Book excerpt: Two organizational meetings were held during the month of October and a data gathering and decision-making session was held in late November and early December. Between October 14 and October 20, J.R. Allan and A. Nigrini visited the Michigan Technological University (MTU) campus to meet the faculty and students who are involved in the project and to discuss project goals, facilities, and lines of communication. On October 27, the first formal meeting and planning session for project members was held in Bakersfield, CA. J.R. Wood, C.A. Salotti, J.R. Allan, and A. Nigrini, and graduate student C. McKissock represented MTU, while W.R. Berry and D.M. Olson represented Digital Petrophysics Inc. (DPI). The purpose of the meeting was to assemble the project team, review the Statement of Work, and assure that all project members were aware of their responsibilities. During the week of November 29 to December 3, A. Nigrini, J.R. Allan, and J.R. Wood met the DPI offices to organize and collect data and to coordinate the next several months efforts with Berry and Olson. The technical progress for the quarter is summarized below by Task and Subtask.

Book excerpt: The Multimedia Database Management System (MDMS) has been developed in the commercial software package Toolbook. Design and implementation, which was carried out by C. Asiala, is now essentially complete. Regional location maps of southern San Joaquin Valley oil fields, structure contour maps of the Pioneer area, core photos, core data, thin-section and SEM photomicrographs of core materials, structural cross sections through Pioneer Anticline, an atlas of photomicrographs; illustrating typical diagenetic features observed in San Joaquin Valley petroleum reservoirs, elemental and spectral data collected on Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) standards, and all quarterly and annual reports submitted to DOE for this project were scanned into the MDMS. All data and information are accessible through dropdown menus and hotlinks in a Table of Contents. A tutorial is presented up front to guide users through the MDMS and instruct them on the various ways in which data can be viewed and retrieved. Version 1.0 of the MDMS was written to CD ROM and distributed to participants in a Technology Transfer Workshop in Bakersfield, CA, in September, 1996. Version 1.1, which contains additional information and has been reorganized for easier use, is nearing completion. All measured and computed log curves (computed curves represent parameters such as porosity, water saturation, and clay content, which were calculated from the measured log traces using specially developed algorithms) for the 45+ project wells on Pioneer Anticline are now in the MDMS in LAS (log ASCII) format, and can be exported to any commercial log evaluation program for manipulation and analysis. All log curves were written to the CD ROM in digital format.

Book excerpt: Wireline logs from most of the 45 wells that penetrate the Miocene within the study area on the Pioneer Anticline were digitized by DPI, Data preparation and log calibration were completed on six wells and model selection and analysis were performed on the one cored well, Tenneco 62X-30, in Pioneer Field. The 59 samples collected from the McKittrick Front wells in Cymric Field were forwarded to MTU where graduate students R. Kramer and D. Popko began Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses. After reviewing PC-based software from most major vendors, a consensus began to emerge that the best approach would be to link the best modules from three different systems, a wireline log analysis program, a mapping program, and a 2D and 3D visualization program, into a flexible, user-friendly unit. This would result in a product that could be used by small gas and oil companies to accomplish similar analyses. Finally, a multimedia shell was constructed using Macromind Director to display project results at the AAPG exhibit in Denver. This computer-visualization technical innovation, although not a principal component of the original proposal, elicited a great amount of interest from visitors to the booth.

The approach will utilize readily available, affordable computer software and analytical services. This study will illustrate the steps involved in (1) integration of data typically available for gas and oil fields with predictive models for reservoir alteration and (2) linking these data and models with modem computer software to provide 2- and 3-D visualizations of reservoir geometry, facies and subsurface, stratigraphy, original oil in place, present (estimated) oil in place, and measured and model parameters. The Michigan Technological University (MTU) group continued work on sample measurement and prepared for technology transfer of results at the June AAPG meeting in Denver D. Schueler is developing a program to store and display the results of our project in an interactive format using the MacroMind Director multimedia program. All project data, results and reports will be integrated in this medium and the final product will be a CD ROM which can be distributed to interested parties as part of our technology transfer effort. X-ray Diffraction (XRD: R. Kramer) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR: N. Popko) analysis of samples from one of the Pioneer wells have begun and spreadsheets and graphics to record and display the results have been developed.

The producibility problems are permeability variation and poor sweep efficiency. Phase 1 of the project focuses on the development of computer-generated geological and reservoir simulation models that will be used to select sites for the demonstration and implementation of CO2 displacement programs in Phase 2. Included in Phase 1 is the site selection and drilling of an infill well, coring of the Cypress interval, and injectivity testing to gather information used to update the reservoir simulation model. Phase 2 involves field implementation of WAG. Technology Transfer includes outreach activity such as seminars, workshops, and field trips. Technical progress for this quarter is described.

Under project 2, a visual high-pressure core-holder has been designed and constructed to be used in critical gas saturation and some other measurements. The apparatus has been used to measure critical gas saturation for a low viscosity mixture. These measurements reconfirm the investigators' previously published data that critical gas saturation for low viscosity fluids are low-around 1 percent. The apparatus is being currently used to measure critical gas saturation of an 11 API oil. Unlike light oils, heavy oil reservoirs, especially fractured heavy oil reservoirs might have an extremely high recovery efficiency with solution gas-drive. The critical gas saturation is an important element of recovery efficiency for such reservoirs.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this research program are to develop microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) systems for application to reservoirs containing medium to heavy oils and to evaluate reservoir wettability and its effects on oil recovery. The MEOR research goals include: (a) development of bacterial cultures that are effective for oil displacement under a broad range of reservoir conditions, (b) improved understanding of the mechanisms by which microbial systems displace oil under reservoir conditions, (c) determination of the feasibility of combining microbial systems with or following conventional enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes, (d) development and implementation of industry cost-shared field demonstration projects for MEOR technology. The goals of the reservoir wettability project are to develop: (a) better methods for assessment of reservoir core wettability, (b) more certainty in relating laboratory core analysis procedures to field conditions, (c) a better understanding of the effects of reservoir matrix properties and heterogeneity on wettability, and (d) improved ability to predict and influence waterflood and EOR response through control of wettability in reservoirs. Accomplishments for this quarter are presented for; MEOR research and field application; and reservoir wettability and its effect on oil recovery.
