This book was released on 1999-06-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses some of the most fundamental questions that can be asked about target language (TL) acquisition in the classroom context, namely 1. What is negotiated interaction? 2. What are the main discourse functions of negotiated interaction? 3. How frequent is negotiated interaction in TL classrooms, and does this frequency vary by proficiency level? 4. To what extent does the initiation of negotiation overlap with the negotiation of power in such a setting of unequal-power discourse as the TL classroom? The negotiation process allows TL learners to obtain ‘comprehensible input’, to receive ‘negative input’, and to produce ‘comprehensible output’. Since these are key variables in the acquisition process, by researching the negotiation work occurring in TL classroom discourse, the book fully contributes to the understanding of the process of interlanguage development in TL classrooms and thereby has major implications for TL teaching and teacher training. The book also contributes to further the understanding of negotiated interaction from a sociolinguistic standpoint: the asymmetrical nature of negotiation work in TL classrooms reflects the role and power relationships, the social organization, as well as the tacit interactional and cultural rules that seem to be at work in the TL classroom context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language use and communication are pervasively and even intrinsically flawed, partial and problematic - this is the contention of this volume, which explores failures in interpersonal communication. Rather than approaching communication in terms of competence, effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction, the contributors reassess key social contexts in terms of miscommunication rather than communication, failure rather than success. They provide an integrative overview of research in defined social contexts, highlighting particular social groups, social situations and communicative modes. The elderly, children, non-native speakers, medical personnel and the disabled are among those discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now an acknowledged fact in the world of linguistics that the concept of evaluation is crucial, and that there is very little – if any – discourse that cannot be analyzed through the prism of its evaluative content. This book presents some of the latest developments in the study of this phenomenon. Released more than a decade later than Hunston and Thompson’s (2000) Evaluation in Text, Evaluation in Context is designed as its sequel, in an attempt to continue, update and extend the different avenues of research opened by the earlier work. Both theoretical and empirical studies on the topic are presented, with the intention of scrutinizing as many of its dimensions as possible, by not only looking at evaluative texts, but also considering the aspects of the discursive context that affect the final evaluative meaning at both the production and reception stages of the evaluative act. The editors’ main objective has been to gather contributions which investigate the manifold faces and phases of evaluation by presenting a wide variety of perspectives that include different linguistic theories (e.g. Axiological Semantics, Functionalism or Politeness Theory), different levels of linguistic description (e.g. phonological, lexical or semantic), and different text types and contexts (e.g. the evaluation found in ironic discourse, the multimodality of media discourse or the world of politics, just to name a few). The volume can be of use not only for scholars who study the evaluative function of language, but also for students who wish to pursue research in the area.
