Book excerpt: Intrinsically noncommutative spaces today are considered from the perspective of several branches of modern physics, including quantum gravity, string theory, and statistical physics. From this point of view, it is ideal to devise a concept of space and its geometry that is fundamentally noncommutative. Providing a clear introduction to noncommutat
Book Synopsis A Functorial Model Theory by : Cyrus F. Nourani
Download or read book A Functorial Model Theory written by Cyrus F. Nourani and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to a functorial model theory based on infinitary language categories. The author introduces the properties and foundation of these categories before developing a model theory for functors starting with a countable fragment of an infinitary language. He also presents a new technique for generating generic models with categories by inventing infinite language categories and functorial model theory. In addition, the book covers string models, limit models, and functorial models.
Book Synopsis Virtual Fundamental Cycles in Symplectic Topology by : John W. Morgan
Download or read book Virtual Fundamental Cycles in Symplectic Topology written by John W. Morgan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-04-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of using the moduli space of pseudo-holomorphic curves on a symplectic manifold was introduced by Mikhail Gromov in 1985. From the appearance of Gromov's original paper until today this approach has been the most important tool in global symplectic geometry. To produce numerical invariants of these manifolds using this method requires constructing a fundamental cycle associated with moduli spaces. This volume brings together three approaches to constructing the “virtual” fundamental cycle for the moduli space of pseudo-holomorphic curves. All approaches are based on the idea of local Kuranishi charts for the moduli space. Workers in the field will get a comprehensive understanding of the details of these constructions and the assumptions under which they can be made. These techniques and results will be essential in further applications of this approach to producing invariants of symplectic manifolds.

Book Synopsis Visual Geometry and Topology by : Anatolij T. Fomenko
Download or read book Visual Geometry and Topology written by Anatolij T. Fomenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometry and topology are strongly motivated by the visualization of ideal objects that have certain special characteristics. A clear formulation of a specific property or a logically consistent proof of a theorem often comes only after the mathematician has correctly "seen" what is going on. These pictures which are meant to serve as signposts leading to mathematical understanding, frequently also contain a beauty of their own. The principal aim of this book is to narrate, in an accessible and fairly visual language, about some classical and modern achievements of geometry and topology in both intrinsic mathematical problems and applications to mathematical physics. The book starts from classical notions of topology and ends with remarkable new results in Hamiltonian geometry. Fomenko lays special emphasis upon visual explanations of the problems and results and downplays the abstract logical aspects of calculations. As an example, readers can very quickly penetrate into the new theory of topological descriptions of integrable Hamiltonian differential equations. The book includes numerous graphical sheets drawn by the author, which are presented in special sections of "Visual material". These pictures illustrate the mathematical ideas and results contained in the book. Using these pictures, the reader can understand many modern mathematical ideas and methods. Although "Visual Geometry and Topology" is about mathematics, Fomenko has written and illustrated this book so that students and researchers from all the natural sciences and also artists and art students will find something of interest within its pages.
Book Synopsis Quantum International Relations by : James Der Derian
Download or read book Quantum International Relations written by James Der Derian and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this volume are motivated by a common apprehension and a common hope. The apprehension was first voiced by Einstein, who lamented the inability of humanity, at the individual and social level, to keep up with the increased speed of technological change brought about by the quantum revolution. As quantum science and technology fast forward into the 21st century, the social sciences remain stuck in classical, 19th century ways of thinking. Can such a mechanistic model of the mind and society possibly help us manage the fully realized technological potential of the quantum? That's where the hope appears: that perhaps quantum is not just a physical science, but a human science too. In Quantum International Relations, James Der Derian and Alexander Wendt gather rising scholars and leading experts to make the case for quantum approaches to world politics. As a fundamental theory of reality and enabler of new technologies, quantum now touches everything, with the potential to revolutionize how we conduct diplomacy, wage war, and make wealth. Contributors present the core principles of quantum mechanics--entanglement, uncertainty, superposition, and the wave function--as significant catalysts and superior heuristics for an accelerating quantum future. Facing a reality which no longer corresponds to an outdated Newtonian worldview of states as billiard balls, individuals as rational actors or power as objective interest, Der Derian and Wendt issue an urgent call for a new human science of quantum International Relations. At the centenary of the first quantum thought experiment in the 1920s, this book offers a diversity of explorations, speculations and approaches for understanding geopolitics in the 21st century.

Book Synopsis Virtual Topology Construction and Application by : Alla Sheffer
Download or read book Virtual Topology Construction and Application written by Alla Sheffer and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "A new enhanced B-Rep for solids is introduced, using the concept of virtual topology in which the geometric and topological entity definitions as defined in the standard B-Rep are uncoupled, thus allowing topological entities not corresponding to geometric ones. The need for such enhancement is explained as well as the construction process starting with an object described as a standard B-Rep and resulting in the desired modified topology, suitable for the user needs. When using the solid for various applications, the B-Rep must be edited to suit the application. For instance, when meshing a solid for use in analysis many small features may need to be eliminted [sic]. The solid may also need to be dissected or decomposed into 'meshable' pieces. The introduced modified B-Rep, allows these changes to be applied to the topology only, without changing the underlying geometry, thus making the process much simpler and allowing greater editting [sic] flexibility."
