Book excerpt: The classic story of the relationship between Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson, and a unique portrait of the Bloomsbury Group. 'Vita and Harold have become part of our literature' OBSERVER The marriage of Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson was one of the most controversial relationships of the 20th century. This selection of letters, many of which have never been published, skilfully woven together by their son, Nigel Nicolson, gives dramatic new insight into their fascinating lives. Set within a framework of their son's highly personal memories, the story of this most extraordinary of marriages comes full circle - from the announcement of their engagement in 1912, through the storm days of Vita's well-known affairs with Violet Trefusis and Virginia Woolf, during the years of long separation as Harold's profession as a diplomat took him abroad, and culminating in the days leading up to Vita's death in 1962.
Book Synopsis King Harold II and the Bayeux Tapestry by : Gale R. Owen-Crocker
Download or read book King Harold II and the Bayeux Tapestry written by Gale R. Owen-Crocker and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harold II is chiefly remembered today, perhaps unfairly, for the brevity of his reign and his death at the Battle of Hastings. The papers collected here seek to shed new light on the man and his milieu before and after that climax. They explore the long career and the dynastic network behind Harold Godwinesson's accession on the death of King Edward the Confessor in January 1066, looking in particular at the important questions as to whether Harold's kingship was opportunist or long-planned; a usurpation or a legitimate succession in terms of his Anglo-Scandinavian kinships? They also examine the posthumous legends that Harold survived Hastings and lived on as a religious recluse. The essays in the second part of the volume focus on the Bayeux Tapestry, bringing out the small details which would have resonated significantly for contemporary audiences, both Norman and English, to suggest how they judged Harold and the other players in the succession drama of 1066. Other aspects of the Tapestry are also covered: the possible patron and locations the Tapestry was produced for; where and how it was designed; and the various sources - artistic and real - employed by the artist.
Book Synopsis Portrait of a Marriage by : Nigel Nicolson
Download or read book Portrait of a Marriage written by Nigel Nicolson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1998-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vita Sackville-West, novelist, poet, and biographer, is best known as the friend of Virginia Woolf, who transformed her into an androgynous time-traveler in Orlando. The story of her love affair with Violet Keppel Trefusis in 1920 is one of intrigue and bewilderment. In Portrait of a Marriage, Nigel Nicolson combines his mother's vivid memoir of escapade with what he learned from copious family letters and explains the context of this romantic crisis. He also describes how Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson went on to live the rest of their lives in harmonious marriage.

Book excerpt: Strange markings are found in a twelfth-century wall. A retired stonemason seeks to unravel a hidden message carved in haste by an ancient stonemason who risked his life to leave symbols cut into stone so deep that they would remain silent for nine hundred years, until someone should read these symbols and search for their meaning. Who left these strange symbols? Is it possible that a retired stonemason in this modern world could discover the meaning of symbols left by a fellow mason so long ago? It sounds like a work of fiction, but this is a true story. This is a unique and powerful account of a husband and wife who searched for the truth, found the real story, and revealed the true nature of our last Saxon king, Harold Godwinson. It is the English story, known by a small group of monks, loyal to Harold, and recorded in the 12th century. It was written to refute the false claims of William the Duke, the lying Norman, William the Bastard.

Book Synopsis War and the Cultural Construction of Identities in Britain by :
Download or read book War and the Cultural Construction of Identities in Britain written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British have been involved in numerous wars since the Middle Ages. Many, if not all, of these wars have been re-constructed in historical accounts, in the media and in the arts, and have thus kept the nation's cultural memory of its wars alive. Wars have influenced the cultural construction and reconstruction not only of national identities in Britain; personal, communal, gender and ethnic identities have also been established, shaped, reinterpreted and questioned in times of war and through its representations. Coming from Literary, Film and Cultural Studies, History and Art History, the contributions in this multidisciplinary volume explore how different cultural communities in the British Isles have envisaged war and its significance for various aspects of identity-formation, from the Middle Ages through to the 20th century.
Book Synopsis Cultural Difference and Material Culture in Middle English Romance by : Dominique Battles
Download or read book Cultural Difference and Material Culture in Middle English Romance written by Dominique Battles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the cultural distinctions and conflicts between Anglo-Saxons and Normans originating with the Norman Conquest of 1066 prevailed well into the fourteenth century and are manifest in a significant number of Middle English romances including King Horn, Havelok the Dane, Sir Orfeo, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and others. Specifically, the study looks at how the material culture of these poems (architecture, battle tactic, landscapes) systematically and persistently distinguishes between Norman and Anglo-Saxon cultural identity. Additionally, it examines the influence of the English Outlaw Tradition, itself grounded in Anglo-Saxon resistance to the Norman Conquest, as expressed in specific recurring scenes (disguise and infiltration, forest exile) found in many Middle English romances. In the broadest sense, a significant number of Middle English romances, including some of the most well-read and often-taught, set up a dichotomy of two ruling houses headed by a powerful lord, who compete for power and influence. This book examines the cultural heritage behind each of these pairings to show how poets repeatedly contrast essentially Norman and Anglo-Saxon values and ruling styles.
