Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a homeland and when does it become a national territory? Why have so many people been willing to die for such places throughout the twentieth century? What is the essence of the Promised Land? Following the acclaimed and controversial The Invention of the Jewish People, Shlomo Sand examines the mysterious sacred land that has become the site of the longest-running national struggle of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The Invention of the Land of Israel deconstructs the age-old legends surrounding the Holy Land and the prejudices that continue to suffocate it. Sand’s account dissects the concept of “historical right” and tracks the creation of the modern concept of the “Land of Israel” by nineteenth-century Evangelical Protestants and Jewish Zionists. This invention, he argues, not only facilitated the colonization of the Middle East and the establishment of the State of Israel; it is also threatening the existence of the Jewish state today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Land has been an enduring magnet for visitors seeking to retrace the footsteps of biblical prophets, kings and saints and to glimpse the setting of events recorded in the Scriptures. This book offers a selection of over 350 early photographs, paintings, and drawings of the length and breadth of the Holy Land from the rich repository of images in the archives of the Palestine Exploration Fund. As these images were produced before modern development impacted on these landscapes they are an invaluable resource. The pictures are accompanied by 7 maps and plans showing the locations depicted and a commentary describing the biblical context, informed by up-to-date scholarship. The book is divided into five chapters; an introduction which includes a brief account of pilgrimage to the Holy Land through the ages, followed by a series of geographical 'tours' through Galilee, Samaria, and Judea and Philistia, before culminating with a focus on the two main sites of interest for the traveller: Bethlehem and Jerusalem. While often very beautiful in their own right, the pictures also reflect the interest and sensibilities of the photographers and those who collected them, and capture the opposing undercurrents of scientific enquiry and piety characteristic of 19th Century European society. In the case of the photographers engaged by the PEF, a striving for objectivity is strikingly evident in their work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a garage sale in Minnesota in 1989, a young American photographer, John Barnier, bought eight wooden crates containing over 130 glass plate negatives. Realizing that many of the negatives were of Jerusalem, he brought them to the Harvard Semitic Museum where they were eventually identified as the long-lost work of Mendel John Diness, who lived in Jerusalem in the 1850s and was the first photographer to learn--and practice--the art there. Until a decade ago Diness did not even appear in the annals of photography. It was Dror Wahrman, an Israeli historian, who discovered that Diness was a Russian Jewish watchmaker who arrived in Jerusalem in 1848 to pursue rabbinical studies. A year later he converted and his baptism by the Anglican bishop caused near-riots in the city's Jewish community. Having lost his Jewish clients, Diness supported his family by learning photography and eventually became the Holy City's first commercial photographer. This volume traces Diness' role in the history of photography and his life in Jerusalem and subsequently in the United States. From the uncovered negatives, 60 platinum prints were developed showing with utmost clarity rare views of Jerusalem and environs. Other photographs, lent by Diness' descendants, enhance this most unusual tale.

That first issue was sent out to just 165 subscribers. Today, it's an astonishing 11 million people in over than 170 countries This series celebrates Gilbert Grosvenor's first twenty-five years as editor and his maxim The mind must see before it can believe. From the earliest days, he filled the magazine with photographs that were a source of awe and wonder to his readers and, for virtually all of them, the first time they had ever seen such images. Taking original reporting and photos as they appeared in numerous issues - and building them into a chronological single volume - the books presented here cover: discoveries of the lost worlds of the Aztecs, Mayas, and Incas; the building and opening of the Panama Canal; the search for the origins of Judaism and Christianity; the mysteries of the Sahara; the rush for the North Pole and the race for the South Pole; the Russian people before the revolution A Western-eye view of China in the early part of the 20th century

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Land has captures the attention of mankind since the very beginning of human civilization, and even more so from the early days of Christianity. Nineteenth-century Palestine fired the imagination of the Western world. Improved travel facilities and greater political stability in the Near Easst brought ever-increasing numbers of visitors to the Holy Land, affecting the quantity and quality of the pictorial depictions of its sites and scenes. Like other countries in the exotic Muslim East, Palestine also became a point of focal interest for painters of the Orientalist school. The author has assembled a fascinating collection of unique works of art, executed in the diverse styles of nineteenth-century painting. Around these reproductions, many of them in colour, he reconstructs the story of the artists who produced them, who came from many European countries and from North America. The result is an important and unique perspective on the sites, persons, events and customs of the Holy Land in that century.
