Book excerpt: In early medieval Europe, dreams and visions were believed to reveal divine information about Christian life and the hereafter. No consensus existed, however, as to whether all Christians, or only a spiritual elite, were entitled to have a relationship of this sort with the supernatural. Drawing on a rich variety of sources—histories, hagiographies, ascetic literature, and records of dreams at saints' shrines—Isabel Moreira provides insight into a society struggling to understand and negotiate its religious visions. Moreira analyzes changing attitudes toward dreams and visionary experiences beginning in late antiquity, when the church hierarchy considered lay dreamers a threat to its claims of spiritual authority. Moreira describes how, over the course of the Merovingian period, the clergy came to accept the visions of ordinary folk—peasants, women, and children—as authentic. Dream literature and accounts of visionary experiences infiltrated all aspects of medieval culture by the eighth century, and the dreams of ordinary Christians became central to the clergy's pastoral concerns. Written in clear and inviting prose, this book enables readers to understand how the clerics of Merovingian Gaul allowed a Christian culture of dreaming to develop and flourish without compromising the religious orthodoxy of the community or the primacy of their own authority.

Book excerpt: Change does not come to earth just because we believe - we must be willing to lead. Everything on the earth hinges on leadership. We are learning to live and lead from the throne of David-the heart and authority of God. The purpose of this book is to advance healthy leadership by understanding its value and purpose. Whatever we do not value we will discard or misuse. Without leadership, great visions will never survive. Everyone who leads serves others, and everyone who serves is leading someone. Our lives were created to bring advancement to what already exists as well as pursuing that which has never been accomplished. David's anointed worship as a shepherd boy did not change Israel until he became king. When we lead, who we are shifts the world or someone's world. We must rule to bring change. Greater assignments are given when we address our current challenges. As long as we are alive-never stop leading, never stop dreaming and never stop loving-it's God's adventure for our life. Our leadership is accelerated when we are seated in heavenly places in Christ Jesus and ruling from the throne of David in the earth. - Dr. Bill Hamon Intimacy with Father God is the key that will allow you to position yourself to operate out of the throne of David for His glory. - Rich Marshall GOD@WORK This revelation concerning leadership and authority will change how the Church does business. - Bishop Anne Gimenez In "The Throne of David," you will see yourself like never before. - Bishop Tommy Reid This is truly one of the best books I've ever read! - Dr. Rocky Tannehill, Entrepreneur

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power can be either constructive or destructive. Many have habits, lifestyles, and toxic relationships that have and do prove themselves destructive. People also have many habits, lifestyles, and healthy relationships that have and do prove themselves constructive. Ideally, what we want is to remove all the destructive powers in our lives and incorporate the constructive powers. The Power of a Vision is about a necessary constructive power that we all need. 2 Peter 1:9, referring to people who are not doing the hard work it takes to grow in the Lord, says this creates a sight problem. But the sight problem is specific; it's not a problem with seeing things that are before you, but it says that these people are "blind and cannot see far off." We'll have much to say about this passage in 2 Peter 1 within these pages, but for now, consider the specific sight issue created. Furthermore, consider the problems this sight issue will create. We serve a god of revelation. God desires to remove the veil and reveal. If something is hidden, its existence can be questioned; but if it's revealed, one cannot deny its existence. What a constructive power to see what God has planned, to be fully persuaded by what you see. What you see influences your daily decisions. What you see influences the directions your lives go. It is the nature of any journey that if you travel the right direction, with enough miles, you will arrive at your desired destination. How many are miles and miles away from God's perfect plan, all because they have no vision? Hellen Keller, when asked about her blindness, said, "Worse than not having sight is to have sight but no vision."

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Never Eat Alone redefines collaboration with a radical new workplace operating system in which leadership no longer demands an office, an official title, or even a physical workplace. “An actionable methodology for any team to thrive during the decade of exponential change ahead.”—Peter H. Diamandis, founder of XPRIZE and Singularity University, bestselling co-author of Abundance, Bold, and The Future Is Faster Than You Think In times of stress, we have a choice: we can retreat further into our isolated silos, or we can commit to “going higher together.” When external pressures are mounting, and employees are working from far-flung locations across the globe, says bestselling author Keith Ferrazzi, we can no longer afford to waste time navigating the complex chains of command or bureaucratic bottlenecks present in most companies. But when we choose the bold new methodology of co-elevation as our operating model, we unlock the potential to boost productivity, deepen commitment and engagement, and create a level of trust, mutual accountability, and purpose that exceeds what could have been accomplished under the status quo. And you don’t need any formal authority to do it. You simply have to marshal a commitment to a shared mission and care about the success and development of others as much as you care about your own. Regardless of your title, position, or where or how you work, the ability to lead without authority is an essential workplace competency. Here, Ferrazzi draws on over a decade of research and over thirty years helping CEOs and senior leaders drive innovation and build high-performing teams to show how we can all turn our colleagues and partners into teammates and truly reboot the way we work together.

Book excerpt: Visions of the City is a dramatic history of utopian urbanism in the twentieth century. It explores radical demands for new spaces and ways of living, and considers their effects on planning, architecture and struggles to shape urban landscapes. The author critically examines influential utopian approaches to urbanism in western Europe associated with such figures as Ebenezer Howard and Le Corbusier, uncovering the political interests, desires and anxieties that lay behind their ideal cities. He also investigates avant-garde perspectives from the time that challenged these conceptions of cities, especially from within surrealism. At the heart of this richly illustrated book is an encounter with the explosive ideas of the situationists. Tracing the subversive practices of this avant-garde group and its associates from their explorations of Paris during the 1950s to their alternative visions based on nomadic life and play, David Pinder convincingly explains the significance of their revolutionary attempts to transform urban spaces and everyday life. He addresses in particular Constant's New Babylon, finding within his proposals a still powerful provocation to imagine cities otherwise. The book not only recovers vital moments from past hopes and dreams of modern urbanism. It also contests current claims about the 'end of utopia', arguing that reconsidering earlier projects can play a critical role in developing utopian perspectives today. Through the study of utopian visions, it aims to rekindle elements of utopianism itself. A superb critical exploration of the underside of utopian thought over the last hundred years and its continuing relevance in the here and now for thinking about possible urban worlds. The treatment of the Situationists and their milieu is a revelation. David Harvey, Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, City University of New York Graduate School
