Book Synopsis The Minor Latin Works by : John Gower
Download or read book The Minor Latin Works written by John Gower and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gower's achievement in writing substantially in all three primary languages of his time-Anglo-French, English, and Latin-was a source of pride to others and, undoubtedly, to him too: into the final years of his life he continued to produce poetry in all three languages. Certainly there is reason to know these poems for the light they shed on the intense partisanship and events of great moment surrounding the usurpation 1399-1400. It was during these parlous times that Gower composed most of the poems included here. All are important documents historically; but they are also poems admirable equally for their skill and craft. In Praise of Peace is in the same position as the shorter Latin works edited and translated in this volume: ignored, neglected, reduced, or relegated to the dusty realm of footnotes. But there is far more at work in this complex poem, as Gower's verse deftly weaves in and out of the historical, political, social, and religious contexts and controversies of its day. In tone, In Praise of Peace is, if not triumphant, determinedly optimistic. In this light, we might view the poem as a coda to Gower's long career, restating and reinvigorating his famously moral principles about just rule of self and society.

Book Synopsis Communes and Despots in Medieval and Renaissance Italy by : John E. Law
Download or read book Communes and Despots in Medieval and Renaissance Italy written by John E. Law and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on important issues highlighted by the late Philip Jones, this volume explores key aspects of the city state in late-medieval and Renaissance Italy, particularly the nature and quality of different types of government. It focuses on the apparently antithetical but often similar governmental forms represented by the republics and despotisms of the period. Beginning with a reprint of Jones's original 1965 article, the volume then provides twenty new essays that re-examine the issues he raised in light of modern scholarship. Taking a broad chronological and geographic approach, the collection offers a timely re-evaluation of a question of perennial interest to urban and political historians, as well as those with an interest in medieval and Renaissance Italy.
Book Synopsis The Social World of the Florentine Humanists, 1390-1460 by : Lauro Martines
Download or read book The Social World of the Florentine Humanists, 1390-1460 written by Lauro Martines and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lauro Martines' exhaustive search of manuscript material in the state archives of Florence is the basis for a fascinating portrayal of representative humanists of the period. The Social World of the Florentine Humanists explores the wealth, family tradition, civic prominence, and intellectual achievements of these individuals while assessing the attitudes of other Florentines towards them. Martines demonstrates that humanists tended to be wealthy educated men from important families, challenging long-held assumptions about the status of humanisits in that society. First published in 1963, this groundbreaking study provides a detailed picture of the social structure of Florence in the Quattrocento. Martines's work influenced a generation of scholars and illuminated a complex and multifaceted world.
Book Synopsis The Civic World of Early Renaissance Florence by : Gene A. Brucker
Download or read book The Civic World of Early Renaissance Florence written by Gene A. Brucker and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Brucker contends that changes in the social order provide the key to understanding the transition of Florence from a medieval to a Renaissance city. In this book he shows how Florentine politics were transformed from corporate to elitist. He bases his work on a thorough examination of archival material, providing a full socio-political history that extends our knowledge of the Renaissance city-state and its development. The author describes the restructuring of the political system, showing first how the corporate entities that comprised the traditional social order had lost cohesiveness after the Black Death. He traces the process of readjustment that began during the guild regime of 1378-1382, and analyzes the impact of foreign affairs. During the crisis years of the Visconti wars the distinctive features emerged of an elitist regime whose vitality was demonstrated following the death of Giangaleazzo Visconti and whose membership and style the author discusses in detail. Originally published in 1977. Download or read book Power and Imagination written by Lauro Martines and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1988-06-22 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Power and Imagination, a noted historian rethinks the evolution of the city-state in Renaissance Italy and recasts the conventional distinction between "society" and "culture." Martines traces the growth of commerce and the evolution of governments; he describes the attitudes, pleasures, and rituals of the ruling elite; and he seeks to understand the period's towering works of the imagination in literature, painting, city planning, and philosophy-not simply as the creations of individual artists, but as the forman expression of the ambitions and egos of those in power.
