Book excerpt: Two issues represented the essence of this study: online education and high school graduation. A high school diploma is the gateway to future achievements in education and careers and can influence students' self-esteem and relationships. However, research has shown that dropping out of high school can lead to unemployment, welfare, prison, and poor health, not to mention low self-esteem and a sense of failure. Initially, online courses for high school students supplemented courses not available in local institutions. However, over the last decade virtual schools have developed ways to meet the individual needs of all students, particularly those at risk. A quantitative study researched the correlation between four independent variables--credit deficiency, reading level, gender, and race--and the dependent variable, high school graduation. The study sample included archived records of 100 students enrolled in a California virtual high school. Chi-square tests determined the significance of the relationship between each independent variable and graduation. Subsequently, a logistic step-wise regression method provided analysis of the relationship between all of the independent variables and graduation. Results indicated that only credit deficiency significantly correlated with graduation. A discussion of these findings reflects critical implications and suggests key topics for future research.

Book excerpt: Abstract: As education systems continue to grow and evolve with new advancements in technology, so do methods of instruction. Technological advancements have helped to further distributed learning, making instruction available to students in various geographic locations and times. Virtual secondary education is a form of distributed learning where secondary students complete their degrees fully online, outside of a brick-and-mortar school. There is a lack of information regarding the experiences of these students as they transition to traditional colleges and universities after attending virtual high schools. This study sought to describe the experiences of virtual high school graduates as they transition to traditional colleges and universities. The study was qualitative in nature, and used phenomenological research methods to form an understanding of these experiences. The study was completed in the fall semester of 2012. A total of 12 virtual high school graduates from South Carolina virtual high schools were interviewed. Nine of the students were attending traditional, brick-and-mortar four year degree awarding higher education institutions, and three students were attending technical colleges. The findings revealed four themes, two related to the academic aspect of the transition, and two related to the social aspects. The academic themes were time management and learning environment preferences. Participants indicated that attending the virtual high schools helped them to learn time management skills, which transferred to their skills in college. Participants had a variety of learning environment preferences, and felt there were benefits to both online and face-to-face classes. The social themes were involvement and homeschooling misconceptions. Participants believed that involvement was key to success in virtual high schools, and staying involved in college helped their transitions. Participants also indicated that many peers and faculty had misconceptions that they were homeschooled. The overarching essence of the study revealed a need for more support and understanding of their educational backgrounds. Specifically, the participants perceived a lack of understanding about their backgrounds. Professors, administrators as well as other students could benefit from learning about virtual education. Additional studies following virtual high school graduates throughout their college experiences are needed. Further, forming support networks or programs for them would be beneficial for this student group.

Book excerpt: The admission process at higher education institutions has not adapted for online distance education classes taken in high schools, such as those offered by the Florida Virtual School. The purpose of this study was to determine whether online distance education courses taken in high school can serve as an indicator of student success in post-secondary education. An honors program at a large public research university provided the data examined. This honors program stored online distance education information in a database, which allowed for analysis. Presently, the institution's primary undergraduate admission office does not collect or store this type of information. I used SPSS Statistics to calculate logistical regression on this data. My goal was to discover what effect the high school online distance education variables had on the outcome of graduating in four or six years. Graduation rate is a key metric for colleges and universities as an indicator of success. For this reason, I wanted to determine through this study whether high school online distance education assisted in predicting which students will graduate. At least two stakeholders will find this information useful. Admission officers and, more specifically, honors admission officers will gain more insight into the student selection process as this study examines students in the top 10% of the incoming class. The other group, future researchers, will learn from this study and other new studies for even more understanding on this topic. Although the results indicated that high-achieving Florida Virtual School students do not graduate at higher rate than students who have not completed distance education classes, more research is required to understand how the other 90% of student applicants are affected by distance education courses completed in high school.
