Sincere, single-minded, gentle of nature, pure and honorable in life." C. G. W. Descended from the same Puritan stock that he admired and from William Pynchon himself, whose character he has so carefully portrayed in the following pages, Charles Henry Barrows was born in Springfield in Massachusetts on August 4, 1853. His father, Charles Barrows, was for many years the beloved Head Master of the school now bearing his name, while his mother, Lydia Smith, was of West Springfield heritage, having been born in the old farmhouse in Tatham in which the Hessian soldiers were billeted during the Revolutionary War. Mr. Barrows was educated in the Springfield Public Schools and at Harvard College and Law School from which he was graduated "with honor" and whose Phi Beta Kappa Key he always wore with pride and loyalty. His literary ability won him distinction at Harvard and he was one of the early editors of the "Advocate." Having been admitted to the Massachusetts Bar, he spent two years in Boston as Assistant Attorney General of the Commonwealth. Returning to Springfield with great joy after his public service, Mr. Barrows made it his home for the rest of his life. It was the scene of the practise of his profession in which he won great confidence and respect. While devoted to the Law he had many other interests. His love of the best in literature won for him the friendship of many noted men of letters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Springfield, Mass: Her Picturesque Beauty and Commercial Enterprise Springfield, with its eventful history of 253 years, its exceptionally picturesque and central location upon the banks of the Connecticut river in Western Massachusetts, and the assured prospect of still greater growth and commercial importance, has much to invite the attention of the tourist. There have been few towns in the commonwealth of Massachusetts which have borne their part in moulding its fortunes with greater integrity, and still fewer have retained so much of the staid quality of the New England town, combined with that modern enterprise which places America at the head of the commercial world. The men destined to become the founders of Springfield were drawn to the Connecticut valley by glowing tales of its fertility only five years after the founding of Boston. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Housing Conditions in Springfield, Massachusetts: Prepared for the Housing Committee of the Union Relief Association The point of View of the committee was constructive and with an outlook into the future rather than critical and of the present. When the investigation was started, neither the committee nor the agent engaged to undertake the work expected to find any serious housing evils such as were discovered later, and it was a source of considerable disappointment to find that much had been left undone in preventing the development and existence of housing conditions which are a menace to the community. In engaging the Bureau of Social Research of New England it was felt that an outside agency would be better prepared to gather the material and to consider it from the broad point of view of the student of social conditions, without local prejudice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folklore of Springfield At the urgent request of the friends most interested in these pages, we will state briefly why we built the book. AS a child nothing was more alluring to me than the tales my elders had to tell Of when I was young and the country new. My interest in all these brought invitations to see the Old furniture, dishes and handiwork Of the kinds that had been handed down through the generations. Sometimes it took me to an Old attic, and haircloth trunks with brass nails, and the initials Of the owners set with these nails through the center Of the cover, and it seemed to me the possession Of such a treas ure would be the height Of untold wealth. Again I went to the Old corner cupboards, and soon learned that the top shelf Of these cupboards was a sacred Spot where the choicest treasures were kept. Sometimes I was invited to look only on the lower shelves, as those were for such as poor me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
