However, it is hard for a computer to track a fast moving object under varying illumination and occlusions, in clutter, and with varying appearance in camera projective space due to its relaxed rigidity or change in viewpoint. Since a generic, precise, robust, and fast tracker could trigger many applications, object tracking has been a fundamental problem of practical importance since the beginnings of computer vision. The first contribution of the thesis is a computationally efficient approach to tracking objects of various shapes and motions. It describes a unifying tracking system that can be configured to track the pose of a deformable object in a low or high-dimensional state-space. The object is decomposed into a chained assembly of segments of multiple parts that are arranged under a hierarchy of tailored spatio-temporal constraints. The robustness and generality of the approach is widely demonstrated on tracking various flexible and articulated objects. Haar-like features are widely used in tracking. The second contribution of the thesis is a parser of ensembles of Haar-like features to compute them efficiently. The features are decomposed into simpler kernels, possibly shared by subsets of features, thus forming multi-pass convolutions. Discovering and aligning these kernels within and between passes allows forming recursive trees of kernels that require fewer memory operations than the classic computation, thereby producing the same result but more efficiently. The approach is validated experimentally on popular examples of Haar-like features.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Computer sensing of hand and limb motion is an important problem for applications in human-computer interaction, virtual reality, and athletic performance measurement. We describe a framework for local tracking of self-occluding motion, in which parts of the mechanism obstruct each others visibility to the camera. Our approach uses a kinematic model to predict occlusion and windowed templates to track partially occluded objects. We analyze our model of self-occlusion, discuss the implementation of our algorithm, and give experimental results for 3D hand tracking under significant amounts of self-occlusion. These results extend the DigitEyes system for articulated tracking described in [22,21] to handle self-occluding motions."

Book excerpt: This book presents the state of the art in online visual tracking, including the motivations, practical algorithms, and experimental evaluations. Visual tracking remains a highly active area of research in Computer Vision and the performance under complex scenarios has substantially improved, driven by the high demand in connection with real-world applications and the recent advances in machine learning. A large variety of new algorithms have been proposed in the literature over the last two decades, with mixed success. Chapters 1 to 6 introduce readers to tracking methods based on online learning algorithms, including sparse representation, dictionary learning, hashing codes, local model, and model fusion. In Chapter 7, visual tracking is formulated as a foreground/background segmentation problem, and tracking methods based on superpixels and end-to-end deep networks are presented. In turn, Chapters 8 and 9 introduce the cutting-edge tracking methods based on correlation filter and deep learning. Chapter 10 summarizes the book and points out potential future research directions for visual tracking. The book is self-contained and suited for all researchers, professionals and postgraduate students working in the fields of computer vision, pattern recognition, and machine learning. It will help these readers grasp the insights provided by cutting-edge research, and benefit from the practical techniques available for designing effective visual tracking algorithms. Further, the source codes or results of most algorithms in the book are provided at an accompanying website.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents a thorough investigation of model-free visual object tracking, a fundamental computer vision task that is essential for practical video analytics applications. Given the states of the object in the rst frame, e.g., the position and size of the target, the computational methods developed and advanced in this thesis aim at determining target states in consecutive video frames automatically. In contrast to the tracking schemes that depend strictly on specic object detectors, model-free tracking provides conveniently flexible and competently general solutions where object representations are initiated in the first frame and adapted in an online manner at each frame. We first articulate our motivations and intuitions in Chapter 1, formulate model-free online visual tracking, illustrate outcomes on two representative object tracking applications; drone control and sports video broadcasting analysis, and elaborate other relevant problems. In Chapter 2, we review various tracking methodologies employed by state-ofthe-art trackers and further review related background knowledge, including several important dataset benchmarks and workshop challenges, which are widely used for evaluating the performance of trackers, as well as commonly applied evaluation protocols in this chapter. In Chapter 3 through Chapter 6, we then explore the model-free online visual tracking problem in four different dimensions: 1) learning a more discriminative classier with a two-layer classication hierarchy and background contextual clusters; 2) overcoming the limit of conventionally used local-search scheme with a global object tracking framework based on instance-specic object proposals; 3) tracking object affine motion with a Structured Support Vector Machine (SSVM) framework incorporated with motion manifold structure; 4) an efficient multiple object model-free online tracking approach based on a shared pool of object proposals. Lastly, as a conclusion and future work outlook, we highlight and summarize the contribution of this thesis and discuss several promising research directions in Chapter 7, based on latest work and their drawbacks of current state-of-the-art trackers.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Measurement of human hand and body motion is an important task for applications ranging from athletic performance analysis to advanced user-interfaces. Commercial human motion sensors are invasive, requiring the user to wear gloves or targets. This thesis addresses noninvasive real-time 3D tracking of human motion using sequences of ordinary video images. In contrast to other sensors, video cameras are passive and inobtrusive, and can easily be added to existing work environments. Other computer vision systems have demonstrated real-time tracking of a single rigid object in six degrees-of-freedom (DOFs). Articulated objects like the hand present three challenges to existing rigid-body tracking algorithms: a large number of DOFs (27 for the hand), nonlinear kinematic constraints, and complex self-occlusion effects. This thesis presents a novel tracking framework for articulated objects that uses explicit kinematic models to overcome these obstacles. Kinematic models play two main roles in this work: they provide geometric constraints on image features and predict self-occlusions. A kinematic model for hand tracking gives the 3D positions of the fingers as a function of the hand state, which consists of the pose of the palm and the finger joint angles. Image features for the hand consist of lines and points which are obtained by projecting finger phalanges and tips into the image plane. The kinematic model provides a geometric constraint on the image plane positions of hand features as a function of the hand state. Tracking proceeds by registering the projection of the hand model with measured image features at a high frame rate. Self occlusions are modeled by arranging the image features in overlapping layers, ordered by their visibility to the camera. The layered representation is generated automatically by the kinematic model and used to constrain registration. This framework was implemented in a hand tracking system called DigitEyes and tested in two sets of experiments. First, a hand was tracked in real- time using two cameras and a 27 DOF model, and using a single camera in a 3D mouse user-interface trial. Second, the occlusion handling framework was tested off-line on a motion sequence with significant self-occlusion. These results illustrate the effectiveness of explicit kinematic models in 3D tracking and analysis of self-occluding motion."
