Download or read book Observation of the Continental Crust through Drilling II written by Hans-Jürgen Behr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to inform geoscientists about the progress made in scientific continental deep drilling as a new method for studying the continental crust. The Seeheim symposium was the second meeting organized for experts of the various national programs to present and discuss the results and progress made in their respective programs since the first symposium in Tarrytown in 1984. Various contributors dealt with the present state of - and experience in - deep drilling techniques as well as with the development of logging tools for drilling at high temperatures. Special emphasis was laid on the Continental Deep Drilling Program of the Federal Republic of Germany and its scientific aims.

Download or read book The China Continental Scientific Drilling Project written by Da Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively introduces the drilling theory and practice behind CCSD-1 well drilling, the first stage of a key national scientific engineering project of China. In addition to access to variety of data and information accumulated decade during the project’s decade-long operation, readers also gain insight into state-of-the-art techniques and most recent achievements in China’s scientific drilling industry. Specifically, this work introduces the drilling engineering design, well site construction, and equipment and construction situation. It also provides a minute description on the new techniques that were developed for tackling the technical difficulties, expounds in detail the core drilling techniques for hard rock deep well, and treats diamond core drill bits, reaming drilling techniques in hard crystalline rocks, well-deviation control techniques for strong dipping strata, and much more. In summary, this book offers a valuable resource for engineers and technicians who engage in scientific drilling and a variety of resource drilling engineering; teachers and students who are interested in this field will also gain plentiful information. Prof. Da Wang, the former deputy director of China Geological Survey, was the director of the Engineering Centre, chief engineer and drill-site general director of China Continental Scientific Drilling Project.

Book Synopsis Microbiology of the Terrestrial Deep Subsurface by : Penny S. Amy
Download or read book Microbiology of the Terrestrial Deep Subsurface written by Penny S. Amy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obtaining and analyzing samples is challenging in subsurface science. This first-of-its-kind reference book addresses accomplishments in this field-from drilling to sample work-up. A collaborative approach is taken, involving the efforts of microbiologists, geochemists, hydrologists, and drilling and mining experts to present a comprehensive view of subsurface research. The text provides practical information about obtaining, analyzing, and evaluating subsurface materials; the current status of subsurface microbial ecology; and describes several applications that will interest a variety of readers, including engineers, physical, and life scientists.
Book Synopsis The Cretaceous-Tertiary Event and Other Catastrophes in Earth History by : Graham Ryder
Download or read book The Cretaceous-Tertiary Event and Other Catastrophes in Earth History written by Graham Ryder and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume atempts to explore and clarify the relationship among the geological records, the extinctions, and the causes of catastrophes for life in Earth's history. Most of the papers address the geological record and the extinctions across the Cretaceou-Teriary boundary, and the buried Chicxulub structure that is now consensually deemed to be of impact origin and to be intimately related to that boundary." Book Synopsis The Puchezh-Katunki Impact Crater by : Victor L. Masaitis
Download or read book The Puchezh-Katunki Impact Crater written by Victor L. Masaitis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-23 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents essential data on the geology of the Puchezh-Katunki crater – an early Jurassic crater located on the East European Platform, with an impact structure that is ca. 80 km in diameter. Offering a comprehensive guide, it reviews the studies carried out during the last several decades on this prominent but not well-known impact structure. It offers the international community state-of-the-art information on the crater with regard to e.g. structural mapping, drilling (including the Vorotilovo well, which is 5374 m deep), geophysical research, and the petrological analysis of impactites and various breccias. In addition, the book includes new results from the mineralization and crystallizations beneath this large impact crater, and suggests new models for crater formations.
Book Synopsis From Greenhouse to Icehouse by : Donald R. Prothero
Download or read book From Greenhouse to Icehouse written by Donald R. Prothero and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marine Eocene-Oligocene transition of 34 million years ago was a critical turning point in Earth's climatic history, when the warm, high-diversity "greenhouse" world of the early Eocene ceded to the glacial, "icehouse" conditions of the early Oligocene. This book surveys the advances in stratigraphic and paleontological research and isotopic analysis made since 1989 in regard to marine deposits around the world. In particular, it summarizes the high-resolution details of the so-called doubthouse interval (roughly 45 to 34 million years ago), which is critical to testing climatic and evolutionary hypotheses about the Eocene deterioration. The authors' goals are to discuss the latest information concerning climatic and oceanographic change associated with this transition and to examine geographic and taxonomic patterns in biotic turnover that provide clues about where, when, and how fast these environmental changes happened. They address a range of topics, including the tectonic and paleogeographic setting of the Paleogene; specific issues related to the stratigraphy of shelf deposits; advances in recognizing and correlating boundary sections; trends in the expression of climate change; and patterns of faunal and floral turnover. In the process, they produce a valuable synthesis of patterns of change by latitude and environment.
