Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by the need to achieve superior control performances for robots with hyper degrees of freedom, the virtual decomposition control approach is thoroughly presented in this book. This approach uses subsystem (such as links and joints of a complex robot) dynamics to conduct control design, while guaranteeing the stability and convergence of the entire complex robot without compromising the rigorousness of the system analysis. The central concept of this approach is the definition of the virtual stability. The stability of the entire complex robot is mathematically equivalent to the virtual stability of every subsystem. This fact allows us to convert a large problem to a few simple problems with mathematical certainty. This book comprises fourteen chapters. The first five chapters form the foundation of this approach. The remaining nine chapters are relatively independent. Starting from Chapter 6, each chapter deals with a particular type of systems including motor/transmission assemblies, hydraulic robots, coordinated multiple robots, space robots, humanoid robots, adaptive teleoperation, and modular robot manipulators. At the end, the extensions of this approach to distributed-parameter systems and to electrical circuits are given, paving the way for other applications to follow. This book is intended for practitioners, researchers, and graduate students who have acquired fundamental knowledge on robotics and control systems and have been committed to achieving the best control performances on complex robotics systems and beyond.

Book excerpt: While domain decomposition methods have a long history dating back well over one hundred years, it is only during the last decade that they have become a major tool in numerical analysis of partial differential equations. This monograph emphasizes domain decomposition methods in the context of so-called virtual optimal control problems and treats optimal control problems for partial differential equations and their decompositions using an all-at-once approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades, the development of specific methodologies for the control of systems described by nonlinear mathematical models has attracted an ever increasing interest. New breakthroughs have occurred which have aided the design of nonlinear control systems. However there are still limitations which must be understood, some of which were addressed at the IFAC Symposium in Capri. The emphasis was on the methodological developments, although a number of the papers were concerned with the presentation of applications of nonlinear design philosophies to actual control problems in chemical, electrical and mechanical engineering.

Book excerpt: A classic in underwater robotics. One of the first volumes in the “Springer Tracts in Advanced Robotics” series, it has been a bestseller through the previous three editions. Fifteen years after the publication of the first edition, the fourth edition comes to print. The book addresses the main control aspects in underwater manipulation tasks. With respect to the third edition, it has been revised, extended and some concepts better clustered. The mathematical model with significant impact on the control strategy is discussed. The problem of controlling a 6-degrees-of-freedoms autonomous underwater vehicle is investigated and a survey of fault detection/tolerant strategies for unmanned underwater vehicles is provided. Inverse kinematics, dynamic and interaction control for underwater vehicle-manipulator systems are then discussed. The code used to generate most of the numerical simulations is made available and briefly discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we collected recent results on the control of underactuated mechanical systems subject to internal uncertainties and external disturbances. The strategy developed is so universal that it is not restricted to a specific system but a large class of underactuated systems. Several benchmark systems are studied in this book, including detailed literature review, system dynamics derivation, control problem formulation, and simulation verification. The control strategy developed in chapter 4 is able to stabilize all these benchmark systems with satisfactory performance regardless of the underactuated dynamics and various uncertainties. The book is written as a text suitable for graduate students in the advanced course for the control of underactuated systems. It also provides valuable tools for researchers and practicing engineers working on the control of underactuated mechanical systems.

Book excerpt: An optimized framework for the inventory control of a high mix production system has been designed in order to guarantee the optimal mix of items in stock in presence of correlated demands. The Virtual Profit concept was developed to measure the criticality of an item in presence of correlated demands. The introduction of the Virtual Profit in the optimization problem allowed the problem to be decomposed and the optimal control parameters to be computed separately. Demands were modeled based on the stochastic properties of the historical demand so that simulations could be performed using statistically generated orders. The simulations provided a validation of the proposed technique showing that, with the same size of inventory, considering the Virtual Profits instead of the real profits improves the quality of the solution, especially when low levels of inventory are kept.

Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2020 in the subject Engineering - Robotics, University of Baghdad (University of Baghdad, Department of Aeronautical Engineering, Baghdad, Iraq), language: English, abstract: This paper is concerned with summarizing the categories of impedance control showing the feature and the limitations of each category. Much attention is paid to variable impedance control considering the possible control schemes, performance, the stability, the integration of constant/variable compliant elements with the host robots, etc. For a long time, the robotics community concentrated on improving the performance of the robotic systems in free space. The advanced control strategies for position control could not be sufficient to stabilize the motion of robots in constrained spaces. In general, there are two categories of force control schemes with miscellaneous subdivisions: hybrid position-force control and impedance control. The former is well suitable for well-known interaction environment, however, it does not consider the dynamic interaction between robot end-effector and the environment. In contrast, impedance control includes regulation and stabilization of robot motion via creating a mathematical relationship between the interaction forces and the reference trajectories. In general, a mass-spring-damper impedance filter is used for stabilization purposes. Tuning the parameters of the impedance filter is not trivial and may lead to unstable contact if an unsuitable strategy is used. The human, however, has amazing control systems with advanced biological actuators. He/she can manipulate the muscles stiffness to softly comply to the interaction forces. Accordingly, the parameters of the impedance filter should be time-varying rather than value-constant in order to meet the human behavior during interaction tasks.
