Download or read book The Viking Age written by Charles Keary and published by Ozymandias Press. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is concerned with that period in the history of the Scandinavian peoples when they were growing, but had not yet fully grown, into nationalities, and when, therefore, their true national history had not begun. Every historic people has passed through this early formative period, its age of Sturm und Drang; and it may be said that every nationality which is worthy of the name has looked back upon that age with a peculiar affection and with a sort of reverence. It has, in consequence, overlaid the faint traditions of it with a garment of mythology, out of which it is in most cases possible only here and there to separate a shred of historical truth. The result is that the very phase in the development of the people about which we most long to know, is the one about which we are condemned to the completest ignorance. The Viking Age of the Northern Folk differs from the corresponding epochs in the history of other nations in this - that it is illuminated by a faint ray of real history lent from the pages of contemporary but alien chroniclers, the chroniclers, I mean, of Christian Europe. Were it not for this faint gleam, the earliest age of the Vikings would have remained for us as a mere tradition, something known to have been, but not presentable in any realizable form; much, in fact, what the Dorian Migration is in the history of Greece. As it is, by the aid of the contemporary records I have spoken of, we can present the northern migration in a clearer guise.

Book Synopsis Everyone's History by : John H. Chambers
Download or read book Everyone's History written by John H. Chambers and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-10-16 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book’s structure blends history and geography. A good world atlas or a world historical atlas will be helpful in the reading. The historical arrangement of contents has six Parts” Classical, Mediaeval, Early Modern (Lands), Early Modern (Ideas), Late Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, Twentieth Century. Although this sequence of periods and categories fits Western/European history best, it is also reasonably appropriate for Central Asia, India, and China. For other regions it is more arbitrary, and Classical and Mediaeval periods are merged. Because the Parts overlap and involve imprecise categories, in the List of Contents and Summaries no attempt is made to give dates for their beginning and end.

When her friend’s celebrity crush, in full Viking cosplay, sits down for lunch at the same restaurant, Aaliyah is determined to introduce her friend to the man. Instant attraction turns to anger, and instead of asking for an introduction, she sees red. Aaliyah challenges Vik, with his piercing blue eyes, on the meaning of his tattoos. Given a chance and a lot of charm and convincing, Vik hastily explains the true meaning of his marks. He invites Aaliyah and her friends to come see what he means. Vik had already chosen to embrace his Viking persona for game-play when magic forced the shift on him. Magical forces, using the power of online video gaming, are opening portals between worlds. That same magic causes Vik and his friends to shift into their berserker forms when called to do battle against invading hordes of orcs and goblins. It was supposed to be an afternoon of fun and mayhem, but Vik realizes too late, he may have put the feisty, beautiful Aaliyah in danger. Cosplay takes on a whole new meaning when Viking gamers have the power to shape shift. You don’t choose the berserker life. The berserker life chooses you.

Book Synopsis Ebbs and Flows of Ancient Imperial Power, 3000 BC - 900 AD by : Will Slatyer
Download or read book Ebbs and Flows of Ancient Imperial Power, 3000 BC - 900 AD written by Will Slatyer and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ebbs and Flows of Ancient Imperial Power, 3000 BC-AD 900 provides a flow of history throughout the ancient world, describing the ebbs and flows of empires and their power. Author Will Slatyer presents empires in China and India in the same timeframes as Mediterranean empires to show patterns of similarity. During ancient times, wars were a vital part of power-building, focusing on gaining territory and wealth for ancient priests and kings who evolved into imperial leaders with absolute power. Religion was an important factor in allowing the popular power of leaders-until contamination of foreign religions diluted their authority. The financial evolution had its origins in the weights of precious metals owned by temples, which were then converted into gold and silver coins that could be used for retail purchases and to pay individual taxes. When governments took full control of the minting of coins, they also commenced the debasement of the value of money that continues to the present day. Ebbs and Flows of Ancient Imperial Power, 3000 BC-AD 900 shows that fear and greed experienced by the priest, kings, pharaohs, and emperors of ancient times have not changed from the fear and greed of modern leaders. Much can be learned from an overview of historic empires.
