Book excerpt: In imperial China, workers drawn from the local populace performed many of the basic functions of local administration. Standing between the rulers and the ruled, these men mediated in both directions. McKnight's study concentrates on the nature of this village-level subbureaucratic activity in the Sung period; it sheds new light on the emergence of early Chinese society while providing a background against which to assess social changes during later dynasties.

Book excerpt: Among the large caches of private documents discovered and collected in China, few rival the Huizhou sources for the insight they provide into Chinese local society and economy over the past millennium. Having spent decades researching these exceptionally rich sources, Joseph P. McDermott presents in two volumes his findings about the major social and economic changes in this important prefecture of south China from around 900 to 1700. In this first volume, we learn about village settlement, competition among village religious institutions, premodern agricultural production, the management of land and lineage, the rise of the lineage as the dominant institution, and its members' application of commercial practices to local forestry operations. This landmark study of religious life and economic activity, of lineage and land, and of rural residents and urban commercial practices provides a compelling new framework for understanding a distinctive path of economic and social development for premodern China and beyond.

The present volume is a book about China by two Chinese. They are, moreover, Chinese who have had considerable opportunities of studying other forms of civilization than their own, having lived in England as students for some years. Mr. Tao obtained the b.sc. Degree in Economics at the University of London in 1913, and is now lecturing on Sociology in the University of Pekin. Mr. Leong took the same degree in 1914, and is still a student in the Sociological Department at the London School of Economics. Both have interested themselves especially in social philosophy and the comparative study of institutions, so that if they justly regard their own institutions with the feelings of patriotic Chinese, they are able equally to see them in relation to the customs of other peoples, and to review their merits and defects with a certain detachment. No doubt their point of View is not always that of the English reader. But, on the other hand, the point of view of Europeans who write on China is not that of Chinese, and for the full understanding of a great Empire, which. Book excerpt: The internal dynamics driving the relationship between the state and local society during the Southern Song and Yuan dynasties has both captivated and baffled scholars. In this book, Sukhee Lee posits an alternative understanding of the relationship between the state and social elites in the middle period of Chinese imperial history. Directly challenging the assumption of a zero-sum competition between the power of the state and that of local elites, Negotiated Power shows in vivid detail how state power and local elite interests were mutually constitutive and reinforcing. It was precisely the connectedness of social elites to the state, as well as the presence of the state in local life, that was essential to the rise of a self-conscious local elite society during this period. In probing the historical trajectory of Mingzhou prefecture (today’s Ningbo), Lee makes extensive use of local gazetteers from the Southern Song and the Yuan dynasties, and the abundant literary collections that still survive from this area, including some 280 epitaphs written for Mingzhou people of the time.
