Book excerpt: A charming tale about friends finding joy and wonder in nature when they are caught in a thunderstorm on their way to their fort. It’s spring! Warm and green, the great outdoors beckons, especially when you’ve built a fort to play in with your friends. Our Fort is the story of three friends who set out one day to visit their secret fort at the edge of the woods. The weather looks fine, but no sooner have they left home and walked into the hills than the sun disappears behind the clouds. Crows fly by, calling, and the wind begins to blow. Suddenly the day turns into night. It’s a storm! Will the friends make it to shelter? Will their fort survive the storm? Marie Dorléans’s illustrations capture the sensory pleasures of nature, as well as its capriciousness, while her story reminds us of the simple joy of being with friends and sharing a great adventure.

Book excerpt: Pricketts Fort was built on the land of Jacob Prickett in 1774, during what is known as Lord Dunmore's War. It provided sanctuary for local settlers before and during the American Revolution and was a safe haven from the attacks of American Indians until the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794. Constructed by local militia on a small rise near the confluence of Pricketts Creek and the Monongahela River, Pricketts Fort provided refuge for approximately 80 families. The fort itself was large by 18th-century standards. It had blockhouses at each corner, with walls 12 feet high and 110 feet long. Although the fort was never attacked, many outlying homes were, and a number of settlers lost their lives. Today, Pricketts Fort hosts visitors looking to learn more about day-to-day life on the western Virginian frontier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonel Moses Hazen’s 2nd Canadian Regiment was one of the first “national” regiments in the American army. Created by the Continental Congress, it drew members from Canada, eleven states, and foreign forces. “Congress’s Own” was among the most culturally, ethnically, and regionally diverse of the Continental Army’s regiments—a distinction that makes it an apt reflection of the union that was struggling to create a nation. The 2nd Canadian, like the larger army, represented and pushed the transition from a colonial, continental alliance to a national association. The problems the regiment raised and encountered underscored the complications of managing a confederation of states and troops. In this enterprising study of an intriguing and at times “infernal” regiment, Holly A. Mayer marshals personal and official accounts—from the letters and journals of Continentals and congressmen to the pension applications of veterans and their widows—to reveal what the personal passions, hardships, and accommodations of the 2nd Canadian can tell us about the greater military and civil dynamics of the American Revolution. Congress’s Own follows congressmen, commanders, and soldiers through the Revolutionary War as the regiment’s story shifts from tents and trenches to the halls of power and back. Interweaving insights from borderlands and community studies with military history, Mayer tracks key battles and traces debates that raged within the Revolution’s military and political borderlands wherein subjects became rebels, soldiers, and citizens. Her book offers fresh, vivid accounts of the Revolution that disclose how “Congress’s Own” regiment embodied the dreams, diversity, and divisions within and between the Continental Army, Congress, and the emergent union of states during the War for American Independence.

Book excerpt: For Laramie was one of the most important frontier outposts of the American West. Founded as the trading post Fort William in 1834, the fort became a U.S. military post in 1849. Beginning in 1841, emigrants stopped at Fort Laramie while traveling the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails. Fort Laramie served as gathering place for thousands of Native Americans and hosted the 1851 and 1868 treaty councils. When the treaties failed, the post became the staging area for campaigns that eventually led to the tribes's confinement on reservations. Fort Laramie was abandoned by the military in 1890; the buildings were auctioned and served private interests during the homestead period from 1890 to 1937. Fort Laramie was acquired by the state of Wyoming in 1937, and the fort became a unit of the National Park System in 1938. Fort Laramie National Historic Site is open daily except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The restoration of many structures to their historical appearance provides visitors with a glimpse of the past. Starley Talbott is a Wyoming native, freelance writer, and former newspaper reporter. This is her second book in the Images of America series. Photographs in this book are from the Fort Laramie National Historic Site, state and national archives, and the author. The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today. Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of local heritage, making history available to all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year visitors flock to Maine’s Fort Knox near the mouth of the Penobscot River. They are drawn by the thousands for its glimpse into Maine’s military past, but also for it's haunted aspects. The fort was catapulted to national attention when the prime-time TV show Ghost Hunters filmed an episode there. Since no shots were ever fired from the fort, who might the ghost or ghosts be? Now, Gardner Walsh delves into the creepy nature of the fort to find the answer. She explores the history of the fort and some of the Indian legends of the area from before the fort was built; provides interviews of staff and eye-witness accounts of ghost sightings at the fort; and she offers a fun look at how the fort makes the most of its attention by hosting its annual Fright at the Fort—called the "best Halloween experience in Maine”—and the summer Paranormal Faire. Woven throughout, Walsh recounts her own haunted adventure when she spent a night locked in the fort with the East Coast Ghost Trackers.

Book excerpt: "Historian Thomas Reid chronicles the threats and challenges Fort Jefferson's troops faced, which were unlike any faced by soldiers serving elsewhere during the Civil War. Tales of epidemic disease, hurricanes, shipwrecks, prisoner escapes, and Confederate attack stand in stark contrast to "the beauty of the sunsets and the surrounding panorama of nature." Reid offers keen insight into white northerners' perceptions of slaves, slavery, and the emerging free black soldiers of the latter years of the war. He also draws on the writings of Emily Holder, wife of Fort Jefferson's resident surgeon, to offer the first female perspective on life at the fort."--BOOK JACKET.
