Book excerpt: The volume offers to the reader a multi-faceted dialogue between noted experts from two major agricultural countries, both founding members of the Word Trade Organisation, each one with different stakes in the great globalisation game. After providing the recent historical background of agricultural policies in India and France, the contributors address burning issues related to market and regulation, food security and food safety, the expected benefits from the WTO and the genuine problems raised by the new forms of international trade in agriculture, including the sensitive question of intellectual property rights in bio-technologies. This informed volume underlines the necessity of moving beyond the North-South divide, in order to address the real challenges of the future.

Book Synopsis Deep Roots by : Edda L. Fields-Black
Download or read book Deep Roots written by Edda L. Fields-Black and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mangrove rice farming on West Africa's Rice Coast was the mirror image of tidewater rice plantations worked by enslaved Africans in 18th-century South Carolina and Georgia. This book reconstructs the development of rice-growing technology among the Baga and Nalu of coastal Guinea, beginning more than a millennium before the transatlantic slave trade. It reveals a picture of dynamic pre-colonial coastal societies, quite unlike the static, homogenous pre-modern Africa of previous scholarship. From its examination of inheritance, innovation, and borrowing, Deep Roots fashions a theory of cultural change that encompasses the diversity of communities, cultures, and forms of expression in Africa and the African diaspora.
Book Synopsis Routledge Revivals: Agriculture in France on the Eve of the Railway Age (1980) by : Hugh Clout
Download or read book Routledge Revivals: Agriculture in France on the Eve of the Railway Age (1980) written by Hugh Clout and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, this compact and useful book uses the earliest volumes of government-published statistics, and with the aid of computer-generated cartography, transforms the numbers there reported into an arrondissement-by-arrondissement comparative picture of French agriculture in the mid-1830s. Clout reviews problems of rapid population growth, scarcely adequate domestic food supplies and primitive systems of transportation, while attention is drawn to spatial variations in agricultural activity and productivity. Commercial, high-yielding farming was best developed in a northern multi-nuclear region, comprising of Ile-de-France, Normandy and Nord, with smaller foci of commercial orientation along an eastern axis from Alsace to Marseilles and in western areas from the Loire to the middle of the Garonne valley. Clout concludes that the revolutionary promise of national economic unity was far from being realised in the 1830s and was not to be achieved until national systems of transport and education were firmly established later in the nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis The Land of France 1815-1914 by : Hugh D. Clout
Download or read book The Land of France 1815-1914 written by Hugh D. Clout and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1983, attempts to examine the rural change in France between 1815 and 1914 with a sustained and explicit spatial approach. This volume represents a position in which space and time are meshed in an analysis of the forces underlying land-use and other changes that have contributed much to the making of the French landscape. In this book the shift from the rural economy towards the urban markets in this period is examined thoroughly, using the vast statistical record of cadastral surveys and agricultural enquiries as well as contemporary reports and agricultural journals. The detailed mapping of historical data is a major feature of the treatment. As a scholarly account of a major topic in historical geography, The Land of France 1815-1914 should appear to all students and researchers with interests in historical and rural geography and economic history and especially those specialising in European studies.

This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional Dynamics: Burgundian Landscapes in Historical Perspective challenges traditional practices and approaches to regional studies by anthropologists and economic geographers. This book attempts to incorporate various fields such as natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities for a more comprehensive framework in regional studies. A region that has historical record of depth, i.e., Burgundy, France, is chosen for this book. The book begins with a chapter on theories that critique the past approaches to regional studies and introduces relevant concepts covered in the book such as landscape, sociohistorical structures, heterarchy, etc. The following chapters focus on the physical structures of the region, the archaeological excavations, settlement and land use during the Iron Age and Gallo-Roman times, multiscalar research design, and Roman period beginning from its conquest until the Middle Ages. A summary of important themes is given in the last chapter. This book caters to many students and professionals in various fields like anthropology, geography, archeology, history, economics, and ecology.
