Book excerpt: The Whitsundays has a long and rich cultural heritage, beginning with the ancient Ngaro indigenous people who have lived in the Whitsundays region for over 8,000 years. The original inhabitants of the Whitsundays, the Ngaro moved seasonally throughout the islands in search of food and had no permanent settlements. The Ngaro were keen fisherpeople, making the most of the abundance of fish and other marine animals around the islands. They used spears and fashioned simple bark canoes 2-3 metres long, often made from a single piece of bark. To truly experience this ancient tradition and view some of the cultural remains including rock art, visitors can hike to the Ngaro Cultural Site at Nara Inlet on Hook Island. Another site of significance to the Ngaro is Hill Inlet on Whitsunday Island, and to this day the upper reaches of the inlet are considered a sacred site and a permit is required for access

Book excerpt: Australia's Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven natural wonders of the world and is often showcased in magazines like National Geographic and Travel and Leisure. One of the world's best and most accessible coral reefs, the Great Barrier Reef is also the only natural structure on earth that is visible from outer space. Located off the coast of Queensland, it has 2,900 individual coral reefs and over 900 islands covering 2,600 sq. km, making it the planet's largest UNESCO World Heritage site. Cairns is located close to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. It is the gateway to the region and attracts snorkelers, scuba divers, cruise ship visitors, and fishing enthusiasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Visitor Encounters with the Great Barrier Reef explores how visitor encounters have shaped the history and heritage of the reef. Moving beyond the visual aesthetic significance, the book highlights the importance of multi-sensual experiences in understanding the region as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Drawing on archival and ethnographic research, the book describes how visitors have experienced the Great Barrier Reef through personal embodied encounters and the mechanisms they have used to understand, access and share these experiences with others. Illustrating how such experiences contribute to a knowledge of place, Pocock also explores the vital role of reproduction and photography in sharing experiences with those who have never been there. The second part of the book analyses visitor experiences and demonstrates how they underpin three key frames through which the Reef is understood and valued: the islands as paradise, the underwater coral gardens, and the singular Great Barrier Reef. Acknowledging that these constructs are increasingly removed from human experience, Pocock nevertheless demonstrates that they are integral to recognition of the region as a World Heritage Site. Demonstrating how experiences of the Reef have changed over time, Visitor Encounters with the Great Barrier Reef should be of interest to academics and students working in the fields of heritage studies, history and tourism. It should also be of interest to heritage practitioners working around the globe"--

The Whitsundays are part of the Cumberland Group that form the largest group of Coastal Islands on the Australian Coast. In total there are 74 islands located right in the centre of the Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The Whitsunday group consists of 22 islands, that were named by Captain Cook on his voyage on the Endeavour in 1770. The islands became islands around 10,000 years ago when the Ice Caps melted and the sea level rose around 100 metres. The islands are actually mountain tops cut-off from the mainland by the ocean. Today the islands remain relatively unspoilt, with only eight of the islands having resort style development. The island resorts include Daydream, Hayman, Hamilton, South Molle, Long & Hook. The largest Island, Whitsunday Island only has a viewing platform, signage and a toilet. The Whitsundays provide terrific sailing conditions, with consistent South Easterly breezes and many calm water anchorages nestled among the islands, making overnight stopovers comfortable.
