Book Synopsis A Critical Edition of Caroline Norton's Love in "The World" by : Ross Nelson
Download or read book A Critical Edition of Caroline Norton's Love in "The World" written by Ross Nelson and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caroline Norton’s forgotten novel, which has remained unpublished until now, tells of the perils of courtship facing a naïve young girl Alixe, who has been launched onto the London social season. Her encounters with both a worthy and an undesirable suitor open an intriguing window onto the fashionable society of the 1820s in which Love in "the World" takes place. In placing her heroine in these predicaments Norton was able to draw upon her own experiences of the bon ton, as the time in which the novel is set coincides with her first ball in March 1826, when she burst upon the scene with all her beauty and brilliance, later recalling, “I came out [...] to find all London at my feet.” She believed that London could be as callous as the metropolitan social scene might prove treacherous, and in alerting the reader to the dangers of fashionable society she makes ample use of her own observations as a debutante at her first London season. In a highly readable and coherent narrative with an indeterminate ending, which throws a spotlight onto her life and times, the plot of Love in 'the World' initially follows a pattern broadly representative of her own experience before developing in unexpected and surprising ways.

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Victorian Scandals in Literature and Culture written by Brenda Ayres and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Victorian Scandals in Literature and Culture exposes, explores, and examines what Victorians once considered flagrant breaches of decorum. Infringements that were fantasized through artforms or were actually committed exceeded entertaining parlor gossip; once in print they were condemned as socially contaminative but were also consumed as delightfully sensational. Written by scholars in diverse disciplines, this volume: Demonstrates that spreading scandals seemed to have been one of the most entertaining sources of activities but were also normative efforts made by the Victorians to ensure conformity of decorum. Provides a broad spectrum of infractions that were considered scandalous to the Victorians. Identifies Victorian transgressions that made the news and that may still shock modern readers. Covers a gamut of moral infractions and transgressions either practiced, rumored, or fantasized in art forms. This handbook is an invaluable resource about Victorian literature, art, and culture which challenges its readers to ponder perplexing questions about how and why some scandals were perpetrated and propagated in the nineteenth century while others were not, and what the controversies reveal about the human condition that persists beyond Victoria’s reign of propriety.

Book Synopsis Religious Experience and the New Woman by : Joanna Dean
Download or read book Religious Experience and the New Woman written by Joanna Dean and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-10 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Religious Experience and the New Woman, Joanna Dean traces the development of liberal spirituality in the early 20th century through the life and work of Lily Dougall (1858--1923), a New Woman novelist who became known as a religious essayist and Anglican modernist. Dean examines the connections between Dougall's marginal position as a woman intellectual and her experiential, combatively iconoclastic theology, and demonstrates that through her writing and mentoring, Dougall contributed to the shaping of modern spirituality. Lily Dougall described religious experience -- the sense of the presence of God -- as the "rock" of her theology. Dean observes the protean nature of this rock as Dougall moved from a submissive holiness faith, to a mystical Mauricean sense of the Kingdom of God, to the relational theology of personal idealism, and reveals how psychology, which appeared to provide scientific support for her religious beliefs, eventually threatened to undermine her experiential faith.
Book Synopsis ISS 19 The Phenomenology of Community Activism by : Nora Amath
Download or read book ISS 19 The Phenomenology of Community Activism written by Nora Amath and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phenomenology of Community Activism explores how MCSOs have responded to the challenges of the Australian socio-political context, the perceived impact of these experiences, and how Islam is manifested within the contexts of these experiences. In contrast to much publicised jihadist and radical groups, MCSOs are far more representative of Muslim communities and integral to the long-term position of Islam in Australia. This book offers researchers, policy makers and those engaged in community development a rich understanding of Muslim community building, engagement and agency. "This book reveals what will be surprising to some that there are many and varied MCSOs in Australia, that in many ways they are similar to other civil society organisations, serve similar purposes and encounter similar issues. This is a very important datum to stand against the prejudices about Muslims and their organisations."—Professor Emeritus Gary Bouma, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Monash University, UNESCO Chair in Intercultural and Interreligious Relations-Asia Pacific.
Book Synopsis Victoria Woodhull's Sexual Revolution by : Amanda Frisken
Download or read book Victoria Woodhull's Sexual Revolution written by Amanda Frisken and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president, forced her fellow Americans to come to terms with the full meaning of equality after the Civil War. A sometime collaborator with Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, yet never fully accepted into mainstream suffragist circles, Woodhull was a flamboyant social reformer who promoted freedom, especially freedom from societal constraints over intimate relationships. This much we know from the several popular biographies of the nineteenth-century activist. But what we do not know, as Amanda Frisken reveals, is how Woodhull manipulated the emerging popular media and fluid political culture of the Reconstruction period in order to accomplish her political goals. As an editor and public speaker, Woodhull demanded that women and men be held to the same standards in public life. Her political theatrics brought the topic of women's sexuality into the public arena, shocking critics, galvanizing supporters, and finally locking opposing camps into bitter conflict over sexuality and women's rights in marriage. A woman who surrendered her own privacy, whose life was grist for the mills of a sensation-mongering press, she made the exposure of others' secrets a powerful tool of social change. Woodhull's political ambitions became inseparable from her sexual nonconformity, yet her skill in using contemporary media kept her revolutionary ideas continually before her peers. In this way Woodhull contributed to long-term shifts in attitudes about sexuality and the slow liberation of marriage and other social institutions. Using contemporary sources such as images from the "sporting news," Frisken takes a fresh look at the heyday of this controversial women's rights activist, discovering Woodhull's previously unrecognized importance in the turbulent climate of Radical Reconstruction and making her a useful lens through which to view the shifting sexual mores of the nineteenth century.
