Hence, the mange para sites of horses may affect man, but their vitality is thereby greatly impaired, and they are unable to exist any length of time away from their natural host. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Animal Parasitology Special attention has been paid to presenting the life cycles of parasites in detail, relating these, where possible, to the properties of the environment. When a life cycle is presented in diagrammatic form, in this way, the result is frequently complex, but it has been found that the preparation of such diagrams helps to focus attention on some overlooked aspects of the life cycle. Prominence has also been given to two new and rapidly developing fields of parasitology, namely, immunity to animal parasites and the development oftec for the cultivation of parasites in vitro. Within the past few years remarkable advances have been made in both these fields, and these open up exciting possibilities for the future. Biological research is now being carried out on such a scale throughout the world that a text in most specialised fields is out of date almost as soon This is certainly true in parasitology and the constant flow of reprints reaching the author each week serves to emphasise this fact. Many of the ideas set down here will require reconsideration in the light of further work, and this thought should be constantly before the student, as he turns over the pages of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eleven Miscellaneous Papers on Animal Parasites Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith, and to recommend for publication as Bulletin No. 35 of this Bureau, the manuscripts of eleven miscellaneous articles on animal parasites. Three of the parasites mentioned are Asiatic and are likely to be found affecting some of the troops who have served in China or the Philippines. These three parasites are not familiar to American physicians in general, since they are not usually described in American text-books. One of the other parasites is the common vinegar eel, which is now reported as a parasite of man, and two parasites are discussed which are more or less problematic, but have been mentioned in many zoological and medical writings. While the work of this Bureau is primarily in the field of veterinary medicine, it is impossible entirely to avoid references to diseases which affect man. This is particularly the case with the animal parasites. Not only is it impossible to draw a sharp line between the parasites of man and those of the domesticated and wild animals, since the organisms in question are in many cases transmissible from one to the other, but as this is the only service in the Government which supports a laboratory devoted to a study of medical and veterinary zoology, we are constantly being called upon by the physicians of the country, the State boards of health, and the various departments of the Government for information or cooperation in this field of science. The student has had presented the general outline of the life history Of the pork tapeworm of man, of the liver fluke of the sheep, and of trichina. As a rule he has seen only demonstration Specimens, covering but a portion of the life cycles of these forms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of Animal Parasitology The direct structural adaptations of parasites to their hosts are exceedingly various. Fungus parasites among plants commonly exhibit absorptive or haustorial filaments by which they set up a more intimate association with the cellular materials of the host, while animal parasites frequently exhibit special organs of attach ment and a protecting cuticle for the surface of the body. Such adaptations, however, are of minor significance in comparison with others which ensure the production of a large number of young and the transfer of the parasite in one stage or another to its proper host. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Minute Animal Parasites, or Unseen Foes in the Animal World The selection of subject-matter, naturally, has presented some difficulty, but so far as possible that side of the science of Protozoology, that comes in direct contact with human life and needs, has been chosen in preference to that which deals with the more theoretical and speculative side. Diseases of man, cattle, horses, poultry, game, fish, and bees, due to parasitic Protozoa, thus occupy a large pro portion of the book.
