Book excerpt: Russian security forces have arrested more than 1,000 demonstrators in mid-2019; in ongoing rallies against restrictions affecting local elections. About 60,000 people gathered on Sakharov Avenue in the dead heat of August, human rights activists protesting despite the absence of prominent opposition leaders, nearly of all whom have been jailed after previous protests. The turnout was dampened neither by police brutality shown in July/August 2019 - when thousands were arrested - nor by the Moscow authorities' efforts to keep people away through official "storm warnings" and hastily organized music festivals. Hence this book addresses political instability and civil unrest in Russia; and how important conflict resolution, mediation, international cooperation - and emotional intelligence! - are in today's Russia. Social challenges - such as abuse of power and social inequality are also explored in this evidence-based study - so that democracy and human dignity can finally be manifested for all in Mother Russia!

Book Synopsis Conflict Resolution and Status by : Céline Francis
Download or read book Conflict Resolution and Status written by Céline Francis and published by ASP / VUBPRESS / UPA. This book was released on 2011 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dispute between Georgia and Abkhazia is not a conflict of equals. In international conflicts, adversaries may differ de facto on the ground, in terms of population, territory and capability, among other things. As internationally recognized states, however, they have equal de jure status, and fears that inviting the other side to the negotiating tablemight be construed as recognition, for example, rarely intrude. The question of status does pose problems, however, when a conflict is being fought between a recognized state and an unrecognized entity, and these problems may contribute to increase the intractability of such conflicts. This study explores how and to what extent the difference in status between a sovereign state and an unrecognized entity hinders conflict resolution activities. Based on intensive fieldwork and unedited negotiation material, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the negotiations, informal dialogues and grassroots activities that took place in Abkhazia and Georgia between 1989 and 2008.
Book Synopsis Georg Lukacs: The Fundamental Dissonance of Existence by : Timothy Bewes
Download or read book Georg Lukacs: The Fundamental Dissonance of Existence written by Timothy Bewes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Soviet period, the vast expansion in the power and influence of capital, and recent developments in social and aesthetic theory, have made the work of Hungarian Marxist philosopher and social critic Georg Lukács more vital than ever. The very innovations in literary method that, during the 80s and 90s, marginalized him in the West have now made possible new readings of Lukács, less in thrall to the positions taken by Lukács himself on political and aesthetic matters. What these developments amount to, this book argues, is an opportunity to liberate Lukács's thought from its formal and historical limitations, a possibility that was always inherent in Lukács's own thinking about the paradoxes of form. This collection brings together recent work on Lukács from the fields of Philosophy, Social and Political Thought, Literary and Cultural Studies. Against the odds, Lukács's thought has survived: as a critique of late capitalism, as a guide to the contradictions of modernity, and as a model for a temperament that refuses all accommodation with the way things are.
