Book excerpt: A new account of Cézanne's complex relationship with his wife, who served as the subject of some of his most iconic portraits Paul Cézanne's (1839-1906) portraits of Hortense Fiquet (1850-1922), his wife and the subject of some of his iconic portraits, rank among the most powerful of their kind in French modernism. Yet, posterity has not been kind to Madame Cézanne. She was called a distraction, blamed for her husband's "lackluster" landscapes, and disdained for her impenetrable expression in the paintings. The reality is more complex, for while Fiquet may not have been the passion of Cézanne's lifetime, she was a willing accomplice, as model, mother of his only son, and unwavering partner against all odds. Madame Cézanne examines this unique relationship as it looks at Cézanne the painter, draftsman, and portraitist. Featuring 24 of Cézanne's oil portraits of Fiquet and most of the known drawings, Madame Cézanne both reevaluates, with insight and compassion, the long-held misconceptions about the Cézannes' unconventional marriage, and shows how Cézanne's portraits of his wife provide a lens through which to better understand his overall technique. Book excerpt: "On April 15, 1874, the exhibition organized by the "Societe Anonyme des Artistes Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs et Lithographes" opened its doors in Paris. Monet, Renoir, Degas, Morisot, Cezanne, Pissarro, and Sisley were among the participants. They painted real life as they perceived it--Parisian women dressed in the latest fashions, the capital city bustling with life, and colorful rural landscapes. This new style of painting was dubbed "impressionist." This publication takes a fresh look at a now-legendary exhibition, long seen as the starting point for avant-garde movements that followed. The volume positions it in the context of its time, considering France's defeat by the Prussians and the upheaval of the Commune in 1871, the reconstruction of Paris, and the domination of the official Salon over the art world. Written by French and American experts in the field, this richly illustrated book delves into the ways in which, 150 years ago, artists asserted their independence and changed the course of history." --

Book excerpt: Published to accompany a major exhibition of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot's paintings held in Paris and Ottawa during 1996, and forthcoming to New York. From nearly 3,000 paintings by this poetic 19th-century artist, the curators chose 163 works, which are reproduced here along with full art-historical discussions of each. Three major essays chronicle Corot's life and the development of his art; additional essays elucidate the subject of forgeries and describe the collecting of his works. Much original new scholarship is included along with a review of the scholarly literature, a concordance, and a chronology. 9.5x12.5"Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings were aesthetic, intellectual, and economic touchstones in the Parisian art world of the Revolutionary era, but their importance within this framework, while frequently acknowledged, never attracted much subsequent attention. Darius A. Spieth’s inquiry into Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art reveals the dominance of “Golden Age” pictures in the artistic discourse and sales transactions before, during, and after the French Revolution. A broadly based statistical investigation, undertaken as part of this study, shows that the upheaval reduced prices for Netherlandish paintings by about 55% compared to the Old Regime, and that it took until after the July Revolution of 1830 for art prices to return where they stood before 1789.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Theophile Gautier a envoye avec un feuilleton plus de trois mille personnes dans latelier de M. Ingres, wrote Champfleury in 1848. For artists, critics and readers alike, Gautier was the essential figure in French art journalism in the mid-nineteenth century. During the short-lived but pivotal period of the Second Republic, when the new administration was committed to reforming all the institutions of the fine arts, Gautier deployed the full resources of his brilliant, flexible and authoritative writing to support and direct these developments in ways compatible with his commitment to an idealist aesthetic, itself under growing pressure from alternative trends in an increasingly competitive art market. This first study of all Gautiers art journalism written during the Second Republic provides a long overdue reassessment of Gautiers importance in French nineteenth-century visual culture."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the final decades of the ancient regime, prominent collectors in Paris commissioned and collected French paintings of the period, works by Greuze, Fragonard, David and others that together comprised 'l'Ecole Francoise' - the French School. In this book, an art historian discusses six of these collectors and the collections they assembled, showing that private patronage in this period was revitalized by this patriotic desire to collect contemporary art. Colin B. Bailey explains why a taste for modern art emerged at this time and how it was encouraged and fostered. Examining the relationship between artist and patron, he discusses the degree of influence these enlightened patrons and collectors expected to exercise when new works were being commissioned. Bailey shows that collectors of eighteenth-century French painting seem not to have made rigid distinctions between the various genres or styles of the Academy's practitioners. Instead, history paintings and genre paintings - both rococo and neo-classical - were exhibited proudly on their walls as superb examples of the French School.
