Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The dynamics of Black Theology were at the center of the ‘Long New Negro Renaissance,’ triggered by mass migrations to industrial hubs like Detroit. Finally, this crucial subject has found its match in the brilliant scholarship of Angela Dillard. No one has done a better job of tracing those religious roots through the civil rights–black power era than Professor Dillard.” —Komozi Woodard, Professor of History, Public Policy & Africana Studies at Sarah Lawrence College and author of A Nation within a Nation: Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones) and Black Power Politics “Angela Dillard recovers the long-submerged links between the black religious and political lefts in postwar Detroit. . . . Faith in the City is an essential contribution to the growing literature on the struggle for racial equality in the North.” —Thomas J. Sugrue, University of Pennsylvania, author of The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit Spanning more than three decades and organized around the biographies of Reverends Charles A. Hill and Albert B. Cleage Jr., Faith in the City is a major new exploration of how the worlds of politics and faith merged for many of Detroit’s African Americans—a convergence that provided the community with a powerful new voice and identity. While other religions have mixed politics and creed, Faith in the City shows how this fusion was and continues to be particularly vital to African American clergy and the Black freedom struggle. Activists in cities such as Detroit sustained a record of progressive politics over the course of three decades. Angela Dillard reveals this generational link and describes what the activism of the 1960s owed to that of the 1930s. The labor movement, for example, provided Detroit’s Black activists, both inside and outside the unions, with organizational power and experience virtually unmatched by any other African American urban community. Angela D. Dillard is Associate Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan. She specializes in American and African American intellectual history, religious studies, critical race theory, and the history of political ideologies and social movements in the United States.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication contains the report of the independent inquiry by Lord Hutton into the events leading up to the death of Dr. David Kelly, the government weapons expert, in July 2003, after he had been publicly named as the source of a report by Andrew Gilligan on BBC Radio Fours Today programme, which had alleged that the government had pressurised the Joint Intelligence Committee to exaggerate the military threat posed by Iraq in its September 2002 dossier. The question of whether intelligence about Iraqs weapons of mass destruction justified going to war falls outside the scope of the inquiry. The report concludes that Dr Kelly took his own life because he felt he had been publicly disgraced after being named as the source for the BBC report, but nobody was at fault in not contemplating the possibility of his suicide. Dr Kelly had broken official civil service procedures in having an unauthorised meeting with Andrew Gilligan, a fact that Dr Kelly later recognised. Due to uncertainties in Mr Gilligans evidence and note-taking, and in his misuse of language, it is not possible to reach a definite conclusion as to what Dr Kelly actually said. However, the report states its satisfaction that Dr Kelly did not say that the Government had insisted in the insertion of the 45 minute claim probably knowing it to be wrong. Therefore, the allegation is judged to have been unfounded. The BBC editorial system is found to have been defective in its failure to properly check the details of the allegations made by Andrew Gilligan before their broadcast, and the BBC Governors and management system was at fault by failing to fully investigate complaints made by Alastair Campbell. The government is cleared of any dishonourable or underhand conduct in the public naming of Dr. Kelly. Downing Street was entitled to suggest changes to the September dossier, and it was appropriate for John Scarlett, head of the Joint Intelligence Committee, to take account of these. There was no covert strategy by the Ministry of Defence to leak his name, although they were at fault for failing to give Dr Kelly sufficient notice that his name had been made public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers and researchers with a critical examination of mass shootings as told by the media, offering research-based, factual answers to oft-asked questions and investigating common myths about these tragic events. When a mass shooting happens, the news media is flooded with headlines and breaking information about the shooters, victims, and acts themselves. What is notably absent in the news reporting are any concrete details that serve to inform news consumers how prevalent these mass shootings really are (or are not, when considering crime statistics as a whole), what legitimate causes for concern are, and how likely an individual is to be involved in such an incident. Instead, these events often are used as catalysts for conversations about larger issues such as gun control and mental health care reform. What critical points are we missing when the media focuses on only what "people want to hear"? This book explores the media attention to mass shootings and helps readers understand the problem of mass shootings and public gun violence from its inception to its existence in contemporary society. It discusses how the issue is defined, its history, and its prevalence in both the United States and other countries, and provides an exploration of the responses to these events and strategies for the prevention of future violence. The book focuses on the myths purported about these unfortunate events, their victims, and their perpetrators through typical U.S. media coverage as well as evidence-based facts to contradict such narratives. The book's authors pay primary attention to contemporary shootings in the United States but also discuss early events dating back to the 1700s and those occurring internationally. The accessible writing enables readers of varying grade levels, including laypersons, to gain a more in-depth—and accurate—understanding of the context of mass shootings in the United States. As a result, readers will be better able to contribute to meaningful discussions related to mass shooting events and the resulting responses and policies.