Book Synopsis From Differential Geometry to Non-commutative Geometry and Topology by : Neculai S. Teleman
Download or read book From Differential Geometry to Non-commutative Geometry and Topology written by Neculai S. Teleman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-10 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide a friendly introduction to non-commutative geometry. It studies index theory from a classical differential geometry perspective up to the point where classical differential geometry methods become insufficient. It then presents non-commutative geometry as a natural continuation of classical differential geometry. It thereby aims to provide a natural link between classical differential geometry and non-commutative geometry. The book shows that the index formula is a topological statement, and ends with non-commutative topology.
Book Synopsis Lecture Notes in Algebraic Topology by : James Frederic Davis
Download or read book Lecture Notes in Algebraic Topology written by James Frederic Davis and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of algebraic topology a graduate student specializing in topology must learn can be intimidating. Moreover, by their second year of graduate studies, students must make the transition from understanding simple proofs line-by-line to understanding the overall structure of proofs of difficult theorems. To help students make this transition, the material in this book is presented in an increasingly sophisticated manner. It is intended to bridge the gap between algebraic andgeometric topology, both by providing the algebraic tools that a geometric topologist needs and by concentrating on those areas of algebraic topology that are geometrically motivated. Prerequisites for using this book include basic set-theoretic topology, the definition of CW-complexes, someknowledge of the fundamental group/covering space theory, and the construction of singular homology. Most of this material is briefly reviewed at the beginning of the book. The topics discussed by the authors include typical material for first- and second-year graduate courses. The core of the exposition consists of chapters on homotopy groups and on spectral sequences. There is also material that would interest students of geometric topology (homology with local coefficients and obstructiontheory) and algebraic topology (spectra and generalized homology), as well as preparation for more advanced topics such as algebraic $K$-theory and the s-cobordism theorem. A unique feature of the book is the inclusion, at the end of each chapter, of several projects that require students to presentproofs of substantial theorems and to write notes accompanying their explanations. Working on these projects allows students to grapple with the ``big picture'', teaches them how to give mathematical lectures, and prepares them for participating in research seminars. The book is designed as a textbook for graduate students studying algebraic and geometric topology and homotopy theory. It will also be useful for students from other fields such as differential geometry, algebraic geometry, andhomological algebra. The exposition in the text is clear; special cases are presented over complex general statements.
Book Synopsis Geometry, Topology and Physics by : Mikio Nakahara
Download or read book Geometry, Topology and Physics written by Mikio Nakahara and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential geometry and topology have become essential tools for many theoretical physicists. In particular, they are indispensable in theoretical studies of condensed matter physics, gravity, and particle physics. Geometry, Topology and Physics, Second Edition introduces the ideas and techniques of differential geometry and topology at a level suitable for postgraduate students and researchers in these fields. The second edition of this popular and established text incorporates a number of changes designed to meet the needs of the reader and reflect the development of the subject. The book features a considerably expanded first chapter, reviewing aspects of path integral quantization and gauge theories. Chapter 2 introduces the mathematical concepts of maps, vector spaces, and topology. The following chapters focus on more elaborate concepts in geometry and topology and discuss the application of these concepts to liquid crystals, superfluid helium, general relativity, and bosonic string theory. Later chapters unify geometry and topology, exploring fiber bundles, characteristic classes, and index theorems. New to this second edition is the proof of the index theorem in terms of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The final two chapters are devoted to the most fascinating applications of geometry and topology in contemporary physics, namely the study of anomalies in gauge field theories and the analysis of Polakov's bosonic string theory from the geometrical point of view. Geometry, Topology and Physics, Second Edition is an ideal introduction to differential geometry and topology for postgraduate students and researchers in theoretical and mathematical physics.
Book Synopsis Geometry and Topology of Manifolds: Surfaces and Beyond by : Vicente Muñoz
Download or read book Geometry and Topology of Manifolds: Surfaces and Beyond written by Vicente Muñoz and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a novel approach to differential topology. Its main focus is to give a comprehensive introduction to the classification of manifolds, with special attention paid to the case of surfaces, for which the book provides a complete classification from many points of view: topological, smooth, constant curvature, complex, and conformal. Each chapter briefly revisits basic results usually known to graduate students from an alternative perspective, focusing on surfaces. We provide full proofs of some remarkable results that sometimes are missed in basic courses (e.g., the construction of triangulations on surfaces, the classification of surfaces, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, the degree-genus formula for complex plane curves, the existence of constant curvature metrics on conformal surfaces), and we give hints to questions about higher dimensional manifolds. Many examples and remarks are scattered through the book. Each chapter ends with an exhaustive collection of problems and a list of topics for further study. The book is primarily addressed to graduate students who did take standard introductory courses on algebraic topology, differential and Riemannian geometry, or algebraic geometry, but have not seen their deep interconnections, which permeate a modern approach to geometry and topology of manifolds.
Book Synopsis Topology, Geometry and Quantum Field Theory by : Ulrike Luise Tillmann
Download or read book Topology, Geometry and Quantum Field Theory written by Ulrike Luise Tillmann and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-06-28 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium held in honour of the 60th birthday of Graeme Segal brought together leading physicists and mathematicians. Its topics were centred around string theory, M-theory, and quantum gravity on the one hand, and K-theory, elliptic cohomology, quantum cohomology and string topology on the other. Geometry and quantum physics developed in parallel since the recognition of the central role of non-abelian gauge theory in elementary particle physics in the late seventies and the emerging study of super-symmetry and string theory. With its selection of survey and research articles these proceedings fulfil the dual role of reporting on developments in the field and defining directions for future research. For the first time Graeme Segal's manuscript 'The definition of Conformal Field Theory' is published, which has been greatly influential over more than ten years. An introduction by the author puts it into the present context.
