Download or read book Vietnam Posters written by David Heather and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Heather (North Korean Posters), a collector of North Korean and Vietnamese art, and Buchanan (Vietnam Zippos: American Soldiers' Engravings and Stories) here present full- and half-page reproductions of Communist propaganda posters printed in Vietnam from the 1960s to the present. Buchanan's discussions in the introductory essay on the printing methods and native materials used in wartime posters are especially captivating. The posters, captioned in English and German, are arranged into four subject groups: war; Ho Chi Minh and the Communist Party; agriculture; and education, population control, and voting. Because the material is organized by topic, it would have been helpful for the captions to include approximate dates. VERDICT An original and nicely produced book; recommended for students and lay readers with an interest in Vietnam or propaganda art. Eric Linderman, Euclid P.L., OH"--Library Journal Reviews.

Book Synopsis Vietnam: a Collection of War Stories from Nashua Veterans by : Ronald Dube
Download or read book Vietnam: a Collection of War Stories from Nashua Veterans written by Ronald Dube and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the last installment in a trilogy about my hometowns involvement in our countrys mid-twentieth-century wars. I researched the pages of the Nashua Telegraph from 1060 through 1973, looking for names, leads, and stories about local men and women who participated in Americas most contentious war. The paper published news and features from Derry/Salem, east of Nashua, west to Jaffrey/Rindge, and north to New Boston. The Nashua Telegraph also covered Tyngsboro, Pepperell, and Dunstable, Massachusetts. Sadly, times for newspapers have changed, and the Telegraph has a much-reduced coverage area.
Download or read book Other Moons written by and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this anthology, Vietnamese writers describe their experience of what they call the American War and its lasting legacy through the lens of their own vital artistic visions. A North Vietnamese soldier forms a bond with an abandoned puppy. Cousins find their lives upended by the revelation that their fathers fought on opposite sides of the war. Two lonely veterans in Hanoi meet years after the war has ended through a newspaper dating service. A psychic assists the search for the body of a long-vanished soldier. The father of a girl suffering from dioxin poisoning struggles with corrupt local officials. The twenty short stories collected in Other Moons range from the intensely personal to narratives that deal with larger questions of remembrance, trauma, and healing. By a diverse set of authors, including many veterans, they span styles from social realism to tales of the fantastic. Yet whether describing the effects of Agent Orange exposure or telling ghost stories, all speak to the unresolved legacy of a conflict that still haunts Vietnam. Among the most widely anthologized and popular pieces of short fiction about the war in Vietnam, these works appear here for the first time in English. Other Moons offers Anglophone audiences an unparalleled opportunity to experience how the Vietnamese think and write about the conflict that consumed their country from 1954 to 1975—a perspective still largely missing from American narratives.

Book Synopsis The Republic of Vietnam, 1955–1975 by : Tuong Vu
Download or read book The Republic of Vietnam, 1955–1975 written by Tuong Vu and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the voices of senior officials, teachers, soldiers, journalists, and artists, The Republic of Vietnam, 1955–1975, presents us with an interpretation of "South Vietnam" as a passionately imagined nation in the minds of ordinary Vietnamese, rather than merely as an expeditious political construct of the United States government. The moving and honest memoirs collected, translated, and edited here by Tuong Vu and Sean Fear describe the experiences of war, politics, and everyday life for people from many walks of life during the fraught years of Vietnam's Second Republic, leading up to and encompassing what Americans generally call the "Vietnam War." The voices gift the reader a sense of the authors' experiences in the Republic and their ideas about the nation during that time. The light and careful editing hand of Vu and Fear reveals that far from a Cold War proxy struggle, the conflict in Vietnam featured a true ideological divide between the communist North and the non-communist South.

Book Synopsis Family of Fallen Leaves by : Charles Waugh
Download or read book Family of Fallen Leaves written by Charles Waugh and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of twelve short stories and one essay by Vietnamese writers reveals the tragic legacy of Agent Orange and raises troubling moral questions about the physical, spiritual, and environmental consequences of war. Between 1962 and 1971, the U.S. military sprayed approximately twenty million gallons of Agent Orange and other chemical defoliants on Vietnam and Laos, exposing combatants and civilians from both sides to the deadly contaminant dioxin. Many of the exposed, and later their children, suffered from ailments including diabetes, cancer, and birth defects. This remarkably diverse collection represents a body of work published after the early 1980s that stirred sympathy and indignation in Vietnam, pressuring the Vietnamese government for support. "Thirteen Harbors" intertwines a woman's love for a dioxin victim with ancient Cham legend and Vietnamese folk wisdom. "A Child, a Man" explores how our fates are bound with those of our neighbors. In "The Goat Horn Bell" and "Grace," families are devastated to find the damage from Agent Orange passed to their newborn children. Eleven of the pieces appear in English for the first time, including an essay by Minh Chuyen, whose journalism helped publicize the Agent Orange victims' plight. The stories in Family of Fallen Leaves are harrowing yet transformative in their ability to make us identify with the other.

Book Synopsis Museums, Collections and Social Repair in Vietnam by : Graeme Were
Download or read book Museums, Collections and Social Repair in Vietnam written by Graeme Were and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museums, Collections and Social Repair in Vietnam analyses the relationship between museums, collections and social repair in contemporary Vietnam. Drawing on fieldwork in a range of museums in the country, alongside interviews with museum workers and stakeholders, and analyses of museum exhibitions, the book explores how museums help ordinary people overcome loss suffered during conflict. Focusing on key objects in museum collections that elicit strong emotions or feelings, Graeme Were examines their relationship to social repair and transformation, in order to understand what mobilises survivors, families and communities to recover and re-evaluate memory and give prominence to grievances and loss or future hopes and aspirations. Arguing that nationalist frameworks no longer adequately account for the diverse agendas of Vietnamese museums, this book brings into question the dynamics between history and memory; the capacity of the museum to repair injury, loss or suffering; and the limits of historical memory beyond the control of a one-party state. Museums, Collections and Social Repair in Vietnam analyses the role of museums in transforming lives and creating a just future. It will be of interest to academics and students engaged in the study of museums, heritage, Asia, tourism and anthropology.
