Au Canada, afin d'atteindre leurs importants objectifs de conservation, les gouvernements doivent collaborer avec les communautés locales et autochtones. Nous avons tenté, dans cette étude, de comprendre comment une communauté autochtone s'est approprié le concept d'aire protégée. Par l'étude du cas de la réserve de biodiversité Akumunan, nous avons voulu savoir : (1) quels moyens ont été utilisés par la communauté d'Essipit pour contribuer à la mise en œuvre de la réserve de biodiversité Akumunan (2) quelle vision mène le projet d'Essipit et (3) quel rôle souhaite avoir Essipit dans la gouvernance d'Akumunan? Pour répondre à ces questions, nous avons mené une recherche documentaire et avons réalisé six groupes de discussion pendant lesquels 22 membres d'Essipit ont été rencontrés. Cette étude montre qu'historiquement, la mise en place des premiers parcs a mené à la dépossession de plusieurs peuples autochtones de leurs terres ancestrales. Cependant, ceux-ci s'approprient maintenant le concept des aires protégées afin de protéger leur patrimoine naturel et culturel. Le cas de la Première Nation des Innus Essipit montre que la communauté a une vision holistique de la nature : « tout » doit être protégé afin d'assurer une pérennité des ressources naturelles, ce qui permet la pratique des activités traditionnelles, qui constituent les fondements de la culture innue. La communauté souhaite jouer un rôle de premier plan dans la gouvernance de l'aire protégée. Peu de littérature a été recensée sur la vision et les démarches menées par les communautés autochtones québécoises en lien avec la mise en place d'une aire protégée. Cette étude pourra inspirer et favoriser la réussite d'autres projets de conservation autochtones en plus d'éclairer les gouvernements qui désirent reconnaître un statut d'aire protégée autochtone en s'inspirant d'un modèle proposé par une communauté.
