Book Synopsis Realism and Revolution by : Sandy Petrey
Download or read book Realism and Revolution written by Sandy Petrey and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandy Petrey here looks at the emergence of nineteenth-century French realism in the light of the concept of speech acts as defined by J. L. Austin and as exemplified by the history of the French Revolution. Through analysis of the techniques of representation in works by Balzac, Stendhal, and Zola, Petrey suggests that the expression of a truth depends on the same collective forces necessary to change a regime. According to Petrey, political legitimacy in the Revolution, the Empire, and the Restoration was established by means of a series of demonstrations that what words say cannot be interpreted without reference to the community to which they speak. Petrey first discusses the creation of France's National Assembly in 1789 as a foundational example of how speech acts can bring about historical transformation. He then challenges the most powerful twentieth-century assault on realist aesthetics, Roland Barthes's S/Z, and also considers the views of such contemporary critics as Jacques Derrida, Barbara Johnson, and Stanley Fish. During the Revolution, Petrey says, statements of truth were not descriptions of what was, but rather exhortations to produce what was not. Nineteenth-century French fiction represents in literary form a similar collectively authorized linguistic performance; the "real" in realism comes from representing facts not as they are in themselves but as they are produced and rejected in society. In the course of illuminating readings of three central realist works—Balzac's Pere Goriot, Stendhal's The Red and the Black, and Zola's Germinal—Petrey takes the position that the dilemmas of representation, far from being one of realism's blind spots, figure among its major narrative subjects.

Book Synopsis Hermeneutics and Medieval Culture by : Patrick J. Gallacher
Download or read book Hermeneutics and Medieval Culture written by Patrick J. Gallacher and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the art of interpretation in works of history, art, music, and literature from the medieval period. The authors demonstrate that the search for meaning was a primary concern of medieval authors and that the history of medieval thought from Augustine to Aquinas and Ockham illustrates the dialectic of question and answer that is the foundation of hermeneutics. This study is the first to offer a diversity of hermeneutic approaches and themes in the context of medieval works. The study's interdisciplinary approach to the medieval works considered invites analysis from scholars and critics in all areas of medieval studies. The breadth of scope in addressing the art of interpretation in the various disciplines also provides a valuable general introduction to medieval culture.
Book Synopsis The Hidden Reader by : Victor Brombert
Download or read book The Hidden Reader written by Victor Brombert and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victor Brombert is an unrivaled interpreter of French literature; and the writers he considers in this latest book are ones with whom he has a long acqualntance. These essays--eleven of them appearing in English for the first time and some totally new--give us an acute analysis of the major figures of the nineteenth century and a splendid lesson in criticism. Brombert shows how a text works--its structure and narrative devices, and the symbolic function of characters, episodes, words--and he highlights the distinctive postures and styles of each writer. He gives us a sense of the hidden inner text as well as the techniques writers have devised to lead their readers to the discovery of what is hidden. With wonderful subtlety he unravels the reader's participatory response, whether it be Hugo reading Shakespeare, Sartre reading Hugo, Stendhal reading Rousseau, T. S. Eliot misreading Baudelaire, or Baudelaire, Balzac, and Flaubert reading their own sensibilities. This book is a sterling example of the finest kind of literary criticism--wise, intelligent, responsive, sympathetic--that reveals central aspects of the creative process and returns the reader joyfully to the texts themselves.
Book Synopsis Historical Dialectology by : Jacek Fisiak
Download or read book Historical Dialectology written by Jacek Fisiak and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 1988 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains twenty-nine papers. Twenty-five were presented at the International Conference on Historical Dialectology (Regional and Social) held at Blazejewko, Poland (May,1986). Papers deal with various aspects of historical regional dialectology. Some border on the issue of dialectology and linguistic change. Although most deal with English, a number discuss more general issues such as Bartoli's norms, the role of the center and periphery in dialect distribution with reference to the adoption, diffusion and spread of linguistic change, the naturalness problems, the problem of convergence, the use of the computer in historical dialectology.
