This book was released on 1990 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 5 May 1986, 3 packages of TNT were detonated 100 ft in the air above the Turner Drop Zone at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts. The aerial explosions were recorded by seismic and acoustic sensors over 2 linear arrays that covered the distance range from 0 to 1000 meters. One array was installed over flat topography, while the other was installed across a hill with 80 ft of relief. The goal of the experiment was to examine the response of the ground and the air to a unit impulse. Although recording of the higher frequencies generated by the blasts was limited by the sampling rate capability of the equipment (100 and 200 samples/sec) it was clear that the hill produced a sheltering effect. Considerable transverse motion appeared in the records. Reduced time plots revealed a propagation speed of 0.35 km/sec corresponding primarily to an airwave induced seismic signal, although some seismic precursors are evident. The ratio of peak seismic velocity to pressure ranged from 10-4 cm/sec/Pa for the line that transversed the hill to .00001 cm/sec/Pa for the flat array. The experiment should be repeated in the same area during different seasonal coverings (snow and ice) and extended to areas with more complex topography and different vegetation. In future experiments the position of the air blasts should be varied to facilitate discrimination of paths to the receivers. The results could be extrapolated to an extended, continuous source such as a low flying aircraft or cruise missile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development is described of fabrication techniques for construction of a silicon Hall effect element with characteristics suitable for application in an analog multiplier. The relative merits of various semiconductor materials are considered, and the reasons for the selection of silicon are outlined. The considerations necessary for the design of the element package structure are developed, and the tests required to characterize the Hall element in terms of electronic design parameters are also developed. Approximately 24 successful silicon elements were processed, and three pairs were mounted in suitable magnetic structures so as to obtain complete element packages. Experimental transistorized circuitry was constructed for use with these element packages in order to exhibit the ability of the silicon Hall device to multiply. (Author).

This book was released on 2007 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive research in government archives and private papers, this book analyzes the secret debate within the Eisenhower administration over the pursuit of a nuclear test-ban agreement. In contrast to much recent scholarship, this study concludes that Eisenhower strongly desired to reach an accord with the Soviet Union and the United Kingdom to cease nuclear weapons testing. For Eisenhower, a test ban would ease Cold War tensions, slow the nuclear arms race, and build confidence toward disarmament; however, he faced continual resistance from his early scientific advisers, most notably Lewis L. Strauss and Edward Teller. Extensive research into previously unavailable government archival sources and collections of private manuscripts reveals the manipulative acts of test-ban opponents and other factors that inhibited Eisenhower s actions throughout his presidency. Meticulously analyzed, these sources underscore Eisenhower's dependence on the counsel of his science advisors, such as Strauss, James R. Killian, and George B. Kistiakowsky, to determine the course he pursued in regard to several components of his national security strategy. In addition to its comprehensive analysis of the test-ban debate, this book makes important contributions to the scholarly literature assessing Eisenhower's leadership and his approach to arms control. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainty about Soviet intentions and capabilities after the launch of Sputnik required changes in U.S. strategic nuclear policy; Peter J. Roman draws from recently declassified archives to examine of one of the most unstable periods in the Cold War. Roman argues that presidential leadership from 1957 to 1960 was crucial to national security. Dwight D. Eisenhower was, he argues, actively involved in all nuclear policy making. His responses to the extreme uncertainty of the late 1950s shaped American nuclear policy for decades, and in its internal deliberations his administration anticipated much of the subsequent public debate. Eisenhower and the Missile Gap investigates a variety of issues, actors, and institutions to explain how a government deals with high levels of technological uncertainty. Several significant themes emerge: the evolution of American perceptions of vulnerability; problems in intelligence collection and analysis; the integration of new weapons systems into strategy; the influence of the armed forces; the impact of organizational interests on policy and force decisions; Eisenhower's internal and external leadership style; and presidential management of defense and foreign policy.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Luigi Napolitano Award (2006) from the International Academy of Astronautics This book presents the fascinating story of the events that paved the way to space. It introduces the reader to the history of early rocketry and the subsequent developments that led into the space age. People of various nations and from various lands contributed to the breakthrough to space, and the book takes the reader to faraway places on five continents. It also includes many quotes to give readers a flavor of how the participants viewed the developments. Most publications on the topic either target narrow aspects of rocket history or are popular books that scratch the surface, with minimal and sometimes inaccurate technical details. This book bridges the gap. It contains numerous technical details usually unavailable in popular publications. The details are not overbearing and anyone interested in rocketry and space exploration will navigate through the book without difficulty. There are 340 figures and photographs, many appearing for the first time.
