestionable. Our respect for humanity as a global family means we are returning to respect nature. This is inseparable from the quality of the environment we live in, both internal to ourselves and external in the world at large. Knowing yourself, your True Nature, is a great contribution to this quest for a better life and a better world. This work invites you to look beyond the conditioning of your culture, your corporation and your family to find what is REAL within you. It invites you to explore your True Nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated into English for the first time, Foundations of Modern Harmony, by composer and music theorist Karel Janec̆ek, addresses the analysis and composition of music not based on the tonal harmony that was common language until the early 20th century. Discussing this newer music requires a vocabulary in which all combinations of notes, or chords, can be named. Janec̆ek developed his theory of modern harmony over many years. In this book, he classifies chords according to their intervallic structure, their possible arrangements, and then based on their consonance and dissonance. His focus on what we hear leads to a discussion of “imaginary” pitches, those that are still heard after they are no longer sounding. Dealing with such issues as harmonizing a melody, resolving dissonant chords, and the formation and extinction of a sense of the tonic, Janeček’s work is an exciting complement to the theories of Schoenberg and Hindemith. His discussion of harmonic motion leads to the consideration of harmonic function, of establishing the tonic, of modulation, of atonal composition, and of static and kinetic conceptions of harmony. First published in 1965, Janeček’s concerns are of continuing importance to music theorists and composers.

Book excerpt: I had had but a glimpse of the new comer in her flight across the floor; I knew she had scarlet lips and shining eyes; that youth and joy and unimagined beauty had entered with her like a burst of sunlight and flooded the room. I felt, rather than saw, that she had turned from the window and was looking at me, curiously at first, then smiling. Her smile had bewildered me when she opened the door; it was a soft, flashing light that shone from her face and blessed the air. She seemed surrounded by an aureole.

Book excerpt: This is the first complete study of China's most popular eighteenth-century poet in any Western language. The work consists of a detailed biography, a study of Yuan's revolutionary reinterpretation of Chinese literary theory, and an analysis of his many contributions to the more original genres of Qing-dynasty (1644-1911) poetry such as narrative, historical, didactic, eccentric, and nature verse. The study is concluded by a generous and representative sampling of Yuan's poetry in translation, the first to do justice to the wide variety and richness of his oeuvre. Although many shorter poems are selected, this is the first translation to include his outstanding longer poetry. Harmony Garden will completely revise current attitudes in the west concerning classical Chines literature during the eighteenth century, a period that was long viewed as one of decline, but now appears to equal the golden ages of antiquity.
